I was talking to a Smith factory rep today with questions on several handguns and rifles. When I mentioned the M&P in 357SIG the rep promptly told me that they are discontinued. I asked him again to make sure and he said "yep, we no longer make them. If you find one, buy it". That was a real surprise as I really like the 357SIG caliber.

Have you heard of this or can confirm? Bill

yep, i've read the same thing around the internet. What a shame, my m&p 357 is the best gun i've laid hands on. Accuracy, power, round capacity are excellent. IMO, what a big mistake!

I wonder if it's because they didn't become the "next big caliber" so they decided to discontinue it?

Did they state whether or not they would continue to make the barrel so it could be dropped into the .40FS/.40c or is it just "gone for good"?

Maybe I'll have to pick up the barrel for my .40c that I have coming on Monday.

The rep said to have good luck in finding a barrel and if you find one, buy it cause they are not making any more 357SIG barrels either.

I wonder how the agencies that dropped the Glocks for the M&P357SIG feel about this? Glock will continue to make them. The 357SIG is not the most widely used caliber but it has growing interest from shooters and more LE agencies than you can imagine carry it. HK did the same thing in dropping it and said a 357SIG P30 will never be made. Low and behold a very prestigious federal agency whose SIG 229s in that caliber are nearing replacement. Word is a P 30 in 357SIG will be out this summer. Perhaps Smith will bring it back if the demand is there. Bill

That's strange indeed! Seeing how the New Mexico State Police were supposedly issueing this piece. Matter of fact I think they actually dumped their almost new Glock 31s for the M&P.357. Dale

Glad I bought a factory barrel last month! I bought it to drop in my .40 M&P. I have two others in .357 Sig, a G31 and a HK USPC. I love the .357 Sig round!

I don't really really love the 357 Sig but got a barrel for my M&P 40 PRO. It was a Storm Lake barrel. I have a Storm Lake for my Glock 35 and I know the are truely drop in. I have shot a few rounds (50) of re-loads and a couple of factory rounds. It was the first factory handgun rounds I have gotten in 10 years or more. I am still in sticker shock. Well I did buy some UMC 9mm but the case price was under $7 per 50 rounds at Dick's. That's how long ago it was.

The 357 sig is an impressive round but I am not sure is that much better than the 40 S&W. I am still playing with it. BTW the M&P Pro 40 is the 5 inch model.

The NC Highway Patrol also issues the M&P in .357SIG. In fact, they switched from the SIG P229 about two years ago. I wonder if this will give them reason to change again. As I recall, they had Beretta Cougars in .357SIG for a relatively short time before going to the P229, and it seems like they didn't have those very long either.

Yes, IMHO it is that much better than the .40 S&W round, especially if you ever shoot past 25 yards. The .357 Sig is quite flat-shooting, for a pistol cartridge.

I like the gun and the 357 Sig round. Glad I bought one last year, along with a 40 S&W spare bbl.
What really is strange is that it is so easy for S&W to offer the 357 Sig option on the M&P. Same bolt face, same slide, same frame, same magazines...all they had to do was make the bbls and mark the slides. Seems like a mighlty simple and inexpensive way to offer a different selection from the catalog. Weird.

I think that this might be a mistake. One local Department just awarded S&W a contract for 200 guns.

Just checked on the S&W website, and there is no news about this. Still shows them in the catalog ???

I talked with the Smith Reps at the NRA Convention concerning the M&P 357. They confirmed that general production of 357 pistols has stopped. Limited runs of M&P 357 will be made for law enforcement only upon request or with limited stock. Bill

I had been lurking here for a few weeks. saw this thread a couple days ago. Then I stopped in a local shop and behold they had a used M&P 357 sig. so with some of my charm I traded him my taurus 92 and 120 cash and I have now own a full size sig. nice.

Glad I bought my 357 sig compact a few weeks ago. I'll have no problem getting a 40 S&W drop in barrel for it, so I feel like I have the best of both worlds....nice!

Sad to hear this news!!! I got an M&P 357 a little over a year ago - NIB with night sights for $350!! Talk about a deal!!! And it is a SWEET shooter... Maybe I will have to search for the compact now before they disappear. I also have one of the few Sigmas in 357sig that S&W made. That one doesn't get out much but I need the M&P compact to complete the "family"......

Or maybe because it say "SIG" in it. Can't be having the name SIG on a good S&W thats sac religious. LOL

But on the SIG Sauer 229 that is currently on my hip right now the factory barrel is stamped "40 S&W". The 357SIG chambering is a propriatory round developed in part by SIG Sauer. For the sake of limiting confusion Smith could have extended the same courtesy. lol Bill

I know just poking a little fun. I used a SIG 228 and 220 as a duty weapon for years great guns.

While having no luck on Gunbroker, Auction Arms, or BudsGunShop....Lo and behold, I found and M&Pc in 357sig at my LGS!! And, it was the exact model I prefer- no magazine safety but with a thumb safety. Traded in a NIB Marlin 17hmr that I had won in a raffle and was out the door at $450. Now the family is complete. Will post some photos eventually..

Boy, I love the way my M&P 357 sig fs goes "BOOM!" and no, I wasn't shooting in the air, my phone camera was turned sideways...lol

Well, I just bought an M&P 40 Pro with a 5" barrel today & thought that I was going to buy a factory 357sig barrel for it. I guess I will be purchasing a Storm Lake barrel instead. Bummer, at least I know that the SL barrels are serviceable barrels, but they are not OEM.

Yeah, that wouldn't work since I need a 5" barrel for my gun. S&W hasn't come out with that particular barrel length in 357sig, so I had to buy one from Storm Lake as an aftermarket barrel. Guess S&W won't be coming out with it at all now... It's starting to look like I should have stuck with the 4.25" barrelled gun because that barrel is the one you are showing in your post I believe. I ended up paying $160 for an aftermarket one. Oh well too late now...

This news sucks to be honest. What if our slides crack or something? Are they going to replace them? I can't imagine it's too difficult to make .357sig's when you produce .40's either. Why would anyone shed the best pistol caliber on Earth after they've gained so much LE attention just because of it? Absurd...

While I'm not happy about it, I understand why. I've purchased two 357 M&P's in the past. Both at a heavy discount because they were sitting in my LGS case longer than they should (or would ave if they were any other caliber.) I believe the price of factory ammo is the deterrent for private ownership here. If you plan to shoot it allot, you almost need to reload.
p.s.I also have a M&P 40pro with a storm lake 357 sig barrel. This is my favorite of my M&P's.

I love the .357Sig...have the compact and it's fabulous. I have the 40c as well but prefer the .357. I reload so it's nice to be able to shoot a variety of range loads...it can be stoked pretty good or brought down to a comfortable load for fun.

I wouldn't think that LEO agencies that recently made the switch to the S&W 357SIG would have anything to worry about. S&w, if they are discontinuing 357SIG, will probably only discontinue retail sales. Just like LEO agencies can still get certain 3rd Gens.

Have the FS M&P in 40 with an OEM Smith drop in barrel in 357 sig. Guess I've got a keeper. The Gold Dot 125's work great in the 357.

Glad I got my Full Size a couple of years ago. I also got a 40S&W barrel and it is my winter time EDC piece.

That really wouldn't make much sense. It would have continued to gain market share with LE as it continued showing it's merits. They could have continued public sales as well if they were to continue making them. It's quite simple to make them according to market demand instead of just pumping them out. They no longer even make factory barrels. I wonder if they just did not like .357 and SIG stealing some of .40 S&W's thunder. They may have seen that as being bad for business. Possibly why you don't see a 10mm as well.

Did an internet search which lead me to this thread. I was wanting to purchase three .357sig M&P's. A compact, full size, and 5" Pro model(which was never made). Now I'll have to settle for buying Glocks as Sigs are overpriced imo.

Just did a quick look and they are on the main site (S&W)?as well as a few others dealer sites.
Given that law enforcement seems to be swinging back to 9mm, I'd just hang loose fir a bit and get a carried a lot, slightly used M&P or SIG P226 or 229 when they hit the market.

Gentlemen; I am sure the info is right, S&W is prob putting the .357SIG M&P on a "back burner" due to weak civilian sales. I do know S&W will make just about anything, firearms-wise for an Agency, if they get an order/ contract. So M&P .357's will still be with us, just in limited numbers.
I do know that Gl**k has had trouble getting the G31/32 models to last, due to the extreme power the .357SIG cartridge has. The S*G229 gives a better service life over the long run than just about any other pistol. 'Course the dang things are built like a MBT(Main Battle Tank...lol!) and feel like it on your hip. Heavy & Clunky. Still a good pistol, nontheless. YMMV, of course, just MHO.
I think I heard or read that the Texas DPS are/ were? going to switch or allow Troopers to carry 9mm M&P's. Anyone remember anything like that, please chime in. Thanx.
BTW, just as an aside; Ruger does not stamp their pistols ".40 S&W". Instead, they stamp their pistols ".40 Auto". Interesting, no?

I still see the M&P in .357Sig regularly on the auction sites...Lost Lake rightly pointed out that this is an old thread and it is obvious that Smith continues to make it.

Part of the problem may be that like all calibers of ammunition, the .357 Sig is hard to find ay any sort of reasonable price. Especially when you look at defensive hollow point ammo.

A lot of law enforcement agencies are going to the less expensive 9mm again. Los Angeles Sheriff's Office just purchased M&P 9mm pistols to start issueing to their deputies.

I have a FS M&P in .40, and a friend of mine gave me several thousand rounds of .357 Sig Speer Gold Dot hollow points a few years ago when his agency went to .40 S&W.

I bought an OEM .357 Sig barrel, and I love the round and the pistol. I got a deal on a Glock 32 with an additional .40 S&W barrel. It too is a great pistol.

With the Secret Service and the Air Marshals being the only large Federal Agencies using the .357 Sig cartridge, I don't know how long it will stay in other LE agencies armories. Onlt time and budget constraints will tell.
