Default 9c follower drops mag after firing

I recently purchased a 2006 M&P 9c after having shot and enjoyed the one my Dad owned. We did a dual teardown just to compare the two, since his was a 2010, and there were a few minor differences. We noticed that between 06 and 10 they had changed the follower design, as shown in the pictures (the new one on the left, the old on the right). Since followers are like 2 bucks, we went ahead and picked up a couple to swap into my mags. Before they came in we had shot around 50 rounds, no problems.

Once they came in we swapped one mag to the new follower and took it down to the range. After firing the first round it ejected and seated the next round fine, however it also released the magazine. At first I assumed I had just bumped the release, however it happened 7 times in the following 20 shots. We had also picked up a 17 round full size, which had the new style follower, and it had the same problem. Earlier in the week we had reversed the magazine release from left to right, so we switched it back assuming that was causing some issue. Even after making this change both me and my father had the exact same problem while shooting. Out of curiosity, we loaded up the mag that had the old follower and had no problems with it. We most likely put another 70 rounds through with the old follower, and it did not drop the mag once.

I have no idea how or why the follower would cause this issue, can anyone shed some light?

Quite possibly just tolerance stack, however, IIRC, there was a change (product improvement) in the slide release spring. You might call S&W customer service and see if you can score one of the new springs and give that a try before considering sending the weapon back for the factory to check it out.

A complete slide release including spring is around $15. In the meantime, just run with the original followers.
