Question M&P 9C vs Beretta Px4 Storm Subcompact

Hi everyone! I'm very new to guns personally, although I've been around them my whole life. I'm looking to purchase a gun of my own that I'm comfortable with that is also fun to shoot at the range (hubby is ecstatic lol). I do own an older S&W 38 revolver that's good for personal carry, but it's not much fun and I would like to get more comfortable with a pistol.

I know that I want a compact gun and I've narrowed my choices down to the S&W M&P 9C and the Beretta Px4 Storm Subcompact. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot the compact M&P but I was really impressed with the full size 9. I also shot the Beretta and while I absolutely LOVE the way the subcompact looks, I wasn't as accurate with it (I actually missed the target completely several times at 5-7 yards) and I read some concerning reviews that there may be a sight or even barrel issue with this gun. To be honest I don't want to spend $500 on a gun that needs work right out of the box, but I can't stop thinking about this gun.

Do you guys have any advice for a newbie? I appreciate all comments-TIA!

I think the Beretta is a good looking gun. That is all......I have tried to shoot it and with practice could master it, but feel that it is not something I would like to do since the M&P 9c shoots like a dream right off the bat. I can use my M&P 9c for IDPA and score very well. In fact as well as my full size, with some technique tweaks. The 9 is bigger but very doable for CCW. IMHO.

Default M&P 9c

My M&P 9c was perfect right out of the box. It is very fun to shoot, and shoots well. Get a couple of full size magazines for extra fun! Some M&Ps have rough triggers that may need work.

OnePsychLynne, no matter which you pick someone will tell you you need to change it right away to make it better.

M&P 9c was my first auto and despite what I've read I find the trigger just fine. No need to buy Apex parts, though I'm sure they make a fine product. I just put many K rounds down range and learned the trigger and sights.

I have fired the PX4 subcompact and thought it was fun to shoot but didn't feel quite right in my hand. Don't know anything else about it.

Good luck in your choice.

Dave

Wow! Thanks for the replies. I have been leaning more towards the M&P...my only hesitation was due to the fact I haven't actually shot the compact. How much of a difference is there in recoil or accuracy between the compact and the full size 9? Incidentally, my husband let me shoot the M&P 45 he rented and I liked it a lot better than his S&W 40v which I thought really kicked a lot.

Many will say that the .45 has more of a push as opposed to the kick of the .40. Both are fine calibers but I feel that a +P 9mm will do all I need it to for self defense and the regular 9mm range ammo is cheaper.

Don't know about the full size M&Ps. I have fairly large hands and still prefer the way the compacts fit in my palm. I also find it easier to
re-aquire my sight picture with the shorter sight axis.

From my own personal experience, the M&P compact would be a very good choice. Having owned both the full sized M&P 9mm and the compact, I can tell you there is little difference in felt recoil between the two.

On your other topic, yes, the 40 S&W round is a bit stout... more so than the 45 ACP. The 40 S&W is a good round in a full sized service pistol, but rather tiring to shoot in a polymer framed compact.

I've heard that about the 40 before but (please be gentle) how is the 40 more "snappy" than the 45? Isn't the 45 a larger bullet? (Nothing else to hide here-my ignorance is now fully revealed lol)

Recoil depnds on energy (among other things) which goes up as the square of the speed. In competition, where we must make a certain power factor (momentum) we learn that a heavy bullet going slow has less recoil than a somewhat lighter bullet going faster to make the same power factor. Another one of those "counter-intuitive" relationships in physics. It's also easier to load a heavier bullet than to achieve "uber-velocity" with a light bullet when handloading.

The 9c has very little recoil.

I've pretty much decided on the S&W. I'm so excited! There's a gun show next weekend and hopefully there will be a great deal on one

I have never bought into the "40 is snappier than the .45" or the "40 recoil is harsher than the .45" BS. I shoot both in full size and compact, metal & polymer and neither is difficult to master. Frankly there is little difference between the two. Don't buy the BS and you will be content with your choice. Most people that complain about the .40 either haven't shot it or are just pussies.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the replies. I went with the M&P 9c today and my husband bought it for me as a gift. I'll shoot it at the range Wednesday night and post a review on how accurate I can be

PS...don't feel too bad for him. HE bought the full size M&P 45

Congrats on your purchase. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. Go to the range and enjoy!

Considering that the original poster was a female, the p*****e characterization is a little out of place, I would think. Perhaps a little more care in structuring a reply would be more constructive in mixed company, eh? Better than descending to silly rhetorical strutting.

Silly rhetorical strutting?
Take it that way if you want to. That's not how it was meant and if you do not like it that's just tough. Your strutting like a banty rooster with his chest puffed up only strengthens my conviction to tell it like I see it.

You can tell it like you see it and still use a more respectful language when addressing a lady's question....

Agreed.
I did not realize I was addressing a woman. I feel shame.
and....
My reply to mgo stands. Had he put it like you did, he would have gotten the response you did.
