The best custom gunsmith in our area, maybe in the south eastern USA, just switched from Glock to S&W's M&P and in competitions, went from shooting 40c to 9mm M&P. Personally, I'm presently more inclined to stay w/ a 40c. I thought this guy was Glock to the bone, and I had thought previously (see below repost) that the new MP's were fine, but that really sold me--when this guy, who can have ANY gun, went with the M&P. We had a big gun show recently and hate to admit it, but a customized Glock got my $$$ on what was basically an 'impulse buy' but I will add at least a couple M&P's to my collection, especially as I watch my gunsmith inevitably add some custom touches to his new competion M&P/s.
(repost)-->Recently got a Glock 27 w/ nickel boron treatment, trijicon ns, and although it's sweet, I think I might be a bit better off w/ the S&W 40c M&P espec. w/ the ct option. The MP's trigger, at least for me, pulls nicer, the grip's pretty good too. S&W seems to really have analyzed Glock, done a fine job, even making some improvements on the old police mainstay, all the while keeping the price competitive. At this point, with it being (hopefully) past any "growing pains" it seems like a pistol worthy of serious consideration, even compared to many foreign brands that to some, might seem to have more snob appeal.
