Can you use a Glock recoil spring in a M&P9? I am looking for a slightly weaker spring to make it easier to retract the slide without damaging the gun. I do not use have loads. The local gun shop put a Glock spring in it and I am concerned because the Glock guide rod is plastic with a plastic face where it contacts the frame.

Yup, Glock recoil springs will work fine in a M&P.

Don't bother putting in a Glock spring, which goes in but is a little large and rubs.
Instead, put in a reduced power ISMI recoil spring made specifically for the M&P! I have one in a M&P and it works perfectly!
I just unscrewed the bolt on the end of the M&P Pro steel recoil rod and installed the ISMI spring.

Sounds like you're not manipulating the slide correctly and trying to use the weak "pinch" or "sling shot" method.

Reach over the slide with the support hand, thumb pointed toward your chest and grasp the slide with the meat of your hand and three or four figers, not just one finger and thumb. Push-pull with both hands and release. A 6-year old should be able to cycle the slide this way.

could be...but he could also be an older person that has lost strength in his hands due to age or arthritis and cant grip like he used to. but still enjoys shooting his M&P

He could be lots of things but a six year old can cycle the slide using a more secure grip. Pinching between the thumb and index finger is a very insecure grip.

For someone severely disabled and wants an automatic pistol Beretta still makes a tip up barrel .380 pistol that never needs the slide manually manipulated. And there are plenty of quality revolvers on the market as well. S&W is rumored to make some.
