Can't run it as a production gun, would be a limited/10 gun as I understand. A little advice would be nice.

Any M&P can be used in IDPA.
For reasons unknown, S&W has not submitted the paperwork to put the 5" barrel .40 M&Ps on the USPSA approved production list. If S&W does, they will be added quickly by USPSA.
First advice I'd give you is to buy a 5" 9mm for either IDPA/SSP or USPSA Production (if when you find one) because
both are scored minor power no mater what you shoot. Unless you load down the .40s and change springs, you're putting yourself at a diisadvantage with the full power .40 against the 9mm..
As to whether to get the longslide or 5" Pro, the Pro 5" comes set up for competition (the 4.25 Pro does not).
If you are planning to change the sights and trigger anyway, it is pointless to pay for the Pro package just to throw it out.
I chose the 5" 9mm Pro and shoot it stock in competition.
It would be beneficial to read the equipment rules carefully and shoot both sports before buying a whole new rig, so as to make a more informed choice.
