Default M&P 40 pro? Longslide? Thoughts?

Is the pro version worth the extra dollars. As far as price goes I wonder if it would better to shoot and dry fire practice till the trigger smooths out some. 100 bucks difference would buy plenty of ammo and a decent rig for IDPA/USPSA. Also have a line on a long slide 40. Would the extra 1" be worth it or would it be more of a hassle as far as parts supply go? Can't run it as a production gun, would be a limited/10 gun as I understand. A little advice would be nice.

There have been at least 3 threads in the past two weeks on this subject. You could try a search. Some have been 9mm others both. good luck

Any M&P can be used in IDPA.
For reasons unknown, S&W has not submitted the paperwork to put the 5" barrel .40 M&Ps on the USPSA approved production list. If S&W does, they will be added quickly by USPSA.

First advice I'd give you is to buy a 5" 9mm for either IDPA/SSP or USPSA Production (if when you find one) because both are scored minor power no mater what you shoot. Unless you load down the .40s and change springs, you're putting yourself at a diisadvantage with the full power .40 against the 9mm..

As to whether to get the longslide or 5" Pro, the Pro 5" comes set up for competition (the 4.25 Pro does not).
If you are planning to change the sights and trigger anyway, it is pointless to pay for the Pro package just to throw it out.

I chose the 5" 9mm Pro and shoot it stock in competition.

It would be beneficial to read the equipment rules carefully and shoot both sports before buying a whole new rig, so as to make a more informed choice.

Sorry to have muddied my question so, let me rephrase. Without regard to caliber: is the pro trigger worth the money? Does the long slide offer a noticable advantage. Will continue to search this forum. Am buying a new setup anyway, would just like to start off with my best option.

Yes, unless you plan to replace it with the APEX setup.

Does the long slide offer a noticable advantage.
Yes, it helps with 2 ways: longer sight separation, and easier to make power in USPSA vs the 4.25" barrel.

In case you didn't notice, the Pro comes in both 5" and 4.25" barrels. The 5" has FO sights, the 4.25" has might sights.
Am buying a new setup anyway, would just like to start off with my best option.
The "best option" depends on what Divisions you want to shoot, how well you shoot, and whether you intend to shoot it stock or put in new sights and trigger.
People who want as close to a 1911 comp trigger as possible aren't going to be happy with stock. As a long-time revolver shooter, I thik the Pro trigger is just fine.
If at all possible, shoot them first to see what you like.

Tanks for the reply. I'm unfamiliar with the "apex setup" but will research it further. Will look closely @ the S&W catalog as well in reference to the pro series. As per the " set up" I was refering to, this gun will serve as a Sat @ the range gun as well as Sat @ the lease and boogers in the house gun. Wish I had the funds for dedicated pistols but that is not so for now. thanks again!

I just found a 9MM Pro Series 5" barrel today There are some in .40 out there but I've been trying to consolidate my calibers. Most of my semis are 9MM or .45. I had some .40's but something needed to go so it was those. If any caliber works for you the .40 would be a good selection. Good luck
