Default Failure to extract M and P Pro-Need help

I have been shooting a M&P pro for a long time with no malfunctions.I had some Apex parts installed and tthe next match was a disaster. I keep it clean but recently in a match I had 3 failures to extract.The round stayed there the slide came back,turned loose of the round and tried to feed a new one and the empty case stayed in the chamber. Well you have to pull to slidelock, drop the mag,let the slide go home and extract the fired case, insert the new mag, retract the slide and start shooting again. Well, I dont have to tell you that this malfunction blows you out of the running time wise in a IDPA match.I asked my gunsmith(he is a competitive shooter and builds a lot of custom guns) if he would install a Apex failure resistant extractor and he said no because he has ruined punches and cant get the pin out that holds the extractor. Apex said to send them the slide and they would do it. Does anyone out there have any experience with removing the extractor and have any of you had this sort of malfunction? I have been shooting Winchester white box 115 grain and have shot at least 5000 rounds . The gunsmith installed a APex competition Action Enhancement Kit which improves the trigger pull and reset but has nothing to do with extraction. Then the malfunctions occurred. Any thoughts? Thanks fellow forum members

As far as the Apex extractor, I installed one yesterday and I was surprised how easily the pin came out. Watch Randy's video on YouTube. You cannot start with a standard, long self centering punch. I happened to have a short punch of the correct diameter and with one moderate tap and the pin moved. Then a couple taps with a standard punch and it came right out. Piece of cake.

I installed the FRE just because I like spending money on my guns...and perhaps this will prevent an extraction problem in the future.

But back to basics;
  • Sure you are not riding the slide with a thumb? That will slow the slide and cause extraction issues.
  • After 5,000 rounds have you inspected the extractor closely to be sure the hook is not fouled with powder residue or other obstructions?
  • Factory ammo? Hope you are not having over pressure problems with handloads.

The inquisitive side of me says to remove the APEX parts and re-install the original S&W parts to see if the problem continues or stays. If the problems stays with original parts I would call S&W and get a call tag and let them deal with it on their expense.
Hope that helps somehow....
Randy

Boy if I had $10 for every time I've heard THAT at a match....
Do the Match Director (and yourself) a favor and test modified guns thoroughly BEFORE showing up at a match. If it won't run, park it.
