Plugs for removed thumb safety
Hey folks,
I stated in an earlier thread that I removed the thumb safety from my M&P .45 for several reasons a) I'd like to install a CT & B) One less thing to fumble should I need to use the gun in a SD situation.
So, here's the question. I've heard people mention the availability of plugs to fill the gaps left by the safety .... so, where do I get these plugs? I've written S&W, and do understand they are busy, but never got a response. My LGS looks at me the same way my dog does when I show here a magic trick when I mention these things, and I've tried every keyword I can think of @ Brownwells and didn't get the results I was looking for.
This isn't to say they won't have them, I'm just sayin' those fellas have a couple hundred thousand SKUs, so finding the proper one isn't always that easy.
Any ideas?
Best,

S&W used to send them for free. When I had the external safety removed from my M&P9c about a year ago, I emailed them and I received a set within a week, free of charge, even though the CS rep advised me not to remove the safety. They must have had lots of requests since then, because I've heard more than one person say that S&W no longer does that.

I just recieved my plugs from S&W at no cost. Call CS, and they will be happy to send you a pair.

I just installed the plugs and I can tell you that it wasn't easy. You have to remove the sear housing block and it is almost impossible to insert the sear housing block after both plugs are in place. I had to insert one plug first, put the sear block in place and then lift the block just enough to have room to insert the second plug. You have to be careful not to lose a couple of springs in the process.

Disabling safeties on DFG
I think anyone who disables a safety device on a gun they are likely to use in a defensive manner is making a huge mistake.

Why so? .... My thinking is that its one less thing for me to fumble, and keeping the booger hook off of the trigger along with other standard safety procedures would suffice.
But, even with that said, I'm always appreciative to hear from a real professional.

Disabling a safety device...
...or otherwise modifying a DFG is lawyer desert if you ever have to shoot someone. Even if you are/were completely righteous in the use of your firearm, the plaintiff's attorney (you will be sued) will try to convince the jury that any alteration you made to the firearm was in order to make it easier to shoot people with. It's not that simplistic, but you get the idea. And heaven forbid you accidently shoot someone with a firearm that you've disabled a safety feature on. First, you might be lucky to stay out of prison, and second, I don't see how a PI attorney could lose that lawsuit. Since you modified the firearm you can forget S&W testifying for you; the plaintiff's attorney will have a S&W expert testifying against you. That's why they tell you and everyone else, don't disable the safety device. It's a liability nightmare.

Ahh, gotcha. That makes complete sense and I wasn't looking at it from that aspect. Thank you.

Your thinking is sound from a manual of arms point of view. One less thing to worry about and all that but I believe the professional is referring to the fact that the prosecution now has evidence that you are so reckless that you would go as far as disabling a safety device on a deadly weapon. Hypothetically speaking of course, in a court room after a self defense shooting. Ayoob says it so much more eloquently than I can, I'm just paraphrasing.
Why not just get the model without the safety to begin with?
Well said Magnumdood, that's what I was going for.

Worthy of discussion but you left one thing out; by removing the manual thumb safety and installing the filler plugs you have not changed the design of the gun. You are configuring the the gun without a thumb safety as designed by the mfr and with the mfr's assistance. Big difference.

If you have a problem with a thumb safety...
...buy a Glock.

I bought it from a friend for a s-s-s-s-s-smooooookin' deal.
Also, I'm happy to say I took the advice of a previous poster, called up S&W customer service, and the nice fella on the other end of the phone says 'sure, no problem, lets just get your address and we'll getcha a set out free of charge!' ....
It's been a good gun day, I also got my trigger spring in from Brownwells (WAY faster service than I thought) and got that installed with a bit of patience!
Thanks again for all the help, folks!

I'm on the side that this modification would make things difficult for you in the court room if it came to that. But it is interesting that S&W will send you the plugs for free. They are in essence giving their approval of this operation. Seems that would help your case. But who knows. I don't like having a safety on mine and wish I had bought the model without a safety but I think I'll leave mine where it is.
