Well i'm new to the forum but i just sold my FN FNP 40 and bought a S&W M&P 40 pro. Went out on thursday to shoot it for the first time and love it already. What I would like to know is what ammo and what grain bullets shoot best in these great pistols.

Despite being made virtually identical, its not unheard of that individual pistols of the same make and model will favor different types of ammo, and so will shooters. As the original .40 round was a 180 grain bullet moving at around 900 feet per second, use that as a baseline. Lighter weight hollow points will likely move faster, but may also produce larger shot groups. That is pretty much standard with all calibers. I have little to no experience with the M&P 40s, but have not noticed much difference in the accuracy of 165 and 180 grain bullets, either hollow point or ball out of other 40 pistols. From the specs I've read, the lighter 135s and such have a higher velocity and higher muzzle energy, but the groups spread out. It terms of function, most all factory loads will work in any modern pistol, but you'd better try them first to make sure. My full size 45 does not seem to like 185 grain ball as well as it likes 230 grain stuff. The differences are subtle, but I'd use 230 in competetion or for defense when I really didn't want to take the chance of having to clear a malfunction. Enjoy your pistol.

Default M&P .40 Pro Ammo

Here is my 40 Pro. I use Winchester PXD1 180 grain for carry use.
40 rounds at 25'. For target I use 180 grain FMJ mine seems to like the 180 grain for tighter groups.

Welcome! I'm pretty new to these forums as well. I have been reading these forums for quite some time now and there is some very good information on here. As far as EDC ammo I use Hornady Critical Defense - for range time I use Winchester 180gr.

Welcome. You chose a very good pistol. Practice ammo should be FMJ (full metal jacket). Walmart has the best pricing and you will find your choice to be Winchester 180 grain, UMC (250 round yellow box) 180 grain and Tulammo 180 grain. Buy the cheapest.

For prtection ammo in a 5" barrel, you would probably want to use 155, 165 or 180 grain bullets. I use 165 grain CorBon in my full size 40's.

My 40 pro seems to like 165 grain over 180 grain. I always seem to get tighter groups with it. I carry mine with 165 grain Golden Sabers in it.

I'd stay away from the Tula, I've never shot it but a couple of days ago it was jamming my father in law's Glock like mad. He tried some Winchester I had and no problems. Could it be the steel casings?

I have had good success with Tula in all of my polymer guns, and even in my 1911's

Sorry to hear your dad had issues with it. Its funny how some guns of the same make are a little more ammo sensitive than others. It just proves the point of making sure your protection gun will feed the ammo selected. Safe shooting.
