Default New M&P22 for me + questions

Just picked her up yesterday at my local shop. $349. noticed the mag wont drop free. guess that due to the mag safety. i can see the lever where it operates but has anyone been able to defeat the mag safety yet? looks like you could almost pin it back somehow...

Extra capacity in the lower mag right? Nice. One extra round is a good move.

How does the m&p 22 compare to the feel, operation and handling of the m&p 9? Does anyone know? It could almost pay for itself used as a trainer for the full sized.

I can't compare it to an M&P 9 but it compares very favorably with my XDM 9.

I got mine so that my new shooter wife could get comfortable with a semi auto and the shooting experience. I also looked at it being a good less expensive practice piece for myself.

I got mine last week and to see how well it fit in for the training aspect, I shot a mag with it and then a mag with my 9 then I kept doing that for several mags. It was no problem switching from one to the other.

The only thing I wasn't comfortable with on the 22 was the blacked out rear sights. I'm used to the 3 dots on my XDM. So yesterday I painted the rear sights in a bright orange. This is probably more specific to me since I have "old" eyes and wear bifocals. Someone who is comfortable with blacked out sights, etc would probably be fine with the stock config.

I am very satisfied with the piece and my wife loves shooting it, so it has lived up to my expectations.

By the way, I put 200 rds of CCI mini mags through it with no problems at all. The piece appears to be well designed and well made.

@evnash,
what brand is your p22 adapter on your M&P22?

Can you lock your slide back and check down the muzzle end and see if you have any exposed threads, internally, from your adapter?

Mine does and wonder if that is a problem when shooting and thread scraping the bullet projectile or not.

The bullet should not come into contact with the adapter threads. I would however be worried about spent powder and debris getting into the threads and making it hard to remove the adapter. I would check my m&p22 and adapter but I'm away from home for work.

There is about 5 oz. difference in weight and identical in size. I've had mine since August of last year and it has ran flawless with around 6000 rounds through it. The pictures posted show the 22 and full size 9 on the scales for a weight comparrison and the other 2 with a light and in my CC holster. These pictures are from early on, I have since removed the thumb safety and changed the front and rear sights.

I wouldn't without snap caps, since it's a rimfire you risk damaging the firing pin.

Smile What's the Difference btw 10 and 12 rd?

Dear All:

I have been pining for an M&P 22 to train and teach with. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find one. Gallery of Guns had one but by the time I could respond to the notice, it was gone.

My one question is: what is the difference between the 10 and 12 rd, is it a magazine extension? Is it better to have the 10 rd (e.g., cost of mags).

I was also thinking of shooting steel challenge with it. I have a "Mosquito,' but the trigger is awful!

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

DrNo

As far as I know, the 10 rd mags cost just as much as the 12. Both were shown as $32 when I ordered my 12 rounders. To me the difference is probably the size of the follower. The mags are the same length overall. The reason for the 10 rd one is to comply with state laws that restrict magazine load capacity.

I ordered my gun through my local gun store and it took a month to arrive.

Also, I don't have any other 22s to compare it to but I find it an excellent trainer for my XDM 9mm. I got mine for my wife to learn how to shoot and she is getting better and better with it and loves using it.

Smile Thanks!

I figured it had to be something with the mag, since the advertised gun weights were the same.

I probably will have to go the order&wait route.

Thanks for the quick response!

I found that 12 rounders were unavaible so I ordered a 10 round (Came in two days) Then I Cut the plastic peg in the mag and now I have a twelve rounder. Legal in my state.

I'm a little late to the party on the M&P22. Too bad that as per S&W's own website, it explains that it's built abroad by Walther/Umarex. I know S&W is the US distributer for Walther and only backs Walther guns in the US with a one year warranty, although I'm rather sure they back the M&P22 with the same lifetime warranty other S&W products carry. Some of Walther's guns are pretty good, some have slipped quite a bit in quality. I was a bit surprised that the M&P22 weighs almost exactly what an M&P 40 with a 4.25 inch barrel weighs, (24 vs 24.25 ounces) so it's pretty 'stout' no doubt and the M&P22 weighs a whopping 9 ounces more than Walther's P22.

From S&W's website:

>>Overview
SKU: 222000

The M&P22 is sure to be a popular addition to the M&P line of semi-auto pistols. Designed as a dedicated .22LR, the M&P22 pistol combines the look, feel and familiar operating features of the trusted M&P series of centerfire pistols.

The M&P22 is ideally suited for training or simple shooting enjoyment with the popular and inexpensive .22LR cartridge.

Made by the .22 experts at Carl Walther, GmbH for Smith & Wesson.

Availability subject to applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.<<

Nobody has really come out with quality semi automatic pistol that shoots the 22 magnum load--now if S&W could pull that off, that would be great. It would be no small feat, as the 22 magnum is intended for rifles and Kel-Tec's PMR-30 just isn't the charm:

Review of Kel-Tec PMR-30

In the meantime, at least some parts for the somewhat pricey S&W and Walther 22LR are interchangeable:

Walther P22/S&W M&P22 Adapter - GEMTECH

I would really like to have one of these! I need more firing time with the M&P, but the ammo plus range fees make it a bit pricey to do as much as I would like. If I could just trade my 6" Neos Inox, I could probably sneak it past the wifey.....

But I am also trying to figure out how to get a real AR past her!

Good news, I noticed they were in stock at Bud's on Sunday. Placed an order, it will be here tomorrow! I checked just now and they are still in stock. Hopefully this means you won't have to wait long if you order locally.
