Default What hoppes solvent should I use?

Hello,

I just purchased a .40c for concealed carry and was wondering what hoppes solvent I should use? I found the boresnake on Amazon and was hoping that someone might be able to share an Amazon link with the solvent I should use? Do I need a different one for the bore and one for the rest of the pistol?

Thanks in advance.

Good old Hoppes #9 would be good for the bore but i'd use a gun oil for the lubrication and exterior wiping down parts. I prefer "Butchs Bore Shine" if you will be shooting jacketed bullets. This will remove copper fouling really well. And I also use Remoil for exterior of gun or a similar product.

So this would work? Could I use this for the precision oiling points?

Those items should work. Have you priced the items at your local gun or sport shop. If you pay shipping I would think it would pay to shop local.

It's actually spelled Ballistol. And it's good stuff! I use several different things but this is my #1 goto product on everything but my AR. Love it on my revolvers. Unlike so many others you don't have to worry about getting it on wood, plastic or leather. And it's great against rust and one of the few things out there that actually does help remove lead. A true CLP.

I have a bunch of different products, but always finish off with Hoppes #9. Guns just don't seem "clean" unless they smell like Hoppes when I'm done. Hoppes also has a special copper cleaning version of #9, but regular #9 cleans copper, too. Hopps Elite Gel is good stuff, too. As I get older, I'm staying away from the harmful chemicals found in most cleaners. There's a whole line of bio-degradeable, non carcinogen containing cleaners out there. Read the back of some of these cleaners . "This product contains ingredients KNOWN to cause cancer". M-Pro 7 has a whole line of the stuff. If you ever shoot lead, pick up a Lewis Lead Remover from Brownells. I scrubbed and scrubbed with everything I had and I could still see the lead. One pass with the Lewis and the lead came out in long strips. Amazing product.

I have not used #9 since I tried Hoppe's Elite.

Cleans every bit as good as #9, but without the smell and hazards.

A bore snake and CLP is all ya need. There is no need to clean the self-limiting copper from the barrel. If you insist note it's right back the next time you shoot the pistol anyway.

Hoppes #9 best use is a very masculine cologne.

Thanks for the help guys, I actually went to the local store and picked up a Hoppes cleaning kit. Pistol worked great after a nice cleaning.

I like Bore Tech Eliminator. It is non toxic and does a great job of dissolving copper. I love the smell of Hoppes. I got the Hoppes #9 air freshners and gave them out as gifts. Everyone loved them. If #9 was non toxic I would use it as cologne.

Years ago Hoppes #9 contained benzine, bad stuff. My 10 year old hands were occasionally soaked in it. I believe that it is eliminated in most products now.

Shooter's Choice. I stopped using #9 years ago for BreakFree CLP but, at times, it isn't aggressive enough. I still buy CLP by the gallon but Shooter's Choice cuts through the tough stuff in no time at all.

Unlike most people, I find the #9 smell quite objectionable. Shooter's Choice also has a strong odor but it doesn't bother me like #9.
