M&P 9 Conversion
Can an M&P 9mm be converted to a .40 Cal. I am looking to get an M&P mostly for the range and occasional carry. Depending on ammo cost I debating about which one to get.
Thanks

You can put a .40 topend on a 9 frame, but easier/cheaper would be to get a .40 and a 9mm conversion barrel. Plus appropriate mags for each of course.

Have heard from lots of guys who have gone from .40 to 9mm with just a barrel and mag change but they say you can't go the other way without changing the slide too.

Get the 40 you can go down but can't go up. There are numerous threads on this. To go from 40 to 9 you just the barrel and magazines. At least by me they are both the same price so why not go bigger.

One last question, I can just swap the barrel? Is it as easy as it is opn a 1911? Where do I buy just the barrel? I just priced .40 ammo and 9mm ammo so this is a option for plinking.
Thanks

Yep, all you need is a Storm Lake .40 to 9mm conversion barrel ($105 from ineedmoregear.com) and 9mm magazines. The full size mags fit compact guns, so you have capacity options. My 40c shoots great with the 9mm barrel, and much cheaper for ammo.

I have spoken to a few guys who used the standard Smith 9mm barrel to convert from .40 to 9mm. The Smith barrels are a lot cheaper but everyone seems to be out right now.

By the way. Pretty much everytime this thread comes up someone will post that it is absolutely impossible to do the conversion because of the difference in the breech face. However, there are a lot of guys who have done it and have fired hundreds of rounds with no problems or ill effects.
