Default Is it ok to settle? Need opinions please

I've been looking for a M&P 45c for quite some time now, with no luck. I had planned to buy from Buds but of course now that I have the money he doesn't have the gun. My question is do you think I would be ok settling for a 40c? I know the 40 is a capable caliber for EDC, and the 40c carries a couple more rounds. Whats everybody's thoughts on this? Thanks for the opinions.

Go with whatever you are more comfortable with.

If you like the .45 better, then it's worth waiting for it.

Don't make a "stinky" compromise only because you are tired of waiting.

Don't compromise, you'll always have the gun you actually wanted in the back of your mind.

Thank you all. I know I should wait, but my finger is twitching for a new gun. Could that be my trigger finger? lol. I'll wait, I agree with you all. Once the new wears off I'll start thinking about the 45 again.

You do know that there is a significant size difference between the .45 and the .40 right? Personally I think the .40's smaller size makes a better CCW piece, but you need to hold/shoot each and see what feels best to you. If you have done this and like the .45 better then wait and get what you want.

I am with FDE. There is a huge size difference. I wanted a M&P45c in the worst way. Gun range only had the full size 45 available for rent. The FS 45 and compact 45 are nearly identical in grips... but one is shorter.

Long story short: I am no longer in the market for an M&P45c since it's a bit big for my hands. You really need to at least hold an FS 45 before you buy.

But don't settle for a 40c if you really want the 45c.

Buy one from someone else, that way you don't have to wait and you get what you want.

Get a list of Gun Dealers in your local area, etc. Depending on local laws etc.
Then pick a reasonable price and call around. You might be surprised.

I have settled many times in life, and not just with guns, and bought something that wasn't really what I wanted, but because I could get it now instead of waiting. Then, I end up later getting what I wanted in the first place, and selling or trading my initial purchase at a loss (if at all.)

Unless you NEED a gun for self-defense NOW (as in you don't have one at all) then you should wait to get what you want. You will only regret it later if you don't...unless, of course, you get more enjoyment out of buying something now, rather than the actual gun itself...like the song says, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with."

If at all possible, though, you should rent a .40 and a .45 and compare them (if you haven't fired one or both before.) Some people don't like the recoil of the .40 compared to the .45, and some don't like either one.

The 45 is a softer recoiling gun, but by no means would you be 'settling' with a .40. You can drop a 9mm or .357 barrel in a .40 and have 3 guns in one. The gun is a touch smaller and easy to conceal, and besides, you're going to get the .45 someday anyway, so if the .40 is available now I'd get that and when the .45 comes in get that one too.

Again, Genitron.com will tell you a fair amount about recoil in various pistols. I'm with Lost Lake, in that I like the versatility of the M&P 40c and especially if it was a first pistol, I'd go with it over getting a 45 initially.

I bought a 40C last year and I've been very happy with it. I purchased a Storm Lake 9mm barrel and magazines from a fellow forum member and am pleased with the versatility. I don't think I'd be really anxious to shoot a .45ACP out of such a small sized piece, but YMMV.

Best of luck,

Dave

I don't think I'd like shooting 45 in a small gun as much as do shooting 40.

How much recoil does the 40 have. I know its everyones opinion but can I get an example. Is it like shooting 357 out of a 2in J frame at all?

No no no no. Recoil is highly subjective, but I don't think the .40 recoil is that much more than a 9mm in the M&P line.

I just feel like they are two very different guns. I could see the argument if this was a 9c instead of a 40c. I bought a 40c. And I might just go buy a 45c next just to have something similar but different. But I wouldn't say the 40c is settling at all. I love mine.

I carry for one reason and one reason only. I don't shoot comp. I have shot both the MP45 midsize 4"(mine) and the MP45c 3.5(my buddies). Felt recoil was about the same, 45c carry wieght is a little less, but nothing you will notice on a daily basis. Consealability is the same, I carry in a shoulder rig. I like a 45, have never carried anything else. I have shot everything from a .25 to .44 mag in a lot of different makes and configurations. Nice guns all, but it's the 45 for me!

The 40 S&W is not anywhere near like shooting a .357 magnum.

The 45 is a softer recoil than the .40. The .40 is 'snappy'.

My .40 full size and my 9mm compact feel the same to me. That's shooting 124gr Lawman in the 9 and 180gr FMJ in the .40. Other rounds will feel different.

Think of it this way, recoil is a factor of power. Less recoil in the same gun means less power. There is no free lunch, you're not going to have a high energy round with low recoil!

You can add weight to reduce recoil. A full size rifle weighs more than a handgun, and the same round shot out of each will have less recoil in a rifle.

I see someone else already mentioned this, but there are several M&P 45compacts listed on Gunbroker for what appear to be fair prices...not sure why you would have to wait for Buds?

Never settle, you won't be happy, the 40 is a good round but the 45 has more choices in ammo and better resale.

If you settle, everytime you take it out of your safe, Self will say "it's not what I really wanted, but it's what I've got". If you wait, Self will say "man look at that thing! is it great or what!!" So for my 2cents, Wait! It will be worth it!

Wait. The perfect gun always pops up right after you quit looking. It's happened to me twice, just on this forum.

I thought the 45c had a 4" barrel? The only compact part was the grip and mag capacity. Am I wrong?

No, you are not wrong. Basically the same gun as the mid-size, but with a shorter grip. Both have 4" barrels. I had one in my hands... to me, it felt a bit big to CCW.
