Default knowledge on sights please

I'm just wondering if I would benefit from better sights. I have the standard M&P sights on my 4.25 FS .40. The gun has a laser mounted on the rail. I use it for range time and HD.

What type of sights would I most benefit from? High Vis? Night sights? Red dot? I know all of these are a relatively expensive mod, which is why I'd like advice. I do not want to break the bank, but I want enough improvement to justify my purchase.

Thanks.

for the distances you shoot at, is accuracy a concern, or perhaps eyesight that makes it difficult at times to find your aim/target quickly (if not using the laser)?

You said range and home defense was you main interest. My recommendation is buy more ammunition and practice a lot. The way to think about self defense is that anything longer than 10 yards isn't self defense . The stock sights work well for most situations. Practice point shooting at close distance. In a real self defense situation you won't have time to line up sights. (or, more bluntly, if you take the time to line up sights, you're in trouble). Target shooting is another story, you can spend a lot of money and it's fun, but those type sights are, in self defense situations, more of a distraction than an advantage.

Great responses. The eyesight ain't what it used to be. You are right regarding self defense. I'm shooting paper targets at 7 to 10 yards and my laser is sighted in for that range. With it on, I never miss. Can't say that about a quick shot with the iron sights. I would like to improve my sight/ target acquisition speed and thought a larger , more visible set of sights or red dot might help. There is always the added benefit of the night sights for a late night HD scenario.

I have a 9mm Shield and replaced the factory sights with a set of TFO sights. Tritium and Fiber Optic. They are fantastic! Great during the day in any lighting condition and very visible in the dark too. I suffer from "old eyes" and these make a world of difference.

I've read reviews on Amazon that those are not surviving on the .40 cals.
