My M&P22 came well oiled with some preservative grease in the nooks and crannies. Good idea since these are shipped from Germany and travel a long way. Cleaning the pistol I was impressed with the build quality. The slide for example appears to be high grade aluminum and not some (guess what this is) type of metal, exhibiting first rate fabrication you'd expect from a company like Walther. The frame is also well done and the internal parts look well made. So after all the preservative cleaned off and some FP10 lubricant applied it was off to the range. Luckily we're having an exceptionally warm February.
100 rnds CCI Mini Mags 40grn. Perfect functioning and very accurate.
100 rnds Federal 710s 40 grn. Perfect functioning and again accurate.
50 rnds CCI Stingers 32 grn HP. Perfect funtioning, accurate and a great load.
My trigger was very good out of the box and the sights were dead on with the 40 grn loads. This remarkable little pistol was 100% reliable and a lot of fun to shoot. Smith & Wesson and Walther did an excellent collaboration on this one. The design and build quality was quite frankly much better than I was expecting. I look forward to a lot of range time with this M&P22. Now I just have to wait for my dealer to get the extra magazines he ordered. I ordered this pistol right after it was announced at the 2011 Shot Show. It took my dealer a long time to get his first shipment, but it was well worth the wait. This one was test fired on 11/11/11 which reminds me of the date and time The Great War ended.
Anyone contemplating buying one of these, I highly recommend one. This is going to be a big seller for Smith and Wesson, and though not made here by them it is a handgun worthy of the name.

It must be karma. Your gun was built on my son's birthday (mo and day) and my m&p 22 was built on my birthday (10/20).

What's good about the karma is that I have put over 1700 rounds on mine since I got it on Jan. 4th. No problems at all. So you should be able to look forward to a lot of enjoyment.

They are fun to shoot. I had a ton of grease in mine too. Enjoy

Here are a couple of photos showing how this sweet pistol shoots. 1'st is a 10 shot group fired offhand at 15 yards using Federal 710s 40 grn copper plated solids. 2'nd is another 10 shots making for a 20 group at 15 yards offhand. I'm glad my pistol shoots to the POA with this ammo since I just bought 2 5000 round cases of it. When the weather warms up I shoot some groups from a bench rest which I'm sure will tighten them up considerably, but for plinking offhand I'm more than satisfied with the accuracy.

Thoughts please ????????????? Seriously looking at one as a inexpensive to shoot trainer as I have the 9 & 40 full size which I love. My sons have Sig mosquitos which are really nice , accurate & fun BUT the are super fussy about what they'll fire.

I've had mine since Jan 4th and have put through over 1700 rds of CCI mini mag, Federal 550 bulk from Walmart and Federal 525 Champion bulk.
Only one or two failures with the Walmart ammo. No problems with the gun itself other than having to polish off a couple spots of bluing from the ramp.

The gun shoots very accurately once I dialed in the rear sight to my satisfaction.

As for training, I can switch from it to my XDM 9mm back and forth with no problem. There is no re-learning or second guessing. I think the ability to shoot hundreds of 22 rds versus a limited number of 9mm has had a positive affect on my accuracy. I have gradually been increasing my target distance since getting the M&P. The groups I was getting at 7 yards a couple of months ago, I am now getting at 15 yards. I credit that to the extra amount of practice that the cheaper ammo has allowed me to do.

I got the M&P to get my wife comfortable with shooting and she loves it. She was a little intimidated by the 9mm.

Gordie, The M&P22 is a perfect trainer since you already have full size M&Ps. Try one and I think you'll be as impressed as I have been with this 22 version. Smith & Wesson and Walther did an excellent job of designing and building this pistol.

Isn't the M&P22 factory built along side Walther's P22, but is much heavier in build (about half a pound heavier) and styled along the lines of the M&P but is essentially patterned after the P22? I have heard that the P22 is nice to shoot and the M&P22 gets great reviews here, but that the much lighter slide's on the P22 is susceptible to cracking if you shoot a lot in a short period. Obviously, besides the slide being much heavier on the M&P22, there are some other differences.

Aren't both handguns (MP22 &P22) actually manufactured in Germany by Umarex, of toy gun/airsoft fame?

Light guns don't have to be junk--FNH's 5 seven (FN Five-seveN) is no toy gun by a long shot, but shoots a devastating round with very little recoil from a solidly built, yet very light handgun. For about a $1000--it should!

The M&P 22 is made by Walther to S&W specs. It has an aluminum slide as opposed to the P22's zinc alloy.

The P22 has different internals in the action, I believe. The barrel appears to be the same as the P22 because it has the threaded barrel with a sleeve. The P22 has problems with the fingers on the trigger interfering with the slide. I base that comment on the repair procedures outlined in what P22 users call the "bible".

The P22 weighs about 15 oz versus the M&P 22 oz.

Several sites I went to, including S&W, list the M&P22 right at 24 ounces. S&W indicates the slide is made of "Aluminum-Aerospace Alloy" on a "metal frame". I wonder where the extra half pound or so (nine ounces) on the S&W22 versus the Walther P22 all comes from? Walther's site doesn't reveal too much, but says the P22 has a "polymer frame" and of course in the standard model, the barrel's a bit over half an inch shorter than the M&P22. Magazine capacity is 10 rounds versus the 12 rds on the M&P22. Most sites indicate the P22 weighs in at 15.1 ounces.

With a S&W lifetime warranty, a stouter build and adjustable sights also available from the factory on the S&W M&P22, I'd go with the Smithy if I had to choose--I think it's worth the extra $$$.

A friend of mine just picked up his M&P22 and since it warmed up to 45 degrees this afternoon we wringed it out. It went through a 550 round box of bulk Federal 36 grn HPs flawlessly. What a fun pistol and a surprisingly accurate one. Needless to say my friend was impressed. Everyone who has an M&P pistol should at least try one of these.

Well, after a long wait I finally got a 12 rnd'er, only 10 rnd'ers were available, & it was worth the wait! Got 800 + rounds thru it & it's a pleasure, no problems of any kind, eats evereything, acurrate, affordable to shoot & FUN. Thanks again for all your input.

Gordie, it takes about 2 minutes to make a 10rd into a 12rd magazine.

Pull the base plate, and remove the 1/2" aluminum spacer, and put magazine back together.
