Default Need info on 38 S&W ctg

I have run across a 38 S&W special CTG. model 10-5, blued, 5 inch barrel, wood checkered grips. S/N D369315. This gun is in the box with original S&W waxed paper. The gun has never been fired. the owners manual is missing. there is not a mark on this gun it is literally brand new.
what year was it manufactured ? what is the value ? The guy that owns it wants to sell but I am not sure what to offer. I would like a good deal If I decide to buy it but I also do not want to short him in the deal. He has no idea what it is worth.
I do have pictures I can send or post if I can figure out how to post.
I can not figure out how to delete this post. I will re-post in the correct area under revolvers

Hello moveon, and welcome to the forum! The gun in question is actually referred to as a Model 10-5. The "CTG" is short for "cartridge" referring to the 38 Special. I don't have my Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson handy, so I can't help much with the age. For value, the Model 10s in general are pretty common, so they seem to usually go for $300-350, but I am sure someone has a better estimate. You can always go to one of the auction sites and check the sold guns.

Incidentally, this is a revolver, so it probably should have been posted in one of the revolver subforums. I am sure a mod will come along and move it.

Again, welcome!

The serial number dates to 1971 or 1972. In my area, a "new in the box" Model 10-5 with a 5 inch barrel would likely be priced around $400 to $450 in a gun shop. Prices may vary depending on your local market.

Hope this helps.

Steve

I wish I lived where you do, I haven't seen any for that price except well used guns.
