Red face M&P .22 General Questions

Hi all -

First time gun owner (waiting for applause and not sure why) sounds like an AA opening, "Hi My name is Killshot801, and I like guns"

Anyway I just purchased a M&P .22. For $80 more I could have gotten a 9mm, but after reading some reviews I thought starting with a .22 would be much less expensive to get the hook in. It was also helpful telling the wife that a .22 is just a small step up from a pellet gun. My thought is to get hooked then buy a 9mm or 40 and have Tomb Raider side by side action.

Anyway part II
All questions about the M&P .22

1. Where can I find extra magazines?
2. How much should I expect to pay?
3. Why does the tip of my thumb hurt?
4. I read you can use .40 .45 or 9mm rear sights to upgrade the .22 for about $14, so where do I get those?
5. What is the best holster with level II safety? (So far seems like blackhawk will work)
6. Can I add a red dot sight?
7. How tight can I expect to group from 5/10/15 yards?
8. Will a .22 go through a 2x4 piece of wood?

Feel to answer one or all questions.

1. Good luck.
2. Lots, they are rare.
3.
4. S&W will send you free ones most likely, otherwise any online retailer.
5. Best holster?? Good luck again.
6. Sure.
7. The gun will out-shoot you.
8. Yep.

1. Natchez....product # SW422510000

2. $27.49

3. Which thumb? strong hand? support hand?

4. Call S&W. People have been reporting they will send them for free.

5. Don't know about Level II. Heck I don't even know what that is. I carry mine in a Crown Holster as it also fits my M&P Pro. Love it! I carry my P30 in a Crown Holster every day.

6. No idea.

7. I can shoot tight groups with mine.

8. Yes

Lostlake & Jeepgal Thanks for the feedback.

1. They just got a big stock of the 10 Round still waiting for the 12 Round
2. He quoted $32
4. Just called S&W CS, tried to get the sights for free nothing doing. $16.50 but they confirmed all will work.
5. Remember I am new, but I think lvl 2 means it has a safety that holds it in place.
6. You can shot tight groups from what distance?
8. Will a .22lr from a pistol go through Two (2) 2x4's?

Thanks again

Here's a link to the 12rd. Says its in stock. $27.49

http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm...ID=SW422510000

I can shoot tight groups to about 15 yds. I've been practicing to about 25yds lately, but I suck!

My Crown Holster has great retention. I could stand on my head and my pistol wouldn't fall out. (If I could get on my head) lol

Nice! Now shoot the target while standing on your head. Then I would be impressed. I bought three mags and a holster. Not sure if I should thank you or ask you for a loan

Thanks again!

You don't want a loan from me...I charge way to much interest!

I've been using my M&P 22 to practice my qualification for a private gun club. We have to shoot 5 rounds at 25 yards and it just has to hit the paper. They just want to make sure you can keep your shot in the berm. I was out practicing yesterday at 25 yds and I was keeping all my shots in about a 4 inch group. I wish I could do that with my 9mm!

Take a firm grip, a good sight picture concentrating on the "FRONT SIGHT", then SsssssLllllllOoooooooWwwwwwwwwwLllllllYyyyyyyy press the trigger.

You'll be surprised. The key to the above is you must keep doing it... Practice, practice, practice.

Okay Herman .40

You never know when a couple of 2x4's will be heading your way. Luckily mrasgt has a bayonet chainsaw attachment he uses for Zombies.

Really I just wanted to know what kinda power to expect from a .22 round.

Jeepgal1961 I too am a lefty, and after watching "Top Shot" I think I could shot up side down. Jeepgal, did you switch the maz release to the other side? Was it easy? I pick mine up tomorrow and can't wait. Plus I ordered the 3 mags, so I may need to take a sick day next week.

Wish me luck.

Default I'm a noob on this forum, thanks to jeepgal1961

Thanks for the wealth of info, just ordered 2 mags for my new MP22 LR, when it seems no one had or even "knew" the gun.
BTW, loving it very much, shot perfect with CCI's - over 100 rnds.
Some hiccups (about 15) with Winchester 555 (Walmart) not ejecting properly - about 300 rnds. It did get better as shots progressed and it was getting broken in.

Talking

I've had my M&P 22 for about 2 months. I use the same UM's holster that I use for my 9mm and 357Sig. I got in 4 extra mags last week from Lipsey's in Baton Rouge( on my FFL). So naturally, I shot some on Saturday to break in my new mags. I was using some Wal-Mart bulk Remington 550 Golden bullets, they worked most of the time, a few FTF. The WW 555 is hit or miss with the M&P22, but the Federal 550 bulk ammo works OK. I had a 100 rd box of WW Super Speed 1300fps round nose coated ammo to try, also from WM. It functioned 100%. My gun is more accurate than I am. Remember the guns and the mags come from Germany, Get them while you can. Bob!!

BTW, I ordered on the phone from natchez, and paid just under $67 with shipping. It is less money on shipping to order over on the ph. Now I cant wait, they said it was a 2 day turnaround, shipping tomorrow, so I expect them by Thursday.

Hey Guys,

More questions for ya.

I got my new gun (YEA !!! ) now just need time to go shooting. I was reading in the instructions that you should clean it before first time fire? Is this a strong suggestion, or is this a must do to ensure longevity of the pistol?

I successfully field stripped it, and even reversed the magazine release to the other side. So now I just need to get a cleaning kit????

Another question I had is the slide release / Lock is really tight. I can't work it with my dominate / shooting hand (left) I can only get it to release on the right side. Anyone else have this issue? It seems as though it is ambidextrous but not quite. Is there a way to loosen the tension?

Anyone recommend a good cleaning kit?

Thanks

Thumbs up Cleaning

It has always been a habit with me to inspect, clean and oil a new (to me) firearm, I feel it just makes good sense. The probability is it has been fired before you got it (even if a factory test fire) so why not start it out on a good footing.

Your local gun store should have an array of .22 cleaning kits just remember to clean the barrel from the chamber end forward using a .22 caliber jig.

Enjoy your pistol.

My M&P22 came from the factory with a LOT of grease in/on the guide rod and elsewhere. After the 1st range trip even more of it began to seep out once things got heated up so I'd say it would be wise to clean before doing any significant shooting with it.

Any cleaning kit for a .22 will do the trick if you don't already have one. It all depends on which chemicals you prefer and how much odor you are willing to put up with I happen use M-Pro 7 stuff for my collection as there's no odor and it does a decent job. However anything from a big-box store will work too and not set you back much. Heck, you can even pick up more ammo while you're there.

Killshot, I too, shoot with my left and also know what you are talking about the tip of your thumb being sore. It just doesn't close the slide properly for lefties. Called customer service and the slide "should" close smoothly but it doesn't. I went back to the store and tried other MP22 and still the same problem with an empty mag. But after going to the range for the first time, it closes nicely with live rounds (even snap caps) in the mag. Good luck with it.

1. That question has alraedy been answered
2. Ditto
3. You need a magazine loader. A Baby UpLula is an expensive way. I use the mag loader that came with my Walther Colt 1911-22 which has nearly identical magazines. The Walther P22 has a very similar magazine as well. All 3 guns are made in the same factory. If I were to buy one, it would be this one. P22 Magazine Loader | Brass Stacker
4. Yes you can, but you might want some support for this one. It would be very easy to gouge the aluminum slide trying to press in a steel sight.
5. Don't know
6. When some company comes out with a sight mount for the gun, then you can.
7. Depends on how good a shot you are
8. On the 2" side, Pine or Spruce, probably. Oak or Maple, prolly not. On the 4" side prolly not on any. Lengthwise......good luck!

Regarding S&W sending you FREE rear dot sights for my new M&P 22 to match my M&P 9mm, the answer I received from their customer service was "No." They will not send me sights and said due to different manufacturers of the 9mm and the .22, that they do not fit and have a different base. Can anyone let me know what I should do next? They weren't very nice about it....

Regarding my last quote, I just received another message from S&W Customer Service further stating that S&W will not send me a rear dot site for my M&P 22 because quote: "Unfortunately, after testing the steel sights ruin the aluminum slide. So we do not send out the M&P sights for the .22" Guess I'll go to my local gun dealer and see what they have available.

You need to clean it before shooting it the first time because, they get "greased/oiled" at the factory for storage and may sit for who knows how long in who knows what kind of storage (hot/cold/damp/dry) while being shipped from the factory. Container ships take awhile getting here, container can sit for who knows how long waiting for an import inspection, then sit at a distribuer for how long, same for the dealer, then to the local gun shop. That "made for grease" coating they get from the factory helps keep them from rusting between there and "our" gun safes. Sooo, all that storage greese/lube needs to be cleaned off the gun inside and out and out of the barrel before you put any rounds safely down range. If the barrell has a heavier grease/oil inside, that can/will cause higher bore presure and could be fatal to the gun, shooter or any bystanders.

Besides,it also lets you inspect the gun for any problems. Not to mention getting more familiar with your weapon BEFORE you fire it.

The Manufacture (hopefully),handles the Quality Control. You/Me/Everyone buying, WE are actually our own Dealer/Owner Prep.

1. You can buy them on the S&W website through their store. You can buy the 10 round or 12 round magazine.
2. $32 for either 10 rd or 12 rd
3. What have you been doing to it?
4. I just bought my M&P 22 so I don't know that one yet. I don't have a problem with the sights that came with the gun so they will stay on for now.
5. I prefer a Bianchi Shadow pancake belt holster. I use one for my carry gun (Ruger SP101) and with your shirt untucked or with a jacket on you wouldn't know I was carrying.
6. I don't know, never used one.
7. How well can you shoot?
8. I never shot a 2x4 with a handgun chambered for a 22lr. It does a good job on squirrels, rabbits, tin cans, paper, etc....

I just bought my M&P22 and have only shot it once. Put about 300 rounds through it today and it handled well. I put CCI target loads, Remington's Cyclone high velocity loads, American Eagles high velocity loads, and some Mexican brand (Aguila's I think) through it today. It didn't like the Mexican stuff but shot everything else without a hitch. Accuracy was good nothing spectacular. I have a Ruger Mark III target that I've had for several years and it is a tack driver. I don't think the M&P22 can do what the Ruger does but it is a fun gun and will serve the purpose that I bought it for (for a trail gun to take when I go fishing or hiking).
