Thumbs up Your favorite gun cleaning gear? What do you use?

Hey guys, I'm looking to get some gun cleaning tools, cleaner, oil and lubricant.

There are many, and I don't have much experience except using Hoppe's...let's see what everyone uses are far as Kits and cleaning oil and/or lubricants.

My standard cleaning kit includes a Winchester 32-piece Deluxe gun cleaning kit with Hoppes Elite gun cleaner, Break Free CLP, Miltec 1 lube and Montana X-treme Gun Grease. Plus an armorers mat with magnetic corners. But I also have a ton of odds and ends stuff I use depending on the gun. Bought a large tackle box to hold it but I am running out of space and will probably need to buy a second one.

We used CLP on M16A1 and M16A2 rifles, and no other cleaners or lubricants. You could get your rifle clean enough to pass inspection with this stuff, and they would then run flawlessly until you either put about 10 30 round mags through them, or drug them through sand, silt, or mud. Good enough for me. CLP is all you need. Used toothbrushes. Q-Tips. Some patches, or paper towels in a pinch. A cleaning rod with a bore brush, maybe a swab, and some sort of eyelet to hold a patch. This stuff is available anywhere from VileMart to Big 5 to your LGS.

I generally can take care of most of my cleaning needs with a some CLP and a standard gun cleaning kit that I picked up at the local gander mtn.

On a side note, I also keep some renaissance wax handy for the very special ladies

Awesome, thanks for the gun cleaning load out =]

I've seen a lot of people using Break Free. Have you used Ballistol?

I also planned on holding all of it in a tackle box.

I'm a big fan of Gun Slick Pro products. I love the Gun-Flush for those quick easy cleans. A little Ultra-Klenz down the barrel and some Ultra-Lube on those places that need it and I'm good to go.

On my AR platforms and my Glocks I use M PRO 7 LPX gun oil and M PRO 7 solvent. Plus I use boresnakes...weapons run like raped apes. I just got an M&P9 and will use this same setup for it as well.

I clean my guns regularly, usually every time they've been fired, regardless of how many rounds. (Just part of shooting for me and I actually enjoy it.) I find Breakfree CLP works as advertised to clean, lubricate and protect. It may be the case that a different/(better?) lube may be preferred if you're going to fire many hundreds or even thousands of rounds between cleanings? In my opinion it's quite likely CLP is still good enough for this level of usage. It's rare for me to fire more than a few hundred rounds between cleanings so I've not needed anything other than CLP.

I of course use a cleaning rod with standard patches for the bore and a bore brush when needed. (I find patches are usually enough when using jacketed ammo.) I cut old t-shirts into 4" or 6" squares and use one or two of these mini-rags for a thorough cleaning and wipe-down and then just throw them out. I keep a couple old toothbrushes in the kit but cleaning this frequently I rarely need to "scrub" anything.

I have gathered different lubes, cleaners, rags, etc over the years and still have most of it in my kit but find myself using mainly - usually only, CLP.

I will stand by CLP when it comes to cleaning guns. I have the bottle of liquid as well as the spray can for any use and application. You will hear that Breakfree CLP is not milspec but it will do everything as advertised. (Cleaner, Lubricant, and protectant).

A bore brush and patches work but the easiest way to clean a barrel is with a bore snake. Spray some CLP over the brisstles and on the back tip. Run it through twice and it will clean and polish the barrel.

The slide and anyother part that needs cleaning takes a tooth brush.

Finish it off with a qtip, lubricated anything that will have metal on metal contact and your done.

Thanks so much guys for the advice and what to use. So far, it seems that pretty much everyone uses the same techniques. I might just try all of them out that people have posted in here and see which one I prefer.

I enjoy cleaning guns so I look forward to it.

My reply is centered primarily around owning a polymer framed gun. Here are my cleaning supplies:

1) A small half inch wide masking tape roll (For resting my pstol on)
2) 4 or 5 Paper towels (to place dirty and then clean parts on)
3) Q-Tips (for cleaning hard to reach places and oiling rails)
4) Pistol Bore Brush
5) Break Free CLP For Cleaning and Oiling
6) Tetra Gun Cleaner and Grease (I rarely use this, but depending on the gun or rifle I may choose to use Just a cleaner instead of CLP or JUST SOME GREASE on a cleaned part instead of oiling)
7) Clean Shop Rag that does not leave behind fibers.

That is if Im at home and have all my stuff, I could get by with much less.

I have heard of people using Simple Green, I know for a fact that it is safe to use on all gun parts, but I just have not ever decided to try it out. Other than that If I had some paper towels and a bottle of break free I could still do a good cleaning job on my pistol. You really don't need much more than break free if you clean regularly (Once every few hundred rounds).

Over the years I have gathered quite a collection of oils and cleaners that are magic elixirs. Although many are probably good, the last 7 to 8 years I have used only Breakfree CLP and Ed’s Red.

I switched to Froglube. I figure if it is good for Navy Seals it is good enough for me. I don't use anything else now. I use a micro-fiber towel to wipe the gun down. Use some liqid lube on a bore snake to clean the barrel and work a small amount of paste on and in the barrel. This stuff is the best. It works great, smells good, and doesn't dry out my hands like some other cleaners. I am a convert. I will never go back to old oil based cleaner/lube.

Froglube is a brand of CLP

EDIT****

I just spent 30 minutes reading and watching videos on frog lube and I want some... This stuff looks amazing!

When cleansing a cannon, a solvent is generally utilised to make softer any copper or gun dirt residue, and an oil or wax-based preservative is directed to defend the exterior surface. Rods, decorate decorate paint paint brushes, patches and other means of scrubbing the central and exterior exterior of the cannon are furthermore essential.

Switched to frog lube and probably all I will ever use in the future. Since switching I've put about 700 rounds through my M&P 22 and 600 plus through the M&P 9 FS. No failures of any kind with either hand gun. When I break them down I blow them out good with a air compressor before cleaning and lubing. Works great.

At this time I use Break Free CLP for cleaning & lubricating. When my M&P 40C ever gets here I plan on using Froglube. My SEAL buddies are never wrong, lol.

Amazon is the best place I've found. Paid less than 12 bucks for a bottle of liquid plus jar of paste.

I used to think Ballistol was the best product out there for all your gun needs. Boy, was I wrong. Frog Lube blows Ballistol (& everything else) outta the water. It does NOT attract dirt & grime like petroleum based products & smells 10 times better. Its also made in the USA! My f/s 9 & 9C actually perform better with FL. Glad I made the switch.

Glad to see someone else that still uses the basic items that works well. I shoot a lot of lead so most of the time I use Kroil with brass brush wrapped with a strand of Chore Boy for cleaning the bore and ATF for lube. Just started using Ren Wax on the exterior due to all the positive reviews and so far have been pleased with the result but in the past I have used Johnson Wax with similar results.

I use Ballistol and M-Pro7. Between those two products I'm very happy with how they clean and protect my rifles and pistols.

Default GUN CLEANING

it's a slippery and expensive slope with diff tools, solvents, methods for different rifles/ shotguns/ pistols and how bad they are. if just starting a few coated one piece dewey rods are not bad and a decent solvent would be shooters choice. opinions vary. I've got diff solvents for lead, copper, general cleaning. and even built an electrolysis cleaner (not for everyday use). several diff brushes in all calibers some brass, some nylon and some stainless, and then there are jags....

Is renaissance wax that much better ?

At the time I could not bring myself to pay the price for it.

Maybe once I go through this can of Johnson's, but that might be awhile.
