Default To buy an M&P 22 or Ruger sr 22...help

Hi all....
I have a walther p-22. It has worked pretty good, very early unit, so maybe it shouldnt have worked at all.
But it is smallish, and sometimes has issues.
So i was thinking of getting an m&p 22.
A friend who handled and shot one say's it felt to lite, and the finish had started to wear on the slide with only a couple hundred round's through it.
Am still thinking about it though, but ruger threw me a curve ball.
They came out with the sr 22. Review's have been great so far.
I like it,not much bigger than the walther, but the grip feels better, and the reliability seem's mile's away from the walther.
Anyone compare the m&p22 with the ruger sr22?
What are you guy's thought's on this?

Thank's every one
Have a great day

I posted this thread recently about my SR22.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/...22-pistol.html

I love the pistol and take it on every range trip. In fact I just shot it about half an hour ago at lunch. It cannot completely replace my GSG 1911, but is far above it or any .22 pistol I've shot in reliability. Zero malfunctions of any kind so far with Fed Bulk and Mini Mags.

Sorry, I don't have an M&P 22 to make the direct comparison you want though. Based on what I've read and handling one in a store, I have no desire to buy one.

Default m&p22

Thank's Dragon88.
Oop's, i forgot about the Sig 1911-22, which i like too.
So i guess i wanted to compare the M&P-22 to the Ruger sr-22, and the Sig 1911-22.
I am leaning toward's a full size dedicated combat style 22 pistol.
Thats what i need help with

My personal opinion is that the M&P is a better choice if you are looking for a trainer. My M&P has a feel much like my XDM 9mm. A few ounces lighter but with similar balance and grip size.

I recently handled a P22 and feel that it is too light for my use. The SR22 is a little heavier though.

By the way, I have just shy of 2000 rds through my M&P with zero issues. I do have the impression that the bluing is not up to the standard of my XDM but that is just a feeling, I don't have any wear marks on the M&P.

Both the M&P and SR were on my need list. The M&P is no longer on my need list. Got my hands on one at a gunshow and wasn't impressed enough with it, especially for the price. My thoughts on that plastic thumb safety weren't pleasant, it's big, and it flexes.

Had the gun been made by Smith, no doubt I'd have a different opinion.

I do have two of the Sig Sauer 1911-22, one FDE and one OD. They are absolute fun to shoot. The only thing I've noticed that you have to watch out for is over loading the magazine. They are advertised as 10 round, but will hold 11. If I load 11, I always had and issue with the next round chambering. Only loading 10, never and issue. This is with Federal bulk 550 and CCI Blazers.

The SR22 is still on my need list, and from what I've read, it'll stay there until I buy one.

I'd also feel different about the M&P even though not made in house, if it were a hundred bucks cheaper.

same feeling that I have...
I had the chance with the SR22 and quit impress with everything it has to offer as well it function flawlessly plus the inviting price point over Sig mosquito and the Walter P22

I haven't had the chance to get my hands on the MP22 so I'm still on the fence with this one but not made in house & price point is making me gravitate around the SR22 and put off the MP22 unless one so happens to falls from the sky... only thing it has going for it is a full size in a 22 caliber

I have an SR22 and love it. Its a great little plinker.
I wouldnt hesitate to pick one up, especially if you like the Walther, which I have as well. The Ruger is far preferable IMO. I wouldnt even consider a Walther at this point.

The only S&W 22 that I would keep over my SR22 is my 422. Love that gun! In fact they are similar in the sense that they are both quite light, and a I tend to prefer a light, short barreled 22.

Happy hunting!

I chose the M&P22 and couldn't be happier. After checking out the Ruger SR22 and Walther P22 I started wondering if I really wanted such a small framed gun. After shooting them I was certain that I didn't. I wanted something that filled my hand and felt sturdy and substantial. My M&P22 has been nothing but a rock star; accurate, reliable and a whole lot of fun. Based on my experience, I would highly recommend you try before you buy.

M&P22. It's a full size gun unlike the SR22 and P22. Mine has been perfectly reliable with any ammo, it's very accurate, and comes from the factory with a threaded barrel. For me it was a no brainer because I have an M&P pistol. The Ruger does look nice but I've heard it's also made by Uramex(same as P22 and M&P22), I could be wrong on that account.

Buy both, I own both... they are both nice....

I would give the edge to Ruger on gun sights.

I have an M&P 22 and think it is great. Its almost 100% reliable with cheap bulk pack ammo. I think if you want a full sized 22 you would not be disappointed in the M&P. The Ruger is on my short list also but some say I have WAY too many .22s.... I will be waiting for a threaded barrel option though. One thing I see as an advantage on the Ruger vs the S&W is the exposed hammer and double strike capability. A not well known option you should check out is the Bersa Thunder 22/Firestorm FS22. Although its my cheapest new gun purchase at $240, it remains my favorite 22 pistol. They are DA/SA like the Ruger, look good, all metal construction (aluminum frame, steel slide) still light weight, and reliable with most bulk pack ammo. And most holsters/accessories for the Bersa Thunder 380 also work for the 22.

I went to my LGS today with my brother in law. We looked at ever 22 in the place. He ended up getting the Sig Mosquito, its a nice gun. I looked at the Walther P-22, Sig Mosquito, Sig 1911-22, S&W M&P22, Ruger Mark III, Ruger 22/45 and the Colt 1911 Rail Gun 22. I've found plus's and minus's with all of them, but I think my next 22LR hand gun will be either a Mark III or a 22/45

I really wish you hadn't said good things about that Bersa 22. I love the 380, and I don't own one. A friend does and it's the most accurate pistol for me, that I've ever shot. I've looked that the Bersa's at the gun show and really have no idea why I haven't bought one yet, they are inexpensive and I have never heard a single person have a bad thing to say about them.

And really, can you ever have too many 22's??

That's a nice set up cactus-jack.
Was also thinking about the Sig. 1911-22.

I'm sure you may know this, but if you don't, the M&P22 is manufactured by Walther.

I have looked at both, and they are very fine guns to be sure. I would choose the M&P22 as I already have the M&P9 and this would be a cheap alternative on the ammo side of things. There seems to be no issues I have ran across while researching the M&P that would cause me to not buy it. What is holding things up is the lack of funds at the moment. Of course, all donations accepted for this awesome in depth review.

if you really want a depenable and accurate 22 get the ruger mk111 you will be very happy with it. i have the m&p 22 and it is a good trainer for someone that has it's bigger brother, but i am not impressed with it's accuracy (3''-4'' at 25yds)and reliablity(dose not like the cheaper ammo) my ruger will shoot groups half that and eat anything i feed it.....

I vote for the M&P .22. I am at about 700 rounds on mine, absolutely a ball to shoot and zero problems. I also have a Sig 1911-22, but prefer the feel of the M&P (yeah, I know... heresy to the 1911 lovers!).

I liked the M&P .22 so well I picked up a full sized 9, and I am looking at others... I think it got me hooked.

My impression of the SR22 wasn't very good... double action felt like a Keltec... safety moves in the wrong direction if you are used to the 1911... and a little too small. Didn't actually fire one.

Oh brother... Was hoping this thread would help me out. Not yet. I carry an M&P 9c and would like a .22 for cheap training and plinking. Have handled both in question, but still can't decide. Still leaning towards the SR 22, due to the size comparison of my M&P 9c. Thoughts anyone?

Its pretty odd that almost everyone who says don't get the M&P doesn't even have one.And most haven't even shot one.

I have a walther, but its kinda small for what i want.
The ruger sr-22 is on my list, but is about the same size as the walther.
So now i'm thinking or leaning toward's the m&p-22 or the sig 1911-22.

I didn't say don't get one, but I don't have one. I looked at one and gave my reason for why I no longer want one.

I headed out to buy an M&P 22 last month, but wad not overwhelmed by it, given the price. So I decided to get a River mk III target competition model, since I had wanted one since I was a kid (but it was a mk II back then). I can't say I was disappointed at all with the Ruger, but I might just as well have liked the M&P, which would be a great trainer.

I just bought the Beretta Neos from Bud's for $214 and have already put 600 rounds through it flawlessly.

Default m&p-22

As far as a combat style 22 pistol goes, i think the M&P get's it.
Well ok, so does the Sig. 1911-22.
Think it's going to be the M&P -22.
And then i will get the Sig-Gsg 1911-22,cause i like it too.
Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saw the M&P22 at a gun show yesterday, price was getting better, found as low as 345.00. Some places had them as high as 435.00, while most were 375-379.00.

Looked at several GSG 1911-22, priced in the 335-345 range.

Found the SR22 for as low as 289.00, I would have bought it, but it was being held for someone else and it was the last one they had...

I agree the M&P is a good training pistol especially if you have a M&P it gives you the same feel and familiarity. I always like the Ruger MKII and III but the grip is different compared to my other guns.

I shot both the Ruger and the M&P. For me, the M&P fit my hand better and just "felt" natural. In the end, I did purchase the M&P.

But beware: the M&P 22LR is the "gateway gun" to a serious S&W addiction. I bought mine about 5 weeks ago and now find myself the proud owner of a 3-day old M&P 9FS.
Just saying...

That Ruger Mk III is a fine quality, very sweet looking and shooting gun--but have you tried breaking it down yet? Nicely ask your LGS dealer to demonstrate how to take it down for cleaning. It's comparatively very difficult, in fact it's easy to scratch the gun while doing so. I wouldn't recommend it as a first gun for that reason, although if you're just shooting for target practice, it's hard to beat that gun for the money.

It's also so reliable, it seldom needs a complete break down for cleaning. They are on the tedious side to take down, but once you know how, it's like anything else. That 22/45 MkIII is a great pistol!

Like all the ruger 22's mk's, taking it apart is no big deal.
Putting it back together sometimes can be a challenge.
But it is a great gun. Have several variation's.
But i was looking for, at least in my case a combat style 22 pistol. The M&P seem's to fit the bill.
I think i have ruled out the Sig or the GSG. Still a little too much going on with those gun's.
But i will get a 22 conversion kit for one of my 1911's.

I just purchased my M&P22 last weekend and couldn't be happier!! Before I purchased this gun, I rented an M&P9 and just loved it, but with the price of ammo, I decided to get the 22. I know that I'll eventually get the M&P9, but for now, it's the 22.

I did a lot of research on other .22 semi auto's before I made my decision. One of the others that I was looking at was the SIG Mosquito. This gun also felt pretty good in my hand, but after researching this gun, it was clear that the M&P22 was a more reliable gun. I'm sure there are many people that have the SIG and love it, but for me, I chose the M&P.

Many say that the SR22 is a P22 killer.

Search the Ruger forums and youtube for SR22 problems and you'll find that the barrel screw can come loose and batter the **** out of the aluminum insert in the frame. Also, there are reports that the plastic takedown lever assembly which also acts as the slide buffer can break. Of course, Ruger's warranty is what it is. Meaning there is no warranty. At Ruger's disgression they either fix your problem or not. Right now with the SR22 being so new, they're inclined to fix SR22 problems including issuing a free return label.

Read the Walther forums and you'll see high round P22s breaking slides, which would indicate poor buffering. This would include newer P22s as well. Of course, the Walthers only have a 1 year warranty and shipping is on you. On the other hand, folks have reported great success going through S&W's service number for Walther issues and having free service out of warranty and receiving free return shipping. So, if you have a problem with a Walther, don't go through Walther, go through S&W.

The SIG Mosquito doesn't seem to have any reliability issues. However, some owners report the Mosquito as jam-o-matics. It would appear that given the proper dose of CCI Minimags (200 or more rounds) and plenty of lubrication that eventually the Mosquito will then fire cheap bulk pack Federal ammo of the WalMart variety. The Mosquito does come with 2 recoil springs, one for HV stuff and the other for MV stuff. I don't know what factor this plays in the jam-o-matic problem. The SIG warranty is the same as Rugers. No warranty, only a claim of customer satisfaction which doesn't make me feel real good.

As far as the M&P22 (made by Walther) is concerned, it's also so new and kinda rare that there doesn't seem much negative feedback on the web about it. I have one on the way. Of course, with the M&P22 you'll get the full 1 year S&W warranty followed by the full Free Lifetime Service Policy.

I will say this. I have a Walther made Colt 1911 22lr and it's top notch. In fact, I bought 2 and gave one to the grandson. We've put thousands of rounds through them with only a few bobbles. All shots have been Federal bulk pack 550 36 grain HP from Walmart. I had a about 10 FTE in the first 200 rounds and the grandson had a few failure to go completely into battery in the the first 100 rounds. Since then, they've been flawless.

It's rather ironic that the Walther made Colts and S&Ws seem to be so good while their own Walther branded P22 gets such negative feedback. Of course the Colts and S&Ws are brand news designs and the P22 design is many years old. On the other hand, maybe some of these same problems will occur on the Colts and S&Ws years down the road. Keep in mind S&Ws written commitment to customer service.

A point. The SR22 & P22 are in the 17oz weight range and the M&P22 & Mosquito are in the 24+oz weight range and are intended as trainers for their respective centerfire counterparts, although they are fine guns in their own right.

The Sig 1911-22, which I admit I done little research seems to be made by GSG. The company propaganda seems to couch the same specification "metal frame", meaning, I guess it's not made out of provalone cheese, or aluminum or steel. Or rather is the same as the Walther Made Colts or GSG or Chiappa or Puma and is some kinda zinc alloy. Some folks derogatorily refer to this as "pot" metal. While strictly speaking the term applies, I don't believe it's appropriate in this case because the specific zinc allow seems to be far better than your average window crank. Of course, they use the zinc alloy frame to increse weight to, sort of, approximate the 1911 weight as opposed to aluminum which wouldn't be even close. My understanding is that there is no cost savings using zinc alloy as opposed to aluminum alloy. Also, the weight still isn't here. My Walther Colt still weight less than a genuine Colt LW Commander. But, I enjoy shooting it a great deal.

BTW, any of these guns can be found (mostly on Gunbroker) for between $300-$350. Shop carefully. I see alot of retailer online and LGS charging near or full MSRP for these guns. Which naturally is $100+ more than careful shoping.

The Ruger MkIII. What can be said. Any model in the same price range as the above mentioned models will be blued with fixed sights. I don't like 'em cause they're too heavy, even the 22/45. The same can be said about the Browning Buck Marks. The MkIII and the Buck Marks are fine pistols and owners rave about 'em, but they're too costly & heavy for specific models that approximate the above mentioned tactical style models.

I guess it's one of those things you just have to experience. On paper it's so logical and easy, in real life it's a bear. For one thing, on metal framed MKxx? the barrel/receiver assembly is a very tight fit to the grip frame requiring great force to get on. Second, you have to insert the hinged pin in just the right fashion to the bolt extension all while juggling the hammer strut into the correct position. That portion requires skill of an acrobat and magician combined in one. And then you find out you're not aligned with the hole in the top of receiver. It is something I do not enjoy and avoid it like the plague. That's why I sold my MkII.

My comment was to the highlighted portion of the quoted text, regarding the Sig/GSG 1911-22, of which I have two, no issues, thought I was missing out on something I shouldn't be. It was a bit tongue in cheek, and am glad I don't have any issues to date.

I would agree.
I have an assortment of 22 pistols and the Ruger Mark is generally the most accurate. Currently I have a 5.5 Hunter Talo version MK3 which I love.
A Buckmark is also a good choice for the same reason. Great trigger and excellent accuracy.

But, for hiking in the woods and plinking I like the SR22 or similar.

I went with the Ruger SR22 and have had no issues. It feeds everything I put in it. It has a steel barrel instead of pot metal like the others.

There are! I have read many of them. The review I was referring to was my own here, with tongue in cheek of course. I have since purchased the M&P22 and love it. thanks

Do like I did. Buy one of each! I bought both of mine used, but you would swear they were new. Actually the SR22 still hasn't been shot, I'm waiting for the threaded barrel to become available. I've already posted pics of my M&P, but oh well, here it is again!

Oh, did I mention I also have a P22??

Geez, I better be careful. The next thing you know I'll be a .22 pistol collector!
