Default FSS Trigger Kit W/ Comp springs

Just posting up a quick review of the FSS kit, I know it's been posted on here a bunch of times as I read all of them before purchasing. I don't believe however that there was anyone who mixed it with the comp springs and measured it for anyone who wanted to know.

First, I'm not anywhere close to a gunsmith. Two months ago I paid $75 to have a trigger installed in my XD because I was too nervous to go near a sear block and start losing springs.

Luckily my father got an M&P 45 when he retired and it had the MA trigger which was heavier than my friend's 12lb gauge would go and caused me to almost shoot my chrono. (it really is god awful). All my fears go away when I work on someone elses stuff and he almost never shoots, so I would've had plenty of time to fix any mistakes.

First I ordered the competition spring kit, I replaced his trigger return spring, sear spring and polished all of the internals with a dremel and some flitz. (If you go slow you will not lose a spring, they don't just go flying like I had imagined) and a good set of punches helps. You'll use the 1/8th for pretty much all the pins.

This made such a huge difference, that I fell in love with this stupid gun. Two days later I sold my XD and traded a 9mm for my own M&P 45 (with the non MA trigger). The trigger on my father's was now lighter but it still had a really hard break, so the pretravel was great, but the breaking point still needed extra force. I like it to be consistent. So I ordered the FSS kit for mine. As a side note, I see tons of people talking about the small and large sear springs and that the large sear springs were only in guns made in late 2010 and on. This is not true, my fathers from early feb 2010 has the large and my gun from feb 2009 has a large spring. They both measure somewhere near .120 inchs while the small measures closer to .060 maybe it's a 45 thing and the dates I always read about are for the 40's and smaller.

Install of the FSS was completely simple, Apex has a 20 minute video on youtube which walks you through every step. I can't even offer any pointers as you really don't need any, it just drops in. The only little thing you might run into is the trigger bar loop. (This is easy to spot, it's a loop and it lifts up the sear which releases the striker) I've read that this needs to be opened up on some guns because the installer was getting a "dead trigger" aka, pull the trigger and no bang. Mine was actually the oposite. My loop was too big so the sear was opening up too soon and the trigger bar was stopping before it could hit the plunger on the slide. I closed it up in unmeasurable amount with needle nose pliers and it came out perfect. I'm sure I could've figured out a way to measure it, but literally just squeeze a tiny bit refit and try. even if you have to reassemble it 10 times and keep trying. It should only take 15 minutes.

I also decided that there was no point in having the competition trigger return spring in my father's gun if he still needed a 5 pound pull at the end to set it off. So I put the Non MA trigger spring in his and put the competition spring in mine. Now his is consistent and mine is perfect. I measured my pull at 2.6lbs and trigger sits 5mm from the point of contact with the rear of the trigger guard and breaks at 1.5mm from the point of contact. My father's gun's trigger is 15mm from the point of contact and has to travel 13mm before it breaks. I didn't measure his new pull but I'm guessing it to be around 7pounds, it should be the same as what most of you guys have stock.

So in the end I have an install that took 30 minutes, took my pull down to 2.6 pounds and reduced my pretravel by almost 9mm's. And the reset is still non existent and not audible, but seeing how short it is... I don't care. My first time out I setup a dot drill with 2 inch dots at 20 ft away and put 4 out of 5 shots into almost the same hole. It looked like a 3 leafed clover, the 5th I threw because I was so excited. I now have about 1000 rounds with this setup and it has been 100% reliable.

If you're on the fence about this or nervous. Don't be afraid to learn your gun, pickup 1/8th and some smaller punches and maybe some pliers. (a mallet and vice help out as well with the rear sight removal)
