Question Would you trust a Storm Lake 357 barrel in your compact 40?

I just installed mine and the fit is perfect with little tolerance and I feel confident that after looking at the barrel and the perfect ease of install using the same recoil spring assembly that it is now a 357 sig and not a 40 cal.

Before I take her to the range what should I expect or be careful of?

I am so happy to get this barrel even though I paid twice the factory price(Smith & Wesson) just to get one!

Why was it necessary to pay twice the factory cost?

Midway has the S&W barrels back in stock for $78 plus shipping. Nothing against Storm Lake but since the factory barrels are back in stock I can't see paying twice the price for a SL barrel. Especially since the factory barrels are going to be a perfect drop in fit. I wouldn't wait too long though as they seem to go out of stock quickly and it could be a while before more come in.

Because that is what Storm Lake charges for their barrels and Smith & Wesson has no barrels at this time!

Too bad Midway didn't have them in yet when you were in the market. The factory barrels are cheaper but I can see how somebody might not want to wait 4 months. That's 4 months of fun a guy could be missing out on.

If I actually like the 357 like I think I will I will now be able to wait for an S&W factory barrel I started to shoot mine this afternoon but after getting stuck in bad traffic on the way home I just wanted to get home and into air conditioning.

After loading my magazine with 357 SIG 125 Winchester Jacketed hollow points I racked the slide and easily chambered a round and then added another round to the magazine, so so far the barrel is doing it's job and I am pleased with the product!

I bought my MP40 right after they came out (I think) in July of 2006. As soon as I heard about the 357 Sig barrel I put in a back order at Midway. S & W didn't have the barrels then either, for some reason. I finally gave up and canceled my order from Midway.
They eventually did get them in but I was off in another direction by then. I soon bought a MP9 compact and then a MP9 Pro. I have bought several pistols, rifles and a shotgun since then. Maybe now I will try again to get the 357 barrel. I can't imagine why S & W doesn't stock up on their own brand.
And, by the way, I have seldom had problems with any of my M & P's and no problems, ever, with my 40 caliber with many rounds through it. Great guns!

Why is the factory always low on stock? Is there a problem with these barrels?

I just got my S&W 357 sig barrel from Midway last week for $78 plus shipping and it was a drop install on my 40 fs. Works great shoots great. No issues.
i also got the 9mm barrel and 9mm mags and it works just as good as well. So I now have 3 guns in one. Love it.

Unbelieveable.... guy asks for thoughts on using his new 357 sig barrel and all you guys have to talk about is what he paid for his barrel...

Ok Houdini, I'm with you, I bought ANOTHER Storm\Lake barrel for my 40c when I bought it last year. Difference being I bought the S\L ported 357 sig barrel. I didn't like it at 1st, it just seemed to be way to snappy... I felt like I couldn't control the muzzle enough to be effective. But it sure was an attention getter at the range, the blast and the muzzle flames were incredible. So I parked it in my range bag while I licked my wounds and tried to decide what to do with it and how to maybe sell it.... Fast forward to about a month ago, I had some ammo left and decided to shooot up the box before making my next move... Wawho!! I love it now, I shot it great, hit the target POA. Felt like I am in control of my muzzle with it and now throw the barrel in when I have ammo for it. I buy a couple of boxes now everytime I can, but tend to shoot em all up when I hit the range. Last time out, I had no more ammo so before I left the range, I put my 40c barrel back in and loaded up my mags with 40's.. till I could get somemore ammo..

I also have the Storm\Lake 9mm conversion barrel for my M&P40fs, love that one too but don't carry it anymore since I put in the FSS kit from APEX. For those that want to know the diff between a S&W and S\L barrel.....

I just went to MidwayUSA's site. They are now asking $139.99 for the Storm Lake barrel. Is there another brand for $78.00?

Who has the S & W stock replacemment? I went to the S & W site but as usual they don't seem to know they exist. The only pistol barrels they had were S & W 22A and model 41 barrel replacements.
For the price they are asking for the 22A barrel I could just buy another 22A (I already have one) new for just a few dollars more.

Thank's. When I tried Midway I probably just asked for Storm Lake and that's the only barrel I pulled up.That's a very good price, I'll be ordering one next week.

No, it doesn't look like they have any factory barrels listed for the .357sig in a compact. They only show the Storm Lake "Semi drop in" barrels.

I can only guess that "semi drop in" means it might not fit right out of the box. That's SL's description, not mine. Looks like it would be a lot cheaper to buy a .357sig pistol and convert to .40 rather than the other way around.

Ordered a SL from Midway several weeks ago, back ordered. Checked on back order and it was delayed till 4/2/12. Got discussed and called Smith and they were out of stock three weeks so I back ordered a 40 to 9 mm. Called Midway to cancel my order and they said it shipped yesterday.

They are pushing the job I am on so I have to work tomorrow and even though I will be carrying it with me I might not feel like a range trip but Sunday is different and I will shoot about 150 rounds!

I had a Storm Lake 357 Sig barrel in my 40 C for while. Realy liked it. Worked perfectly. Accurate as heck too.

Recoil was not an issue either.

The Storm Lake barrel is better than a factory barrel if you want to pay the price.

I went to the range today at my favorite gun store (Gun&Leather, Hendersonville, TN) and went to one of the clerks and showed him the gun with the barrel and he took the magazine out and racked the slide and noticed that the slide was getting stuck open without an empty mag and said that it wasn't milled right so I took the Storm Lake barrel out and put in my .40 barrel and bought a couple of boxes of .40 cal FMJ and went to the range disappointed that I was gonna have to return my barrel to get one that fit and cycled properly.

I was dead on at 18' and 28' so since I also had my new M&P45 I shot it as well my first few shots were low but the sights are a little different than those on my .40 and M&P9mmFS, but with a few more rounds I was pretty much hitting right where I wanted to hit so all in all it turned out to be a good day, only bad part is I got 50 hollow points and 250 FMJ's that I can not shoot till I get my .357 barrel corrected!

The Storm Lake barrels may be a better barrel but I have heard a lot of complaints about them not being machined properly and having to be returned for exchange. Maybe that's why Storm Lake calls their barrels "semi drop in". At least they are willing to exchange them though. It's too bad that for some reason there is not an S&W barrel for the .357 compact.

Well the good thing is that I still have all that 357 SIG ammunition and got the 250 rounds of Speer Lawman 125 grain FMJ's for $107 counting tax and shipping!

Are you saying, you had the barrel in and when you racked it, the slide would not go into battery or was tight, or just flat out hung up? In other words, could you have closed it ? It sounded like you had the barrel installed before you got to the range..

I have a Storm Lake barrel in my G35 and Sig P220 .45. Both barrels are threaded for suppressor hosts. Both barrels have worked flawlessly from day one. I was fortunate to buy my M&P 357c with a factory .40 barrel also. Both calibers use the same mags.

Yes the barrel was installed before I went to the range and I had 5 magazines full of .357SIG FMJ just not one chambered for a total of 65 shots plus the remainder of a second 50 box of FMJ's.

I suppose I could have pushed the slide forward into battery but was concerned about this harming my slide so that is why I put the .40 barrel back in. When I rack the slide it should easily go into battery and if not I get concerned, wouldn't you?

No problem, your call, you are there, I'm not. I am a mechanic by trade and a tinkerer by nature. I play with and mod my guns, I may have played with it and checked it out closer to see what up. It seems to me, if you had it in before going to the range, it closed. May have been just a little break in and you'd have it a good functioning tight piece, which is what we are looking for. I have 2 of the S\L barrels, they are tight but have functioned flawlessly for me. It just seemed as though it worked for you until you got to the range and someone else worked it..

You would be correct except for the complaining. If you buy a semi drop in part, and sometimes even a drop in part, fitting may be required.

Does anyone ever have any extraction problems with their converted barrels?

With 350 rounds of 9mm through my M&P40 with a 9mm barrel I have not had one single extraction problem.

both of my S\L barrel have been almost flawless. I say almost because I seem to remember like one or 2 hiccups after maybe a couple hundred rounds on the 9 conversion barrel. Never happened again so I didn't give it a second thought. I'll take my barrels to war

Default Storm Lake barrel in a 40 S&W frame

Finally fired my 9 in a 40 and there was no hiccups, just smooth.
I then fired a S&W threaded 9 barrel and the group was tighter, again no problems. Finally I fired my new 40S&W V Tech and the groups were even tighter! I can't wait to try the threaded 9 barrel in the V Tech. Sorry no photos, don't know how! I have also ordered a S&W barrel 4.5 inch. Back ordered!

Before I take her to the range what should I expect or be careful of?

I am so happy to get this barrel even though I paid twice the factory price(Smith & Wesson) just to get one!
Although I don't have one installed in a S&W I can speak about the quality of the Storm Lake barrel. I have them installed in all of my Glocks and have put over 20,000 through one in my Glock 35 (.40 Cal). No problesm with Fit accuracy ETC. I am a fan of the Storm Lake barrel

Dirtman, they're still listed but they're out of stock. They sell pretty quickly. My guess is that a lot of guys like the idea of being able to do a conversion so cheaply. When they come up you gotta jump on 'em ASAP.

Whatchu talkin about Leroy.... there's plenty of S\L barrels there. I'm almost tempted to buy one just for fun...

Yeah, the SL barrels seem to stay in stock a lot longer than the Smith barrels which are half the price.

Default Update on Storm Lake barrel

I decided to just clean my gun after a range visit and decided to go ahead and put the Storm Lake barrel in the .357SIG and try it again, it might have been an error or in reassembly at the gun store that caused the slide to get stuck with the barrel, of course this time I took my time and cleaned the gun as well as lubed the barrel and put it back together and will go shoot it tomorrow, after posting this update I am in the process of loading all my mags with 357SIG (5 of them two 10 rounders and 3 15 rounders) I guess I'll shoot up the first 100 rounds pretty quickly this way.

I am now satisfied that this new barrel will work as expected and give me yet another caliber and actually even a new weapon that fires from one of my M&P might have to buy mare mags is the only problem to avoid confusion if I decide to change barrels but that is another topic!
