Default The Shield and other S&W news

It's a single stack 9mm or .40, your choice. In other news, S&W is reportedly(hearsay) starting a 3rd Shift to keep up with demand.

It may be hard to resist and I don't really like striker fired guns.

It may be a nice pistol, but that's a terrible name.

I don't doubt production at S&W is running full steam.
They're putting out some hot ticket items right now.My brother told me that Ruger has temporarily suspended new orders, too.
Looks like everyone is trying to get "ready" for whatever may be believed to be coming. Gun sales seem to be at an all time high.
People have always wanted a single stack Glock nine,so looks like S&W one upped them. The whole Glock saga of late has disgusted me. I'm keeping my old 2nd gens.,but very seriously doubt I'll ever buy another one.
Sorry,if I got off topic, here.Incidentally,I might like having a Shield provided it had a flat baseplate to make it more pocketable.

I"m one of the few people going through this "experience" myself. I've had Springfields and Rugers that always ran without problems. I finally broke down and bought a Gen 4 19....nothing but problems despite all the reliability they've had. I'm even considering selling/trading it to get a full sized M&P 40 lately.

May be a good idea.I bought a 3rd Gen 19 at steal. It had the dipped extractor and after 450 rounds I had FTE's galore.
Life's too short to deal with garbage.I sold it to my gunsmith and warned him about the problems.I've had my 2nd gens for years and never a problem.Thousands upon thousands of rounds.

Default Shield name kinda sucks!

" I have a M&P 9mm Shield", talk about confusing?

How about "The New M&P SSC"....Single Stack Compact.

Please send one of each my way for a full review.

I agree I like your name better, but "SSC Yourself" wouldn't work with the catchy "Shield Yourself" slogan in the ad on the S&W website. Makes all the sense in the world now that we know the name of the gun.

I thought they were bringing back the 4506 in honor of Vic Mackey, the lead character on "The Shield". If they are going to make a single stack M&P, I am sure it will be a huge hit, and it will trounce Glock. People have always wanted a single stack Glock. Those baby Glocks are too fat. I don't like striker fired guns, but if they make that with a manual safety or a mag disconnect (even better if they had both features for me), I will own one.

I agree, I was wondering if he was going to point that at me. I did not take the photo, it came from a electronic sales distribution sent by Cheaper than Dirt. I copy&pasted it.

I have had enough positive dealings with them to believe the photo is to scale, whether original or not to them. I never found the site to be anything other than legit.

My primary point was here is what caliber etc it is.....

Thanks for posting the pic. Interesting little pistol. I hope they sell them without the goofy extended mag. Why make a tiny concealment pistol and then add grip length to it with an extended magazine? I like the single stack idea, wonder how many rounds it will hold. I'd like to see a side by side pic with a Glock 33.

My guess is it will be like most large company hyped guns, production will trickle out at first, have a few recalls and be a year before most LGS have them. Which is fine, you do not want an early production gun in my experience, not since they stopped being put together by gunsmiths anyway.

also sounds like the trigger is plenty smooth right from the start which is good, I have seen post about people wanting to put apex parts in them, I would like them to come from the manufacturer with a nice trigger. when you factor in the extra costs of the upgrades it changes the price point of the gun, Very happy to see S&W advancing in the market place. IMHO

Barrel: 3.1", polygonal rifling; 1 - 10 right-hand twist
Length O/A: 5.42"
Height: 4.0"
Slide Width: .90"
Weight: Pistol 14 ounces, Magazine 1.9 ounces
Grips: Textured polymer
Sights: Drift adjustable, white bar-dot combat sights
Finish: Black polymer frame, matte stainless steel slide
Magazines: 1 each: 6 rd flush floorplate & 7 rd extended grip

Every company is coming out with their version of a single stack 9mm pocket gun. Every one is larger than the Kahr PM9. In Smith's case, the Shield is .68 inches longer, .05 inches thicker, .6 inches higher, and 3.1 ounces heavier. As much as I like Smith (3913 Ladysmith, 17-4, 442 no lock, 649-3, 36 no dash) I will stick with my PM-9, smaller, lighter and goes bang every time I have pulled the trigger (approx 800 rounds).

I agree, I've got a CW-9 that is a true pocket gun, even with CT added to it....and the Kahr is less than $350.

The leaked specs where larger which I'm glad it's smaller. Really going to take a good luck at one as soon as I can. MSRP is doable and if the trigger is improved that's a big bonus. The CM9 trigger is one of the best DA triggers out there IMO.

Why the thumb safety on a DAO pistol? Don't need one on my M7P 9c,so why would one be needed on the Shield?

The local rep brought one in 9 by today....trigger is pretty decent. Probably the best feeling carry gun out there

I'll be getting one - just have to see how much of a discount at the upcoming gun show. If not then a Pro Series. Good segment for S&W to hit.

It really doesn't look that much smaller than te M&P9c
Plus the name makes me want to see if it has wings on the sides for the active girl on those heavy days

half inch smaller and 3 oz and a few rounds lighter than an M&P 9c. I dunno. May take a closer look if and when one shows up in Ma. Until then, I'm more than satisfied with my CS9.

This is what I thought also. If you already own a 9c I don't see the value. If you don't own a 9c, I could see considering it.

Looks like a cool gun...but I agree - if you own a M&Pc 9mm, or an LC9, or a PF9, or a CM9...or other single stack compacts...this is just another gun which will fill your safe.

NOT saying I will not get one...just not in a hurry. Let others figure out what is wrong with it for the first year or so...just like the Glocks and every other gun. Enjoy!

I own a LC9 and a SR9c, but I still bought a shield. I like guns, like to compare, like to shoot.

I heard S&W had 3,000 of these at press release. Those will go quick.

The LE edition will take a few months to produce and get the program set up but will include 3 mags and a discount. S&W is not taking orders for LE guns yet.

I also heard the M&P22 is being put into the LE program!

My guess is that market research told them that being the smallest wasn't necessarily the biggest concern. I think this will conceal well and also be very pleasant to shoot.

I don't know - I can see the value of the safety lock on the Shield. If Kahr hadn't made their crazy safety lock upside-down on the PM9, I would have paid the extra freight to get one with a safety.

It might be too bad the gun isn't a little smaller and lighter, but I consider the PM9 a minor handful, so this one in .40 might be a plenty to handle. Either the Shield or the Kahr are really too heavy to put in a pocket, so if they end up on the belt, the small difference in size and weight may not be a distraction. I will be interested to see one.

I was able to get my hands on one at Cabela's yesterday. They didn't have them on display but the sale guy brought one out for me to play with. The grip seems very thin, like thinner than my CM9. However, the gun was heavier, and longer. The trigger is much improved(dry fires) than the regular M&P. I was seriously tempted to buy it until I saw the price. $449! I sware that's MSRP! I'm probably going to pass on this as I don't see it as an upgrade to my CM9. I did buy a new Walther PPQ. Now that is one sweet pistol!

I bought one and think its going to be a very nice carry pistol, could be shorter in the butt for my tastes but I'm sure most of the market does not agree with me.
As for the name Shield makes it sound more like a condom than a pistol.

IIRC from what we were told on the tour, they run two 12 hour shifts, but I don't know if that's factory wide or just on the CNC machines. That's seven days a week as the workers get every other weekend off.

That was as of Thursday, but again I don't remember if that's the whole factory or just the machine shops.

I'd like to see a side by side pic with a Glock 33.
i agree about the extended pinky thing it would only be good for the range, but we need to shoot the pistol as they are .
