This is just a shot in the dark, (keep in mind that this is coming from a man who has a Mondale '84 sticker on his car) but I think the prices will stay level or drop. Many manufacturers are building single stack 9mm's, and in order to stay competitive, they will have to match the market. We know that the XDs is coming out soon, and I'm sure a 9mm will follow the 45, Beretta has the Nano and Sig's got the 938, and Glock has released the DB9 so there are a lot of competitors. I've never owned an M&P because I didn't care for the trigger...but I am seriously considering a Shield. YMMV

The on-line dealers that actually have them are selling them at list ($449). Academy Sports already has them on their website at $399, but says they aren’t yet available.
So I’m sure they will be available for just under $400. I can’t see them going much under that for awhile.
Sure, everyone has a 9, but for us .40 shooters the market is small in American made sub compact .40’s. The 40 will take a bite out of Kahr’s market.
I’ll buy a 40 sight unseen as soon as my on-line dealer gets them.

Our stores list them for 399. i want one but obviously dont want to pay more money if they are going to drop. I dont think they will drop because as already stated there are several other manufactures making single stacks glock sig xd and i dont see their price at 399. So unless other single stack 9mm go to 399 i dont see the shield dropping in price but i see it being popular and going up to 450 like many online sites have them listed for.

Diamondback makes the DB9 which is very similar "looking" to the Glock.

They will most likely sell for $399 very soon and level off at that price until the next fad sends them to the used market.
I think I'll wait to see what Bud's does with the L.E. discount. I expect around $349 at best.

My local shop had 8 of them for $419, and sold out Friday! My thinking is the price will hold for now and some scalping will happen, wait a year and see what happens then. Dale

But then again, you may not be able to wait a year. If Obama gets re-elected, there may very well be a bigger run on guns than when he was elected the first time.

I don't even want to think about that.
Not to mention, you can bet the farm there will be an even BIGGER run on ammo if he wins re-election than in 2008.

I just figure glock 26 cost 500 xd subcompact 500 sig 239 700 kahr 550. 400 sounds like a good price and i would expect it to go up to 500 like the rest of the good quality guns considering that the M&P is already so popular in the full size and compact for 500 bucks.

They will do what they need to do to be competitive. Its priced with its competition like the Beretta Nano. Interesting the disparity of MSRP on the Shield vs the regular M&P actually.
I do not see them going down much as they aren't very expensive to begin with.

The question becomes - is it worth it to you to wait for a year in order to save $20 to $40 dollars?
If that is the criteria then if you wait 10 years you may find some decent used units for $299.
Nah, that's too much. Shouldn't be more than $250 or they're scalping. (Thought I'd get that out of the way early! )

The day after the Shield was announced on the Smith website, a local dealer here in south Louisiana had five priced at $399 each. I was pleasantly surprised that S & W had waited to announce the new item until they were on their way to dealers and that the price asked was below MSRP. I was able to shoot one a few days later. I was duly impressed. --c

just bought one. 425 out the door. I love this gun because for its size the ergonomics are excellent. It feels great in my hand. To me it feels better than the LC9 the SR9 and the kel tec and kahr. Since it feels better in my hand i definately shoot it better than those other guns. Its low recoil has awesome sights and shoots like a full size gun. Awesome i recommend everyone have one if your looking for a carry gun, love the slim profile

I paid full MSRP for mine and didn't mind doing it a bit. My dealer had eight of them, and about 100 people who wanted one. I didn't expect them to come off the price a dime, so I didn't ask.
I wouldn't have either.

I think they will stay right around $400.00 +/- a few bucks. This (Shield ) is my second S&W Semi-Auto ever . Bought a S&W semi auto years ago when S&W first got into the semi-auto game , could not stand it , can't remember why ? Any way this one is damn sure a keeper. Thank you S&W.

i want the shield in 40 when its released. on my wish list. however i dont believe glock will ever make a single stack 9. i know they have the 36 in .45 and i've heard rumors of a single stack .40 in the works. but i doubt a single stack 9 will come from glock haha

If they become scarce, the price will rise in a hurry.
Right now the pricing is even, on account of S&W's foresight in making a small stockpile of sell-able guns before making the announcement.Looking past the election, no matter who wins the White House its not implausible to picture a return of the departed Federal magazine ban of the 1990s. Should such a law return the demand for single stack anything will increase exponentially, which can have a higher effect on prices.

Price will drop as soon as the next have to have subcompact 9mm comes out, which will be any minute now. With that said I will say I bought the Taurus 709 Slim, Ruger LC9 and Smith Shield in that order and the Shield is by far the best of the bunch.

The going price seems to be $399 to around $425. No reason for them to get any cheaper - too many potential buyers out there. Look at Glock - they are everywhere in every model and their prices slowly move up. IMO, I dont know how anyone could expect a better buy for the buck.

Depending on the end seller’s relationship with S&W (authorized dealer, etc.) and their sales volume, they pay S&W around $292 to $337 for each Shield (factory list price is currently $449). Many dealers purchase through a distributor and their price is higher. So it is up to the dealer to set how much profit they need to make. Unless it is a very high volume dealer, I could see $380 to $400 as the current lowest price a dealer would be willing to sell the Shield. Then add tax and fees to that figure. That would be a good price for the buyer. Many dealers are currently selling at list price, and some people have reported seeing the Shields selling for $550 and higher.
Those that have purchased a Shield for less than $380 should feel very fortunate as that dealer has low overhead and or high volume, and is able to stay in business with a very low markup. Likely makes more profit on their gunsmith fees than sales.

S&W as well as the dealers themselves know how well the Shield is selling. Its easy to look at the back orders on it, lol. Supply and Demand will always play a factor on the final price.
Look at this like Apple looks at the iPhone. Once they get you hooked, they just keep upping the prices. And in the end, you still end up buying it.

From my college days Economics 101 the price you pay for a good is where supply and demand intersect. Right now demand is greater than supply so the price is going to be higher.
My suggestion if you are not in a hurry is wait.
If Romney wins the election demand across the board for guns will drop especially those deemed on Obama hit list.

Interesting to note that Buds who most always has prices well below retail is charging full retail for the .40 Shields they have in stock

My main LGS is selling the Shield for $390 and has been since Day-1.
They usually don't drop their prices unless the manufacturer does.
You might see some dealers do a 'Teaser' for less and of course, the LEO Price (if they're doing it for the Shield) may be significantly less, but I'd be willing to speculate that just under $400, which is on par with the Ruger LC9, will be the average price once the initial Lust wears out.

My LGS owner said today they're on a waiting list and have no idea when some might come in. He said some models of other brands are also hard to find. He offered no explanation other than high demand.
Until something starts chipping away at the Shield's demand, prices won't soften.
