Sounds like you are not pulling the slide back far enough. I always pull it all the way back to load a round. This insures that it goes into battery.

No need to send your pistol to S&W. You said you can load the pistol by pulling the slide all the way back and then releasing it, correct? Well, that is the recommended way to load a round. If you want to load a round using the slide stop, that's up to you. Both work, correct?? What it sounds like you are doing is press checking. Sure, when you do that it may not got back into battery all the way, just give it a shove. No real reason to press check since there is a chamber indicator where you can see if there is a round in the chamber. Hope this helps.

Andrew, I have a s&w 9mm Shield and I am lucky to get the first five shells in the magazine. I hope the springs will loosen up. I bought me the Maglula, also known as uplula, and it works great. Using the Maglula is the only way I can get the magazine loaded.

1. Go here and your problem is solved.

2. As with any magazine-fed gun, slam the mag in. It's likely gonna take a harder slam with a smaller pistol--just the nature of the beast.

3. These guns loosen up real nice after you fire a few hundred rounds. Be patient. Everything about it will become buttery smooth in time...

I'm betting the pistol in question has been well broken in over the 26 months since there's been a post to this thread.

It is a slide STOP, not a slide RELEASE. Slingshot the slide and all will be good.

All mechanical things have a break-in period; how ya treat 'em during that period affects how the moving parts settle in to one another. I bathe all my side arms in CLP between outings. There's nothing better you can do for 'em other than shoot 'em a lot. Keeps all the moving parts playing nice together. Liberal use of CLP is about the only situation I know where liberalism is a good thing...
