Do I need a Shield?
I already have a 3rd Gen 908 and it carries very well but have been thinking about a Shield since it has had so many positive reviews. Will it give me enough over my 908 to justify the $400? I don't have any polymer pistols at this time but like the looks and feel of the M&P's I have handled.

No, "All you need is Love!" And right now, I'd love to have a Shield. There just ain't none to be had around here, yet. But when there is, LOOK OUT!!
Seriously, need has nothing to do with it. Its the sensible thing to do!
Go for it!!

I am thinking about getting one, my trouble is I've been told by S&W that we will not have a gun till June.
Yes us in MASS will not be able to get one till June and it will be the SUCKY 10Lb trigger.
Plus I'm thinking I want the 40.
So now I have another $200 to $300 (at least) to put into the gun.
$85 to $100 for a trigger job, two (or more) tanks of gas, and a 5 hour round trip (that I will have to do twice, 1 to drop off, 2nd to pick up) to go to the Gun Smith.
Greg Derr Greg Derr - Precision Pistolsmith, who is over by the Cape.
So I may just stay with my M&P 40c and M&P 40 FS.

No you don't need a shield if you already have a great carry gun that is working for you. Now.if you didn't, then yes the shield might be what you need..

Only you can say what works best for you...the 908 is a great pistol (I've owned one, as well as a 3913, but traded them both on 1911s.) To me, the Shield is a better carry gun...and easier to maintain...but that's just me. YMMV.
The bigger question you need to ask yourself is, what is wrong with having both?

Need versus want
The eternal question. No I don't need one. Yes, I would like to have one. Am I willing to part with the money for one? We'll see.

Thank you all for the replies and photos. It does look quite a bit thinner and a bit smaller all around. It might be enough to make a difference with carry under a plain tee shirt. I can't really say that I need one but it can't hurt to pick one up if I find one at a decent price. I will wait until they are a little more common though. I may also look at the .40 cal as I don't have one yet. I'm glad I waited and didn't pick up a Ruger. Notheing wrong with a Ruger but I am partial to S&W products.

If I had only the guns I "needed" I would only have a bolt action 30-06, a medium frame .357 revolver, a 12 ga. shotgun and a small snubby for CC.
Instead I have a large collection of guns I don't "need" but "want"

Right you are. Asking this question on a gun board is like asking my wife if she needs a new pair of shoes.

I carry a BG 380 and I like it and it shoots well. I hope my wife likes it, because I am giving it to her and getting the Shield for me. That is being frugal.

I feel the same way, but I own one anyway. I don't use the laser, except for every now and then at the range to turn six rounds into one ratty hole. It kind of takes all skill required out of shooting when you just hold the dot there and the bullets hit the same spot every time.
The BG is so small the laser doesn't really get in the way. But I would be just fine without it.

But for safety, it has to come with a padlock...
And then of course there is the debate over the size of the nails that are most effective...

It has a long and pretty hard trigger pull on the first double action shot. After that it has a pretty decent single action pull of maybe 6-7 lbs. It's nothing like a crisp single action pull that you would find on a Smith revolver but decent. It's easily combat accurate and will put a magazine into a 6" target no problem at 15 yards.

In the immortal words of Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, U.S.M.C. (Jack Nicholson) from the movie "A Few Good Men":
"...you want a new Shield. You need a new Shield. We use words like Smith and Wesson, M and P, Shield. We use these words as a backbone of a life defending our desires to own quality pistols..."
At least that's how I remember it in the movie.

I just had to have one, too, until I found one at my LGS and had the opportunity to fondle it a bit. It's a little smaller than my M&P40c, but not much, really, so I decided to pass. FWIW, the guy at the store said they had a whole shelf full of them, so maybe there's hope to scratch that itch yet. (Denver)

If you do not have one then you need one, unless you have somehow managed to run out of space to store your extra pistols, you can't have enough guns!

I don't know. I just can't warm up to tupperware guns.
Give me a good steel revolver or 3rd generation S&W semi-auto.
But that's just me.

I have yet to meet a type of gun to which I can't warm up...I like steel, I like alloy, I like plastic...I do have a particularly warm place in my heart for 3rd gens, but the M&Ps are creeping in there...
