Default The M&P Shield .40 cal is now available!

My LGS called today. He received two weapons. I ordered one over the phone and pickup tomorrow after work. Can't wait to fire it - so much so, that I am thinking to give it a quick look over and fire pretty much out of the box when I get there. Any thoughts on that?

Range Report when you fire it. The .40 should be quite SNAPPY.
Please let us know.

That's my concern about the Shield in .40 as well.

I'm very impressed. S&W said to look for the .40 the first week of May, and voila! Doing what you say you are going to do seems unfortunately to not be the norm these days, but it sure is nice to have a company deliver on their promises. I have a gun magazine on my nightstand - the back cover has a hypey pic of the Springfield XDS with "March 2012" in big letters at the bottom. What a joke - still not shipping.

Picked it up tonight - range report as soon as possible. LGS received 5/1/12, my collection 5/2/12, and test fire date 4/25/12. Pretty fast from factory to my collection. I'll try to post pics as well but my camera is set at much higher pixel (too big to upload).

I'm wondering if a .357 Compact barrel will fit in one?

Others have breached the subject on other forums.

I'd be happy with one in 9mm but no more .40s for me please, i'll
opt for a .357 SIG instead.

Whether S&W will wise up and offer the SHIELD in .357 or at least
sell us non-LEOs the .357 pistols once again is unknown.

My local Dealer can't locate any SHIELDs in any caliber for me to fondle
quite yet.

M&Ps offer a more CZ like trigger to me than most other guns that I can stomach.

They have been equally as reliable and accurate/rugged as any CZs, Glock, or Rugers in the house.

Run a boresnake through it before firing, clear that barrel first, then throw some lead. Enjoy!

Have the 9. Pick up my 40 on Tuesday. I'm using the DeSantis scabbard speed holster for my 9 and 40 compact. Offered by Smith. Just tightened the retention screw. Fits perfectly.

I got to see the 40 at work today, we only got 1 in and it was spoken for. The customer was actually in the shop when we were getting ready to call him and tell him it came in. I'm on our list to get the 9, I could've gotten one of the 1st ones a few weeks ago but the cash wasn't there at the time. Now I can't wait for one.

Small world/forum.

I'm the customer Shark88 mentioned in his post.I hope to get to the range this weekend and will post my impressions here. This was the first Shield that I've handled and my first impression is very favorable.

I just got an M&P 40c on Monday and my Super Tuck knockoff holster got here today. I have been carrying the pistol for a few hours under a tee shirt for a few hours now. I don't know how it can get any better than this. My normal carry has been a Kimber Ultra Carry II and it carries great but not like the 40c.

Does the shield really carry that much better? I almost bought a Shield 40 from GB today but thought I better carry my new 40c for a while before I get one.

Have 9 and 40 in the shield and compact. I can wear the shield all day and not know I'm carrying. I know when I'm carrying the compacts. They are heavier and bulkier.

That's good to know. I'm looking forward to seeing one in person. I won't get both if I get one and will have to decide between the 9 and 40. I'm leaning 40 though.

You won't regret it. I personally like the 9 better. 40 is a little snappier but overall love carrying both. Good luck.

That was one of the goals for 2012+ for S&W -- not to announce products until they were actually ready to ship. I guess that also included lining up holster companies too. Kudos to them on a smooth product launch.

Got tired of waiting for them to come in so I went to my LGS and ordered one. He says he doesn't know when he will get them in but the first one they get in .40 is mine.

Range report. I fired 150 rounds, 50 each of Winchester 165 FMJ, Federal LE 165 FMJ, and Tull 180 FMJ. In a word FLAWLESS. I first fired my 40 FS to get a comparison of recoil and trigger feel. IMO, the recoil is not noticably diffferent fron the FS, except when using the 6 round flat bottom magazine. You only have 2 fingers on the grip and the weapon definitely snaps up when fired. The trigger seemed pretty smooth to me versus the FS (my FS trigger is factory). Attached are pics of the first 30 rounds fired all at 7 yards (now don't beat me up guys). First 10 were Winchester. The first 5 were all over and the second 5 are the group at 8oclock. Second 10 were the Federal. Pretty good group (for me) with 1 flyer. Third 10 were the Tull. Good group with 1 flyer at 11oclock. In a word the weapon is AWESOME. I'll try to answer any questions I can. Happy shooting!

Thanks for the report. The smallest .40 that I have is a Glock 27 and the recoil does not bother me. However, the Shield is obviously a lighter gun so I am wondering how much of a difference in recoil there will be. Have you shot a Glock 27 before with similar ammo?

Thanks

Glad to know that even the .40 is less heavy and bulkier than the
M&P Compacts.

I sold my Compacts ONLY for those reasons, and think that the Shield in 9mm

will suit my carry requirements perfectly.

IF I was to opt for the .40 caliber version, I wonder if it would be

robrossk,

Thanks for the range report with the 40 caliber Shield.

You might possibly want to look into the TALON.com Granular Grip stick-ons if the Shield feels a little slippery in any way to you.

My 9MM Shield with the Talon stick-ons are just AWESOME, they grip your hand, and I mean they really add grip purchase to the Shield. I prefer the use of the larger magazine in general.

I'll have to watch to see if Hickok45 does a video with the 40. He had a video out within days with the Shield 9MM. The man is an AMAZING SHOT WITH A BRAND NEW GUN, EVEN AT DISTANCE WITH IT.

I picked up the .40 yesterday and got out to shoot it this afternoon. It shoots as well as the 9mm just a little more recoil. I shot the first mag with the extended 7 rd mag and the rest of the 50 with the flush mag. The recoil is manageable and less than the PM40. Accuracy was good I didn't shoot any paper. Shooting 6" plates from 50' was not a problem seemed to shoot POA at 50'. Reliability was 100% with no malfunctions out of the box. I was shooting reloads 180 gr Berry flat point with 6.6 gr of Power Pistol.

Ever shoot a Walther PPS in .40 S&W? I'd like to know how it compared to that. The PPS .40 I shot was intolerable with the muzzle flip with any of the 3 different size mags. I thought the .40 Shield might exhibit the same, so I ordered a 9mm Shield.

I have only shot the 40 cal in the M&P Full Size and now the Shield. I found the shield to be very manageable except the smaller flush mount magazine was a bit more difficult (more snappy). May try the grips mentioned just earlier in this post.

I'm hoping the release of the .40 will result in the change/cancellation of the orders for 9's at my LGS and get me up the list quicker!

As promised here's a range report on the Shield 40.

I was able to fire 50 rounds of Winchester white box 165gr. and 20 rounds of Winchester SXT 180gr. Flawless, except for one failure to return to battery early on with one of the white boxes. The slide was only 1mm from being completely closed and tapping it forward corrected the stoppage. I'll report any other issues as I get to put more rounds through it but my confidence in the Shields reliability was not diminished. No other hitches from that point forward, including the SXTs.

Recoil is manageable and quick follow up shots are possible. I'm comfortable admitting fatigue was setting in toward the end of my session. This is not a criticism, the Shield 40 is a very compact concealed carry/back up piece chambered in a relatively powerful round. I'm sure the designers didn't put much weight into the criteria of making a comfortable pistol for extended range sessions. I'll start to sound like the other reviews out there from this point forward. These guns are accurate! The build quality is impressive, doubly so when you factor in the price point. The small size and light weight will surely make this my favorite carry piece once I get some more rounds down the pipe.

To balance the review, I need to find something to criticize so here it is. The trigger is indeed very nice, but if I could change one thing I'd take a shorter reset. As a recent convert to the Walther P99 / Smith SW99 I've become spoiled by their quick reset. Admittedly, I'm nitpicking and also comparing an ultra compact to a full size design.

Overall, the Shield 40 is an excellent pistol! No doubt the Shield can be considered the best in its class. Based on the product and the way they handled the launch Smith deserves to sell a ton of these and they will!

Now that that's out of the way, how about making a Shield 45 Smith?

I took the pics out of this response, but the Hornady FTX 165 grain .40S&W list 3" barrel ballistics (using an XDSC as a test gun) show pretty impressive results:
1055 FPS Muzzle Velocity WITH 408 Ft. Lbs of energy again at the muzzle. That's a mighty big wallop from such a small CCW.

I'd love to see someone with a chronograph review this thing with various SD ammo.

IF I was to opt for the .40 caliber version, I wonder if it would be
best with this:

I purchased my Shield in S&W 40 last week, and finely got to the range Sunday. Only thing the Shield needs is a loader as us old guys don't have the good hands anymore. My fingers hurt after loading both clips twice. Come on S&W ship a loader with the Shields.

In the absence of that, purchase an UpLula -

I joined this forum today because I have arthritis in my hands and had a very difficult time loading my M&P Shield 40 7 rd. mags.

All I can say is thank you for putting me on the UPlula loader. I ran down to my local GS today and picked up two, one for my bag and one for the shop. Greatest run related purchase I've made in many years.

Thanks again.
