Default Magazine spring weak on all three of my M&P45s

I took one of my new M&P45 full sized weapons to the range and after only on range visit of about 100 rounds I noticed that my magazines follower did not fully push it to the top of the magazine.

So one of the guys at the gun store where the range is said just to stretch the spring. So I took the magazines that were acting up and stretched the spring.

While pulling the spring out of the magazine I noticed that these springs were were uniform until you got within the top six or so springs and there was a weird angle in all of the magazines, and also the color of the springs was different!

Has any one else had this problem with their 45 full size cause not I carry my 40 as it does not act up with the magazine and feeds reliably!

Are these S&W factory mags, or after market? If actual S&W, I would call them for FREE replacement springs.

Default .45 spring problem

I believe that I saw a post here in which someone found that their .45 mag springs had been installed backward. Turn one around and see if it fits and works better providing it has not been too deformed by the shade tree gunsmith trick.

My agency bought M&P 45's last year. When I got home that night from qualifying I had a bent magazine spring. I took this pic as I noticed that the last round was not at the feed lips:

This is what it looks like disassembled:

Notice that the spring is painted green on the top. If your mag is green you have a substantial chance of it being bent as there were temper problems with these particular springs.

Thus far, I have replaced 10 springs out of 144 magazines...which is somewhere around 7% of what we have. Give customer service a call, they'll replace them.

Default 9mm and 45 compact

I have a 9mm and just purchased a 45 compact. The 45 compact just did the same thing to me. My 9mm mag. jammed up while I was taking a training class and I had do take it apart and unjam it, but the spring wasn't bent and I was able to still use it. The spring in the 45 compact was bent just like you described yours, so I called Smith & Wesson and ordered three new springs since I have three mags for the compact. S&W said they would replace them at no charge. Maybe I should have ordered some for the 9mm but I didn't. Will have to see if the new springs are any better. Customer service was good about it. Anyone else with this problem out there should do the same.

So I had a problem today at the range with two magazines. I was shooting 5 total 17rd M&P 9mm mags. Two of the magazine spring/followers stuck in the magazine with about 5-8 rounds left. The rounds would simply fall out of the mag when the mag was turned upside down. The spring/follower stayed jammed.

Here is what they look like in the mag:

Here are the spring disassembled. Notice the two tops ones (with blue basepads) are longer - these are the bad ones. The two bottom ones (with OD basepads) are the good ones.

I was simply going to order new springs from MidwayUSA ($3.98 each). Are y'all saying S&W will replace them (I have 8 total)?

Wonderful quality and QC going on at Smith and Wesson.. I suspect they buy the cheapest of what ever where ever they can to keep the cost down. Now there gen 3 guns were darn good and just as good as they were 20 years ago Out of the box you could take one out of the box clean it load it and feel safe.. M&P plastic, Glock, never liked Plastic guns.. Ya I have a M&P .22 and a M&P .45 FS also wife has a Ruger LC9.. So far for me they work I'm a older guy stuck in his way's and thought I would break down and try them.. I'm a colt 1911, gen 3 Smith& Wesson, Beretta kind of guy.. I think S&W M&Ps they cut there cost to build them for little to nothing after getting all set up and re cooping that cost.. Cheap guns but they do work and they will fix them. Just make sure there reliable before relying on them.. Sorry woke up in a bad mood today! George

I have a full size 45 and have experienced the exact same thing in 2 mags. Took out the spring and it was all deformed up top like others mentioned. I was able to bend it back into shape, but sounds like I should call up Smith if they'll replace em.

Sounds like there to long if there getting booger-ed up like that.. Some say that they are made like that and some say the factory is at fault for installing them in upside down.. Me I'm not sure.. I do have a FS .45 with a mag that has never been loaded.. Going to pull the spring now to have a look at it. I'll post what it looks like .. Never bend springs as you will lose there temper at that point in the spring.. if the spring is to long try cutting two coils off then go slow as you don't want to cut to much off.. Worth a try being you getting new springs anyway.. george

Ok New mag.. .45 M&P FS Spring length is 6 1/4" long and straight not deformed at all.. Painted end goes to the top of mag with follower attached and spring is painted BLACK for the first inch.. This mag was never loaded I should have counted the coils but think they would work out the same if cut to length but do take into account the reshaping of the end you cut.. George

Default Deformed MP45 mag springs

Had the same problem with a deformed MP45 magazine spring and customer service sent me replacements for my 3 duty mags. The top of my defective springs were painted black and the new are colored blue. Only 2 months old now but seem to work okay.
I have replaced my MP9C followers with the factory new a improved version just in case due to some breakage issues other forum members have had.

I called customer service - they want me to send the magazines in question to them to be inspected/replaced as needed. I would rather they send me the spring/follower - but I guess that can get expensive for them.

Soooo...my dilemma is that I simply wanted to fix the ones which gave me problems (x2) and replace springs for the others since I don't know WHEN they will give me issues (x6). Kinda stuck here. Will send (x4) mags which I think are the worst.

I will also make sure I mark all of these mags once fixed. I have (x4) mags inbound so I need to mark them and keep my spreadsheet on when they were ordered. Didn't see colors on the mags - will look now to see if they are painted.
