Supposed to start shipping in June.
Pleased about the improved and expanded grip texture. Also happy to be rid of a sliding sleeve on the extended magazine.
Less than thrilled about the front "serrations". Look wonky, almost as if someone made a machining error and decided to fly with it.
It will be interesting to see how the triggers come out on this new Shield.

Well, got M&P .45s in Compact, Mid and Full Size. Might as well get one of these to go with them...

Just remember, if you buy a new design in the first year, you are paying to be a beta-tester for the gun company. Wait..

No upgraded sights, such as those of the PC shield. This is a bummer, because we all know when the sales drop on this. They will release a newer one with upgraded sights.
And of course, u cant barrel swap the .45. Like those of us who have the .40 and swap to the 9mm barrel.

I don't consider the PC Shields a upgrade for a carry gun, I don't want fiber optic sights or porting in a carry gun, period. I would be swapping out the stock three dot setup anyway once I get the gun broken in, make sure it's reliable with my carry ammo and I can shoot well with it. Everyone else's mileage may vary, but I don't see fiber optic sights very well without light. "Isn't that kinda how they are supposed to work? " Porting may be somewhat of a benefit, but when you combine the two in a single stack carry gun, I personally think S&W missed the mark on that one.

I don't find the PC versions of additional benefit to me either but that's just me and my preferences. I am glad they exist as others do find their features useful or desirable.
Its good to have choices - a basic tenet of American values.

Not really the case here... It's called progression... You keep singing this theme about the Shield, like S&W is doing something dastardly.. you put out the 1st model and build on it from there..

If the .45 would have been available when I bought my Shield 9, I probably would have gone that way.
For now, I will stick with the 9mm and my .45 XDm 3.8 Compact.

Glad to see another choice for consumers.
Me...well there comes a time when I should stop buying guns... I have a Shield 9mm; for the sub compact .45 and I have XDS 3.3" and a Colt Defender. The Shield .45 came too late for me. But for others, good for them...

Shield .45 comes many years too late. Had they released this back when thhis topic was started, years ago. They would have had a much greater profit off of it. To me this is another, boost the sales of the shield (again). Just as they did with the NS version of the original shield and then the PC version of the shield. S&W is out of ideas (for the moment). So they are going back and trying to make what consumers wanted years ago.

Glock did the same thing with the Glock 43. Regardless, S&W has sold over 1,000,000 Shields. I think they know what they are doing. I'll bet the Shield 45 was also years in the making. Would you prefer they did a rush job and put out a low quality product or take their time and do it right?

I personally do not think they are late... with that being said I jumped on the XDS train when they first released and after the whole recall debacle and Springfield misleading their customers telling all XDS owners to send their guns in and we will fix them when they did not even have a fix for the problem. I sold my XDS shortly after that and went back to primarily shooting and carrying 9mm guns. Ever sense I got rid of my XDS I have been wanting another single stack polymer striker fired 45ACP carry gun. I hope this is the ticket, if it isn't then the search will continue. But if their 45ACP Shield is anything like the 9mm/40S&W counterpart I think it will be a great addition to my rotation.

You say this as if its a bad thing.
Evolution/enhancement of a product line is a normal and positive occurrence. It can help increase the manufacturer's bottom line and overall market health.
Would you prefer S&W did not implement marketing tactics that are known to deliver positive results?
I'm very glad to see the new Shield 45. I may or may not buy one. My personal dream Shield would be this new frame combined with a 3.75" barrel all done up in a 10+1 9mm package.
But S&W ain't in the business of building my dream gun, they do what their market researchers advise for the highest and fastest return on investment. And I'd wager this new Shield will be another home run for the company.
Who am I kiddin'?... I'll probably buy one

Manufacturing is a very simple game.
Make all the product(s) you can sell.
When you introduce a new product and demand suddenly exceeds your capacity to supply, you do not look for options or variations you could start offering.
Make 'em, ship 'em!
When you find yourself perpetually backordered for a long time and you are running at full capacity, you focus only on production of what is on order. The only exceptions are problems with the process or the product that HAVE to be addressed.
The rest has to wait.
It ain't rocket science.

Yeah, they boosted sales right past 1,000,000 and headed for 2,000,000. LOL

You detractors should hope the company stays in business. Where else you gonna get parts for your obsolete guns?

Ding ding ding, winnah winnah chicken dinnah.
Any company is in business to make money, no money no business.
I heard this on Shark Tank.
Oh, the much vaunted XDs45 had more issues than Superman and Spiderman combined.

Love them or hate them...look at Glocks, specifically the Glock 17. Between the Gen 1 and the Gen 4, there really aren't any drastic changes. Most changes were cosmetic, and some internal parts were slightly upgraded. For the most part, the Glock 17 is very much so the same now as it was in 1980s. Here is an article that explains each Glock Generation.
My point is, Glock has been selling the same pistols successfully for decades now. I did some "google-ing" and the most recent number I could find was 9,000,000 Glock pistols produced between 1980 and 2013.
These firearm manufactures know what they're doing....except for Colt, but that's for another thread. As mentioned in previous posts, if there is high enough demand then keep selling them. There is nothing wrong with upgrading pistols over time, as long as you can sell them. As with most businesses the bottom line is profit.

I'm pretty excited about this one! Still need to see it in person though. Definitely going to hold off on getting one until I see some reviews and what the QC is like.
Also, I'm assuming the grip pattern will be on all Gen 2 M&P's? Pretty sweet IMO!

My XDS45 is an amazing firearm, accurate, reliable as any gun made, never had a failure, recoil amazingly controllable for a small gun, good ergos, and carries GREAT.
That being said, can't wait for the Shield 45 I have on order, hopefully its equal to the XDS45 or better....not easy to do.

My XDs 45 - sent back for the recall. Waited 6 weeks for it to return. Went to the range to celebrate when it returned. The trigger promptly broke and I had to send it back for another 2 week run. I decided at that point to sell it and let someone else enjoy it.
I've missed having a .45 ACP in that size. Looking forward to finding a Shield .45 ACP when available and at a decent price. But I can wait. I'm in no hurry at this point. Actually, I'll need to start saving as I don't have money for it right now anyway. LOL

It's not too late for me. I've owned 2 FS9s, 2 Shield 9s and a 9c and none of them have been as accurate as my FS45. I finally gave up on the XDS45 with the horrible trigger and large block grip texture. I currently have a G43 which is fine, but I bought it thinking nobody would come out with another small 45 like this. If I buy it the G43 will become a pocket carry piece.

Is is a special design?
It's not exactly the same frame design is it??? I'd expect that it would be redesigned to be a tad heftier and a little bigger in some dimensions.

Slightly longer and slightly thicker but not by much.

Looked at the Shield 45 at the NRA Convention.
Bought one son the 9mm Shield + another son a AR (previously).
3Rd son will be getting the Shield 45 - I am supposed to be first in line at my local gun shop for delivery - he is guessing 3-4weeks.

My closest LGS is getting them in, but will be charging the full MSRP of $479. Looks like I'll check it out there and then buy it online.

Haha, yeah, not a money issue. I have the money. This will never be on the list of approved handguns in CA. I have a line item in my budget for guns. Save a little out of every paycheck. This way, when the "deal of the century" or the "I've always wanted one of those" comes along, I'm ready.

I would never do that. Unless I will save more than $100, I'm buying locally. If you don't buy locally, then you'll never be able to "check it out" because they won't be there. Isn't that service worth something?
Besides, how much do you expect to save? $50? $75? Due to the popularity of the Shield, I don't expect to see this one at much of a discount for quite some time; if you can even find one.
Also, at $475 this is a good deal already. Yeah, I'd pay the full retail and not look back.

Doesn't the Glock 36 fall into the single stack polymer striker fired .45acp carry gun category? Kahr also makes 2 quality levels in this category.
I'm ready to buy a .45 carry pistol and will be looking closely at the new Shield, the Glock and the Kahr. Not liking the XDS.

The G36 is not a true single stack 45ACP, the bullets are not stacked straight up and down inside the magazine like a standard 1911 is. Plus the width difference is drastic between it and even the XDS. Here is a picture for comparison.

To me it's like comparing a G26 to a G43... no contest on width and thickness of the slide.
Kahr puts out a great product but I would shy away from their lower tier CM and CW series, they are not made as well nor do they have the features of their other lines. But if you love a smooth double action revolver trigger pull it is hard to beat the triggers on any Kahr pistol no matter what tier or caliber you go with.

I don't know why anyone would even want one for what you'd give up,but that's just me.
ETA:What I'd really like to see is a nice .22 LR Shield for same size gun training on the cheap, and it would be a nice pest gun too.

M&P 22compact is about the same size

I have a few LGSs near me, but the closest one with a range I go to has been stupid with prices for the last few years. I've bought quite a few guns online and I've managed to always save $100 or more. Not only are the county taxes high, but there is an automatic $25 tax on each gun what I call "the gang banger tax" so "gunshot victims" hospital bills can be paid. They always have the newest guns for rent so I'll be able to check it out and fire it. I'm guessing the total price with taxes at this LGS would be about $550 otd. I'm sure I'll find it cheaper online and I don't mind being late to the game with a new model.
Even without all of the taxes I'm not paying full MSRP. Never have for a gun and never will. I know this will be popular, but I doubt tons of people are going to be trading in their Shield 9s and 40s for this due to the cost of 45 ammo alone. Right now there are many 9mm fans out there because of the price of ammo and that's fine by me. This is good for someone like me who has 9mm handguns, likes 9mm handguns, but prefers 45s.

I had a CM9 and after doing research it seemed the only difference with the PM9 was polygonal rifling and a bar stock slide stop. For the price I paid for the CM9, I could buy a PM9 barrel and slide stop directly from Kahr and it would still be cheaper. If I was okay with regular rifling like what most guns come with then a cheap slide stop upgrade would be all that's needed to get to PM9 status. This is all from when I had a CM9. They might have changed more since then.

I have the 9mm, never cared for the .40 cartridge, but this - I might just have to get one.

My thing is that all these people like to say the .40 is snappy. So thats why they bought a 9mm. Now all of a sudden these people want a .45 ACP.
Maybe they will make their mind up one day lol.
Shield in .22lr, now that would be one heck of training weapon. I'd personally be all over that idea.
Give S&W another 5 years, they'll make it for us. =-)

That's just the thing - I don't find .45 ACP to be more snappy than .40. I never cared for .40 and I owned an M&P 40FS - and I sold it and bought a 45C. I'm still going to wait and see what people think of this Shield before I make a purchase though.

Shield .45
I own and have carried a great many Glocks for duty and off-duty use. I prefer the Shield 9mm to the Glock 43 for a number of reasons. First, the Shield comes with metal sights rather than plastic. The magazine capacity is one - two rounds more. Finally, the Shield feels better in my hand. I shoot mine quite accurately and have always qualified very high with it.
I was a police officer for 37 years. During most of those, I was also a range master/firearms instructor. Based on my experience, I'll be getting a Shield .45 as soon as they are available and I have the ability to buy one. I've owned two XDs .45 pistols. Both were very good guns, but they had a 5 round magazine capacity that I found insufficient. The 7 round magazines made the gun less concealable and weird looking to me. The same is true of the Kahr pistols I've owned in .45 ACP.
I've owned every model of .45 ACP pistol made by Glock. I've also owned both the M&P .45 FS and compact models. I found the M&P to feel much better in my hand. The M&P also shot on par with, or superior to the Glocks.
Finally, based on my experience and opinion, I'll say that the .40 S&W is snappier than either 9mm or .45 ACP. Further, it offers little if any advantage over the 9mm with modern HP ammunition. Even so, as an old 1911 and .45 ACP proponent, I'll take the Shield .45 over any .40 or 9mm compact currently out there, assuming they don't develop any unforeseen problems.
