Another super serious Shield problem! Must read!
Ok, I've had my Shield for almost 2 weeks now. It shoots fine... But....
With all the out of battery problems, and other issues being reported. I shot it again... I discovered a serious problem with the gun and wanted to warn everyone...
Beware! When standing on the shooting range this morning, I discovered something horrible...
If I close both or my eyes while holding the Shield in a shooting position, I cannot see the target. However, if I grab one of my Beretta 92s and just barely peak at the target with one eye, then I can see enough of the target to fire the gun with accuracy.
BUT, when I hold the Shield again and close both eyes completely, I just can't see a darn thing.
I will attempt to make a you tube video of this as soon as I can, because I find it to be a serious flaw with this gun. I've also contacted S&W directly. They have issued a call tag for my weapon, and it's being sent off today with overnight shipping. They are extremely panicked and they want to have the gun in their hands as soon as possible.
I don't want to take any chances, so I've decided to let the professionals take a look at the gun to see if this can be replicated at S&W headquarters!.
I will be posting this warning on EVERY gun forum I am a member of, in order to get the word out to everyone. Owners of Kahr firearms who inexplicably hate the new Shield will also receive a certified copy of my warning through registered mail sent through the US Postal Service! I don't want to miss anyone.
I am just SO, SO glad I discovered this flaw in the Shield before I needed to use my weapon in a self defense situation.
You have been warned!

Now THAT is a serious condition!! Be sure to warn everyone quickly. Did your frame crack during this also? I heard about this on another forum, that frames are cracking with your eyes closed....sometime with only one eye partially open as well!!!
Thanks for the good laugh.....

Man, I am getting seriously upset here!
When I got home, I discovered another problem!!!
When I turn my Sony LCD tv on, if I put my fingers in my ear, I can't hear a damn thing. But if I turn my Samsung LCD tv on in my bedroom and I sit down, I can hear everything just fine.
I'm going call the company. There is no excuse for this shoddy workmanship....

Yet another failure of the Shield. The grip angle is faulty.
If I hold it like a Glock, I 'bout shoot myself in the toes!

OMG!!!!!!
When I read this thread, I dropped what i was doing and ran right home to see if I was having the same issue. Grabbed my Shield and drove straight to the range.............
I was totally shocked to see that I could EXACTLY reproduce the problem you mentioned....... What in the HELL was S&W thinking releasing such a dangerous firearm to the general public.
I am appalled....and just to show how mad I am, I am going to shoot this damned thing till it falls apart...... that will show em.
I will update you in 10 or 20 years when that actually happens.

I knew this would turn into an epidemic. We must put a stop to this. Who's down for a road trip to S&W to handle this in person?
If only I could find my car keys

SHIELD PROBLEM IS JUST LIKE RANDALL KNIVES
I own a Randall Stilletto and whenever I hold it by the blade
with the Leather wrapped handle facing away from me and
thrust the blade twoard me, I have cut my hands to shreads and penetrated my abdomen. I have since sold all these defective knives that only work in one direction!!!!!

Sounds like a pretty good product liability claim to me, All us Shield owners need to get in touch with CAJUNLAWYER and see if he thinks we have a case for a class action complaint.

Okay, I have ANOTHER serious problem now... I was at the Fed Ex place - ready to ship the Shield out.
But, I can't get their front door (at Fed Ex) to open when I push on it. It only opens when I pull on it instead. What the hell?
I kept pushing and pushing... I gave up and went home....
Damn it...

Good one, shipwreck! I saw this one on the other forum, and almost didn't look at it, because of how out of hand it got over the past few days.
Still waiting on the new magazines to ship, and received a nice postcard in the mail from S&W acknowledging the order and explaining their backlog.
Kudos to them for taking the time and effort to send that out--small things like that really make a difference to the customers, and you can be sure that I'll be giving a good recommendation to anyone asking about their product and/or their customer service.
Meanwhile...how is that ESP targeting technique going?
Take care, man!

OMG....I don't own a Shield but I was planning on getting one.
But, since I do own other S&W pistols I decided to check them to see if they had this flaw.
INCREDIBLE!!! They all had this flaw. I tried one after the other...picked up my CS45, aimed at target, but as soon as I closed my eyes the target would disappear! I also experienced an other problem; everything went black. I mean like pitch black. The same thing happened with my 4566, 457, 5906, and 3953.
I quickly called S&W customer service and was passed on to a guy with a British accent. Our conversation below:
Him "Use the Smith & Wessons, Luke"
Me "I don't think I can, I can't let go of my fear"
Him "Let go"
Me "Are you sure?"
Him "Trust me"
Me "OK, but do I keep my eyes open?"
Him "Don't trust your eyes, they will deceive you"
So I did...and sure enough I hit the target even when I couldn't see it. It felt like some force was guiding me...weird.
The customer service guy was awesome; a master of his craft. If anybody else has this problem, call S&W customer service and ask for Ben.

Down here in the bayou country, we put together a top-level task force
to investigate this product defect - with $27 in research funds, Boudreaux, Thibodeaux and a couple of Texas Aggies have found a solution. We will begin marketing "Shield Sight Saver" tomorrow, $49.99 for the economy size -- put a couple of drops in each eye and a couple of drops on the sights of your Shield -- both you and your Shield will instantly be able to acquire targets if you squint your eyes.
We also have a good supply of Seeing Eye Shooting Support Dogs -- these skilfully trained dogs will help you load your Shield, gently nudge you in the direction of the firing line, gently use their muzzle to lift your shooting hand towards the target, and nip you on the rear when it is time to squeeze the trigger -- $5800 shipped to your LPS (local pet store).
Coming soon ----------------- our new line of "The Blindside" sights, Three Blind Mice ammo, and Stevie Wonder shooting glasses.

By golly, you have solved the problem. Put me down for one of those special dogs.. Or hell, I want TWO!
I'm calling S&W tomorrow and tell them you found a solution. They need to start packing one of those dogs in every Shield box!

Wow, just tried this with my XDM. Both eyes close and I see the target just fine, you really have a problem with your shield.

To ensure that all variables related to this problem are fully evaluated, a call tag will be issued for you to ship your eyeballs to S&W so that they can be tested with your Shield.

Just another example of that poor S&W quality control.

I tried this with my PM9, and I think there's a WORSE issue with my PM9 than with the Shield!
While you state you can't see the target when you close both eyes, I've noticed after closing both eyes and attempting to pull the trigger that people around me complain about some sort of bird infestation? Many of them yell, "Duck!"
So, yes, while your Shield should indeed go back to S&W, I think my PM9 needs to go back, too, for a geese infestation.

Maybe some of you gun experts can teach us that don't know....
Is the slide supposed to go forward on its own when retracted? Or is it supposed to hang up on something or what?
I've heard it both ways now. Some say the slide should go forward after releasing it, others say it's perfectly normal for a slide to hang up and get stuck in the open and unfirable position.
If it's normal how far back is okay for the slide to get stuck? 1/4"? 1/2"? 1"? How far back should I be able to pull the slide and have it get stuck before I need to send it back for repair? Or is it okay to get stuck anywhere?
If I have to shoot one handed and pull my gun out from under my coat and the coat drags back on the sight and opens the slide a bit knocking it out of battery and rendering it unable to shoot that's perfectly normal?
I think I'd rather have a gun that goes back into battery. But I guess I'm just not as smart as others.

In that scenario your coat would push on the sights or rear portion of the slide and would not knock it out of battery unless you are carrying it upside down which sounds very serious indeed.
BTW, when retracted and let go a slide always goes forward. The condition that we are laughing at is someone forcing the slide to stay open. Properly holstered the "condition" can not happen.

Actually the original post was a man who removed the gun from his pocket and found the slide out of battery. Dozens of others have said their gun does it too. And other manufacturer's guns do it.
So now I ask, how much should a slide stick before it is considered a defect? Many are saying if the slide is opened just a little, like just a 1/4" and it doesn't go back that's not a problem!
Well, how much is?

Ya' know, I have a bunch of defective pennies. They're supposed to land on either heads or tails 100% of the time.
I have found that under certain repeatable conditions I can actually make some pennies (but not all) BALANCE ON EDGE!!!
I cannot make all pennies do this but some I can make do this every time.
I demand someone do something.
NOW!

I'm shocked! SHOCKED, I say!
It doesn't work with my S&W revolvers. They're so awesome, I can't stop looking at one if it's in my hand!
