Default Shield Accuracy

On my 2'nd range outing with my new Shield I tested several different loads at combat distances of mainly 10/15 yards. All shot reasonably close to the POA and was surprisingly accurate for a micro pistol. I realize this is never going to be a target pistol or be as accurate as a full size M&P. But for it's intended use as a CCW is accurate enough. With it's slender grip it is harder to shoot accurately than my M&P9c and you have to experiment with how much of your trigger finger to use. Here's what a couple mags of Federal 147 grn HST did at 10 yards.

There's a guy on ar15.com that would disagree with you. I'm not a registered member there, but my advice to him would be "adjust your sights."

Default I'm Shielded

Every trip to the range strengthens my love affair with my Shield 9. My patterns are getting tighter and tighter. Expermenting with different grips, fist on fist, haven't tried the cup and saucer or one handed yet but probably give it a try next time. Low and left at first but getting better every trip. Haven't tried it at ranges outside of close quarters yet, but will next trip. Enjoy. Watch your six.

Hickock45 stretches his out to 80 yards. Shows that these little guns are way better than our capabilities.
For defensive work, you did some good shooting.

That's me.

I'm two range sessions in, plus a couple hundred dry fires and I am having a hell of a time getting along with this gun.

My primers show firing pin drag marks and signs that the gun is unlocking early. The brass is coming out charred on one side in a triangular pattern - narrow towards the case mouth and covering half the case towards the rebate.

I am getting completely different results when I change ammunition. To wit, at 10 yards 115s group like cheap buckshot at 40 yards and nowhere near point of aim. 124s tighten are only slightly better and move a little closer to POA.

With 147s the gun begins to shoot real groups more like what I see others shooting and posting about. The elevation finally correlates between POA and POI. The windage is only slightly off.

I shoot other platforms reasonably well. That I am getting completely different results with different bullet weights, in conjunction with the firing pin drag marks tells me "something ain't right."

I've boxed this thing back up. I'm not ready to settle for a CCW gun that will only shoot well with one load.

I may call S&W and see what they say. I really want to like this gun, and am disappointed with my experience so far especially in light of all the glowing reviews.

Brass coming out charred is a sign of a not perfectly concentric chamber. I had the same occurrence in a M&P45c, talked to S&W and they replaced the barrel. The number of Shields they're cranking out it doesn't surprise me that a few bad ones will leave the factory. But since S&W has such good customer service they will make it right. Give them a call and they'll send you a shipping label, they will either fix it or replace it quickly.

I've requested a return authorization. I'd like to get this thing right.

I did have other shooters try this gun and get the same results.

Rest assured S&W will make it right, their CS is second to none. I like mine so much I just bought a 2'nd one this afternoon as a backup. Now I hope it shoots as good as the first one which I'm sure it will.

Today I hit the range with my 2'nd Shield hoping it would perform as well as my 1'st one, it did. The more I shoot this great little pistol the more I like it. Here's a group shot offhand at 10 yards, this time with Winchester 147 grn PDX1. A friend who was wringing out some accuracy loads with his Shield started shooting some of the hotter loads. Although the manual says no to +P+ loads he tried some Winchester 127 grn Ranger +P+ which proved to be very accurate, so much so he decided to use it as his carry load. The Shield easily handled it and the recoil wasn't noticeably different from any +P load. I'm beginning to think that S&W is just protecting itself with the +P+ warning. All in all a great range day with this truly exceptional pistol.

A little off topic but yesterday I brought another pistol to the range I hadn't shot in years, my Beretta 92. This was one of the first stainless examples imported into the country and I carried it as a duty pistol until retiring. Not shooting it for such a long time I almost forgot how good a pistol it is. Quite large it seemed huge compared to more modern polymer pistols. But for a combat handgun I can see why it is still popular, it is a classic. My range compadres, veterans all enjoyed shooting the Beretta, and all agreed that the US military made a good choice with the M9. This old duty pistol is still a tack driver even after several thousand rounds. Ahhh nostalgia.......

I had a Glock 23 that wouldn't shoot into a hat at 25 yards with 180 grain ammunition, any of it. It shot tighter groups with 155 grain ammo, but still not what I wanted. Finally it shot CorBon 135 grain JHP into sub-3 inch groups at 25 yards.

I got rid of it, not because of accuracy issues, but because it felt like shooting a 2x3.

Lubed my new Shield and hit the range today.
50rds federal FMJ
50rds of web
25rds of win ranger HP 147gr
All perfect.

POI was 2-3" left of center and maybe a 1/2 inch high.

My 1'st Shield shot slightly to the left until I drifted the front sight. My 2'nd one is dead on from the factory, these things really shoot well.

I hear ya! Jensens in Loveland has had 6 in to date - all sold within a couple hours of receiving them. I (Boulder county) had to order mine on Gunbroker.

Now that is a good collection of Berettas, you too must believe as I do that you can never have to many guns.

Saw this Thread and had to brag a little bit. Here is a target shot at 10 yards through a brand new Shield.

This target wasn't shot by me....it was shot by my wife using the 7 round magazine. Seven shots, seven holes....don't mess with a Gunsite Graduate, and a Grandma to boot!

Well, since I am bragging here are two more photos. She shoots my M&P15 as good (or better) than I do, and is always eager to go shooting...plus love's dragging me to Cabela's to go shopping!

Her M&P 15 target shot at 100 yards.
