I have a new Shield and am looking to improve the Shield trigger with Apex etc. What did you do and why that modification? Also getting Talon for it.

If you're into DIY, before spending your money on the Apex kit, see if the DIY Berwell M&P trigger job mentioned here ( DONE WITH MY SHIELD!!! ) might do the trick for you. The Apex kit is great, but doing the relatively simple buffing yourself lets you get to know your pistol just a bit better (imho).

Many also seem to be doing a Night Sight swap-out.
Of course... There's also Talon Grips and Hogue/Pachmayr/Limbsaver grip sleeves.

Oh yeah... James at XD-HS2000.com is doing some great Slide Blasting/Gun Koting on the shields: Got my Shield back ... Apex trigger , TFO night sights, KG gun kote =)
James could the Apex, Night Sights and Gun Kote for you in one fell swoop

I did the Apex hard sear and the Apex USB (ultimate striker block) and oh man, what a difference. Lightened the trigger pull by at least 2lbs and the reset is incredible, much better IMHO than my Glocks. Both parts made an instant difference in the smoothness and over-travel of the trigger but after 200 rounds with the new parts it is even better. The lighter trigger is silky smooth but not too light, has a very even pull and very crisp break, and the reset is short and very positive. Rapid fire follow up shots are a breeze and it made a very accurate pistol even more so enjoyable to shoot. After I did my shield, I upgraded by M&P compact .40 and full size .40 to the Apex sear and USB as well and all feel exactly the same to me. What an improvement all the way around.

And for anyone who doesn't know, the standard Apex Hard sear and USB kits fit both the shields plus the compact and full size 9, 40, and 357 sig. Apex has different parts for the .45s and pro series.

Going to get night sights like on my other pistols. Since I will use this for ccw I am going to leave the trigger stock like my Glocks.

Aside from a little paint in the etchings and having shot it today for the first time for 50 rounds 20 in the red one dead center two on top of the X and two below the X at 5 yards (15 feet) most of the others to the left and a couple to the right for the first time to fire this weapon I was completely happy with it not so much with my bad habits!

All my shots were center mass with Remington 180 grain, I am still waiting for my gunsmith to call me about my full size 40 M&P, and starting to get worried I gave him an Apex trigger kit and TruGlo sights to install!

Apex hard sear and TruGlo TFO's...waiting on some Talon grips. I received the Dual IWB holster from Stephen at RKBA and highly recommend it.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Crossbreed Minituck on order. I'll do some Apex upgrades plus Trijicon Bright and Tough night sights (I like these sights for range use in addition to personal protection) and Talon rubber grips when they become available again.

I have the rubber Talon Grips on my Shield. Really like them. I am going to have XS Big Dot sights put on. Just hoping the front sight doesn't have an issue with my Crossbreed holster. I also have done an unsanctioned mod to my Shield. I made a plug just to put myself more at ease so the safety wouldn't become engaged by accident. I have put a 100 rounds through it with no issues. Works great.

I am going to change the firing pin plunger lock with the Apex part and buff the internals with a ceramic rod to smooth out the action. Other than that I am very happy with the gun the way it is.

Soleshtr: how does the plug stay put? What did you make it out of?

Once I know the I-dot sights will fit this gun, I'll switch to them or straight eights.....the standard Karh sights were my favorite, but the I-dots are the closest ive seen to them.

I'll also get around to some apex and buffing eventually...and may rig up a safety block until someone comes out with one. This is my first M&P, so I'll see how the melonite holds up before cerakoating it.

I used gripper pads that are used on the bottom of furniture on wood floors. Just cut it to size. It is adhesive on one side so I stuck it to the safety lever. They are 3/16" thick which is just the right thickness. The slide just barely touches it and rides over the top. If you do this, don't cut it any wider so that it sticks out from the slide. The first one I made did and I was worried about the serrations catching on it when the slide would come forward. The second one I cut I made it thinner. You can't tell from the pics but the plug is actually recessed in from the slide a bit. It works great. Try engaging the safety, it just gets pushed right back down again. Doesn't look half bad either.

I've added a Handall Jr, and dressed up the slide, I'm looking into sights, or just might add Nightsiters.

Installed apex DCAEK. Factory trigger was at 6.5lbs. Went down to 4.5lbs. with a short/positive reset.

Added Truglo TFO night sights ( xd-hs2000.com as stated by someone earlier) and polished the feed ramp.

Shield shoots like a champ! I might get brave and try stippling the grip, but I need to practice on some pmags first, lol.

Smoothed and polished the trigger loop with Arkansas stone and Gunsmith's steel, Striker Block Cam gets a polishing with the dremel (easy on the top). Decided to install an APEX Hard Sear w/comp spring (all I had at the moment) and their Ultimate Striker Block also with a comp spring which I actually prefer, but left the factory trigger return spring in there and it's just beautiful now. Silky smooth press all the way back, then a crispy 4ish lb. break with very little creep.

Working on adjustable pre-travel and over-travel stops in my time off, looks promising.

You could make several thousand of those & sell them for $5 each. You just started a new business!!

Had the trigger work done right after I bought my Shield 4/13/12 and had Trijicon HD night sights installed. I plan on top serrations later on and possibly stippling on the grip.

Default Apex sear spring note

If you bought the Apex Duty/Carry Trigger Kit, it comes with an extra pressure sear spring. With that spring installed the trigger pull weight should be 5 to 5.5 lbs. If you use the stock sear spring the trigger pull will be reduced down to 4 to 4.5 lbs.

My 9mm is at ATEi right now getting the "Shield Package" Trigger work & a stippling job. I'm also going to put some night sights on it when I figure out which kind I want.

Idk... for now I may just paint the engravings. Maybe eventually I'll improve the sights or trigger. I think Talon grips would be the next investment for it though.

Talon grips are a must have for the Shield. The stock grip is too smooth and if your hand is damp, it will slip. I have the rubber Talon grips on LC9, and they add a lot of extra grip to the gun. I tried to order the grips for my Shield 40 last week and they have a message on their website. It stated:

"We are going through changes within the company, orders are currently suspended. Please check back for status updates."

I sent an email asking if they new how long the delay would be and their reply said it would be a month or so. The way it was written, I got the feeling there was a death in the family. Likely higher up in the company and they are now trying to figure out what to do???

My Shield is currently at Robar getting their NP3 electroless nickle finish as I'm a big proponant of this finish. It will come back looking like my other M&Ps. I highly recommend this finish on a carry piece and it is well worth the money.

Agree on the NP3. I have a Glock 26 with it,and my 2 1/2 inch Mod. 19 is also NP3'd.
As to modifications to the Shield....None..with the possible exception of a front night sight.Even that is not written in stone.

Why would nickle finish enhance the gun as a carry piece? I like nickle finish too but don't see how it will help in that regard.

The NP3 is actually a combination of electroless nickel impregnated with teflon.Extremely hard and wear resistant.
NP3 also is extremely easy to clean even when extremely dirty and is self lubricating. It's not like a "nickel" plating that you might be thinking about, like the normal nickel finishes. NP3 is excellant for guns that see hard duty and lots of exposure to extreme conditions such as weather also.Hope this helps to answer your question.

There is more good info on Robar's webpage. The keyword here as you may have noticed is"extreme". It's long term, hard use protection. It's not really as much about the "color" of the finish as it is about durability.NP3 just happens to be a white/gray finish due to the nickel content.

mag318 would have to answer that, but Robars prices can be found on heir website. They are not cheap but as mag318 said, well worth the cost,at least for me.
The price includes coverage of all internal parts in the frame and slide also.NP3 has a lifetime guarantee, and there is now an NP3 plus finish also.

I always opt for what is called the "Norton Special" where they plate just about all the metal parts even within the frame. This normally costs $199, but when I called Robar they were running a montly (June) special with the "Norton Special" costing $149.It's always a good idea to call ahead and ask about montly specials, usually these occur in the late fall.
The 1'st M&P I had Robar do was my M&P9c. To date it has around 2K rounds through it and is carried in a IWB holster almost daily, it still looks like new. The factory Melonite finish while durable will quickly show holster wear. The NP3 does not plus it really makes cleaning much easier. Any carbon or fouling is very visible and can be wiped away with a cloth or patch. Because of the teflon in the electroless nickle very little lubrication is required, in fact you can shoot your pistol without lube and it will function reliably. This finish is expensive but you get what you're paying for.

All my shots were center mass with Remington 180 grain, I am still waiting for my gunsmith to call me about my full size 40 M&P, and starting to get worried I gave him an Apex trigger kit and TruGlo sights to install!
How'd you do the paint in the etchings? Looks nice.

Painting's pretty easy... There are a few threads with the step-by-steps. A general Google Search will get you a some real good paint/nail polish threads on XD-Talk (as well as a few YouTube videos), if you can't find 'em here.
If you're not sure about which color you want, you can experiment with Crayon (Crayon comes off easier).
Check this site. The technique is pretty similar for China Marker, Crayon and Paint.
White Lettering On Guns

I use Crayon and change the color periodically.

Since I live in MA, we are going to see a MA compliant 10# trigger. I already have an Apex kit on hand to pop in just as soon as the guns get to our gun shops and into my hands.

Only change I'm making is adding night sights...I keep on hearing how great the Apex triggers are for the MP pistols, but I'll wait til I buy another MP pistol to add the Apex trigger.

DON'T get an LC9! I bought one a month ago and hated it. It was accurate and never jammed, but the long trigger and nonexistent reset sucked. Then there is the mag safety. Sold it Saturday and bought a Shield 9 today. I'm in heaven.

I did the Burwell job to the striker block and the sear. Smoothed striker block channel. Polished striker, striker block, sear and trigger bar to mirror finish. Cost - $0. Trigger just as nice, or maybe even nicer than the Apex.

I'm working on an insert for the void if one chooses to remove the safety lever. This one will hold the sear pin in place, just as the safety lever does now. Stay tuned.

Hey to each his own (it is supposedly still a free country) but I'm going to say this IMO. The shield is a easily concealable carry gun and it has no role in any competition (maybe the rare BUG side match) or really much serious target shooting for that matter. If you do anything to that gun other than sights, grips, maybe a little trigger smoothing or general cosmetics you are asking for trouble if you ever have to shoot someone with it. I'm not so sure even the so called duty/carry APEX kit has any place in a carry gun. No different than its a bad idea to use any ammo for SD that is hand loaded or non mainstream commercial. The guy planning on using APEX to circumvent MA law (no matter how archaic) is just asking to get the shaft. Every other issue aside that could be a firearms violation with a mandatory min if it was ever discovered in an investigation.

Trust me I'm the first to spend too much money tricking some of my guns but not the one(s) for carry. Just too much great stuff these days, that does not belong on a carry gun, that really came about because of the demand for competition parts. I really don't think there would even be an Apex or much of the cottage industry if not for IDPA, USPSA, 3 gun etc. With all the local/state/federal laws we all walk a fine line exercising our 2nd amendment rights. I just prefer to not end up in jail or sued into oblivion.

Is there evidence out there where someone was convicted because they had a trigger job done? And that they would have been acquitted had the trigger been stock?

Do you have a reference?

Don't need a reference. As stated it was an opinion. As to your first two questions I never said anyone had. The point is whether its reloaded ammo or a fundamentally modified gun you are needlessly exposing yourself to product liability and to potential evidence that could sway a juries opinion. If you shoot someone your gun will be analyzed in a lab and the trigger pull will be measured. If I have to shoot someone and go to criminal and/or civil court I want the evidence in my favor. For my carry gun I will let any product liability remain in the hands of S&W and Winchester.

Nothing. I test it and if it works, I leave it stock. If it has a problem, I send to S&W for repair, and then I leave it stock. It is a self-defense weapon and should not be modified.

True it's a great gun but it is my carry weapon and I want it as fine tuned as possible. New sights and an apex kit will not make it any less a self defense weapon

Put ameriglo sights on mine. Getting ready to paint the slide, my dad done his shield and it looks killer. Plotting a trigger kit next.

Since I'm in Massachusetts we get the 10lb trigger so instead of the Apex kit I had a local gunsmith do a carry trigger job. Then Ameriglo night sights, three dot with orange front.

Massachusetts law applies to manufacturers and FFL's. A legally licensed gun owner can make any modification they want.
No matter what, if you use your firearm and cause harm, even if justified, you're going to be sued whether your gun is stock or your ammunition is white box.

Cleaver plugging the safety. My only concern would be the plug coming lose and interfering with the slide.

Why not use super glue ?

Except fortunately for places like Florida... If the shooting was justified under stand your ground your immune to civil suits. Ask Treyvon's folks who won't be getting a dime from Georgie. Granted he used a stock gun and factory SD ammo but even things like wrongful death are out the window. I believe it was threatened but Z's lawyer nipped it in the bud by formally getting the immunity after his acquittal. That gun was examined/tested by FDLE and had it been modified or had he been shooting "taxi driver" specials it would have at least been thrown in his and the juries face by the prosecutors.

Even though OJ was found innocent of murder he was sued into ruin in civil court. Even though I think OJ was guilty as sin that concept has always been wrong to me especially since civil court has much lower standards. If you can't win in criminal take it to civil. IMO it amounts to double jeopardy and is just wrong...

I think that's why so many want to really overturn laws related to castle doctrine and stand your ground. So even if your innocent and justified in your actions they can ruin you for life financially. Criminals don't like laws that protect victims.
