5,000 round maintenance?
Hi All,
I'm coming up on 5,000 rounds through my full size M&P9. I'm wondering if there is anything I need to do in order to maintain its high performance besides regulars cleanings? I.e. replacing recoil spring replacement? As of now, it's in tip top shape and the performance is impeccable. I don't foresee any future problems and I'd like it to remain that way. Oh, I recently polished the feed ramp with LOTS of Q-tips and Flitz polisher and it's working perfectly. If there's something I'm missing, please feel free to let me know. Thanks!

Over 8,000 on my Shield9. Going strong like the Energizer Bunny. Regular cleaning after every use. Clean mags at regular intervals (if possible). Absolutely NO issues.

Springs do eventually wear out, but unless you're having issues leave it alone other than routine cleaning.

Might as well order a new Recoil Spring just to have on hand. If it's a range gun, keep shooting until you have a problem. If it's a carry gun, I would change out the RSA at 5K.

It's range and carry. Getting a new carry in the next month or so. Where would you recommend I order a RSA? Thanks!

Midway USA, Brownell's, or Gunsprings.com
Midway probably has the best price. You can get the spring only from Gunsprings, but they say you have to use their guide rod with it. But they do offer different weight springs.
Well, Brownell's does have the 16 lb. factory weight spring for $6.99
Or this SMITH & WESSON RECOIL GUIDE ROD ASSEMBLY | Brownells is a captured RSA.

Thank you. I was just thinking that I would want to stay with factory parts. I don't know much about the internals of my pistol to be modifying parts. Factory works best for me, especially if I can get both spring and rod together. Lol. Thank you and I'll check out Brownells for the part!!

Chances are S&W will send one to you at no charge. Give their customer service a call.

But there isn't anything wrong with it! I thought something had to be wrong in order to receive something like this free of charge. It's just a regular maintenance part.

Nope. When my M&P 40c hit 6000 rounds, I called S&W Customer Service and asked if they thought it was time for a new RSA. My 40c was working perfectly at that time, but the CS representative said it would probably be good to have a new one, so he sent me one free of charge. I guess it's all part of S&W's lifetime service policy. So call 'em up and ask for a new RSA. You've got nothing to lose.

Thanks for the advice. I have over 5k rounds through my M&P 2.0 9mm since purchasing it on February 24, 2017. I'll be calling them this week.

5000+ rounds in two months? Impressive! S&W needs to treat you right, as you are clearly an enthusiastic M&P user.

Impressive! It took me 8 years of shooting to get to 5k rounds. I would replace the RSA only if it is a self defense weapon.(not a range toy)

The flat wound recoil springs that the M&P uses last much longer than the traditional round wound springs. The 5K replacement schedule is a holdover from those days. You can replace them that early if you want to, I replaced mine when they got to 35K rounds and the pistol was still working great when I did. I have over 100K on one pistol and it still shoots like a new one (I am on a different barrel though) Not sure why Smith would send one at 5K, must have been in a generous mood. The people I talk to there say they test the spring to 50K without failure and then quit testing.

I have a fairly new 45 shield with about 700 rounds through it. I called s&w and asked to buy an assembly to have on hand. They sent me a new one free of charge. Give them a call. They are very generous with these.

The Shields have a different design recoil spring assembly, they also have been problematic since their introduction.

FYI, I called S&W this morning. In summary, they said I don't need to change the recoil spring any time soon. The rep said IF it made me feel better, I could change it at 7,500 rds, but I could go all of 15-20k before thinking about changing it. I told him I use it for carry and it said it's all the same, in that it's not like a car where I have the change the oil every 3k-5k miles. He asked if I were having issues and I said no....not since my last malfunction which was 4k rounds ago (dirty feed ramp) then he said to just shoot it and over time I'd know if I need anything changed based on how it functions, but not to worry myself about it any time soon. So...I guess I'll keep shooting and having fun. Thanks, guys.
