Default New M&P 9 Owner Seeks Apex Advice

First, thank you in advance for any help. I am soon to be the owner of new M&P 9 (fs). Very happy with the purchase as this will be my home defense and occasional range gun. I have read plenty about the Apex trigger modifications available and feel like I will go that route should I not be pleased with the stock trigger performance.

My question is which kit should I choose? Have heard that newer models have better triggers and some get by just installing the hard sear. I guess I was looking at getting the DCAEK initially but perhaps that may not be necessary. Any advice in this regard?

I am not looking to competitively shoot, just want a nice performing gun. I do plan to give the stock trigger some time before doing anything, but just gathering intel in the mean time.

My advice is to wait until you have shot the gun enough to know what you want.

Mine is still the stock gun I bought a year ago and I'm happy enough with the trigger.

Unless you have extensive experience with a pistol that has a particular trigger feel, you probably won't gain anything by changing out parts.

I agree that you must check out the trigger pull before making any decisions. If you want the kit then you have to decide what trigger pull you want, and what is it going to be used for. For target/comp gun, check out the FSS and get the comp springs for a sub 3 pound pull. The regular kits are D/C 5 to 5.5 pounds and Comp is sub 3 pounds pull. I did not buy a kit, only their sear and striker blocker. I used the stock springs and got a 4.25 pound pull.

I'd wait until you've gone through at least a couple of hundred rounds or so. By then, you'll get a better feel if you still want to make the changes.

Smith & Wesson has updated the OE trigger sear to address the complaint of a vague trigger reset.
I had an M&P40 FS that I had installed the Apex sear & Striker Block in, and I loved the trigger. The sear lightened the trigger and the striker block removed the "gritty" feeling.

I just bought a brand new M&P9c last week, and the factory trigger break is improved compared to the old style sear, but the gritty feeling is still there.
I ordered the Apex Striker Block to start with, but I am going to wait on the sear for now and see how I like it. I may end up replacing the sear too, I'll see how it goes.

I agree with the advice to fire the gun first.
If you do decide to make changes, I've had success with just the sear & striker block rather than a whole kit.

If you have the gritty trigger, the Apex USB may not solve the problem, as I found out. Watch the video I made.

loveMD, I'm in the same exact situation as you. I placed my order for a M&P 9 FS and can't for it to come in. Like others have advised, I will give the stock trigger a fair shake. Let me know what you end up doing.

Default M&P 9

For home defence ....
How relibale is the M&P 9 over a revolver. I have M&P .22 pistol I think I would like to have the 9. I trust the revolver but sure like my M&P. My current home defence is a S&W model 66 357 short nose.

Others will gave more first hand knowledge. But I chose this firearm largely due to its track record of reliability. Very reliable pistol.

I would do this^^^

And if you get bored in the future get the spring kit later.

I have the FFS setup in my target oriented 9mm full size and am really impressed with the improvement over the stock trigger. The gun has become my wife's favorite too!

In my full size .45 CCW, I installed the apex duty carry kit and find it to be a significant improvment over stock. I polished a few things within the action (using ceramic stones and a very light buff with a wool wheel on the dremel) and this setup has virtually zero grit, a clean break and is rock solid consistent and preserves the stock (safe) geometries in the striker/sear interface.

You can change the timing of the trigger, within reason, by enlarging the "hoop" on the trigger connector bar slightly. I set mine so there is .050 of overtravel between the sear releasing and the trigger bottoming out on the frame of the gun. I prefer less for target use, but for defense I like the reliability of this setup.
