Default Shield Problem?

I just got my Shield today. So, I cleaned and loaded some snap caps. The slide seems to get stuck on the frame. If you rack the slide it gets stuck and pops into place.

The rear part of the frame that touches the slide and sticks up the highest looks deformed.

I am going to call Smith and Wesson tomorrow.

Can you post a picture? If it is a little bit of polymer flashing from the molding process -- that is an easy fix.

I say - load it up and take it to the range. I feel any new firearm needs 200-300 rounds through it as a "break-in" anyway. If you have failures, there may be a problem -- otherwise, if it feeds, ejects, and goes "bang" with every pull of the trigger -- it is probably good to go.

I think this is what it is. But, it catches on the slide.

I will try to post a picture. I was thinking about filing it off.

No - that is supposed to be there... The cover plate at the rear of the slide is notched out to clear that "hump" -- unless your's has a little extra polymer. It's difficult to tell from the photo.

Let me ask you this -- how are you "racking" the slide? Are you pulling the slide to the rear and then slowly allowing it to move forward -- with your hand on the slide following it forward? If so, that is incorrect.

Pull the slide to the rear and let it go -- allowing it to slam home under it's own power.

I was able to get my Shield to remain out of battery by chambering a round in the method I described above -- slowly moving the slide while keeping my hand on the slide. Without seeing what you are doing -- I can only speculate... Certainly no offense is intended by my assumption that you're doing it wrong.

Regards.

flyandscuba,

If you dryfire and then cycle the slide does yours get stuck out of battery?

Also, if you drop the magazine and cycle the slide back and forth, does yours get stuck?

My other M&Ps do not do this. They seem very smooth. With the Shield, it seems like the slide and frame are binding.

There is a rub mark on slide from the frame. I called Smith and Wesson, and they are mailing me a shipping label.
I had another one come in today.

If they all do this, I am going to just buy another compact and wait for them to get the bugs worked out.

First I've heard about binding up. Yours must be one that has some glitch. They will set it straight, I know it must be a bummer though.

It is a bummer. But, the other one that I ordered just came in today.

I will check it out before paying. Hopefully, it will be OK.

If not, I am going to see if I can get another compact.

Good luck, you might consider a M&P compact, they feel pretty good in the hand, but I'll bet the other Shield will be OK.
