45 Caliber Shield??
I doubt that S&W would go down this path (but I can only hope)....
But, sitting here in my office -- I decided to see how well 45 GAP ammo would fit into the magazine for my Shield 40.
6 rds of 45 GAP fits nicely into the 7 rd 40 S&W Magazine -- likewise 5 rds fits nicely into the 6 rd Magazine.
The magazine body is wide enough to handle the 45 GAP cartridge, only the taper and feed lips at the top of the magazine would need alteration.
A 45 GAP Shield would be an awesome back-up option for LEOs who carry the Glock 37, being much slimmer and lighther than the G39.
Here's a pic of the 45 GAP 200gr Gold Dots next to a 7 rd Shield 40 magazine:
Here's a pic showing that the 45 GAP cartridge has ample room to fit into the Shield 40 magazine - the cartridge outside the magazine is a 40 S&W for comparison. The indentions on the sides of the magazine would need to be lessened, and the taper and feed lips at the top of the magazine would need to be slightly enlarged:
Given that the 45 GAP's maximum SAAMI pressure of 23,000 psi is well below the 40 S&W's maximum SAAMI pressure of 35,000 psi -- I am left to conclude that the safety of a 45 GAP Shield is definitely acceptable -- and I expect the lower pressure would offset the higher bullet weight to create a similar shooting characteristic (comfortable and controllable).
In a shield-sized platform, the 45 GAP is everything that a 45 ACP would be. Therefore, I believe a 45 GAP S&W Shield could certainly compete in the marketplace against the Springfield XD-S in the venerable 45 ACP. 45 GAP ammo is more plentiful and price-comparable to 45 ACP (actually less expensive from Georgia Arms) now that 10% of the State Law Enforcement Agencies have adopted the cartridge for their duty weapons.
I know that I am not the only non-LEO who likes the 45 GAP cartridge -- and carries either a G38 or G39 as a CCW...
I'd buy a 45 GAP Shield today -- if S&W would make one! Anyone else interested??

I would consider buying a Shield in 45, either GAP or ACP.

I don't know about GAP, but I would snap one up in ACP.
GAP ammo and guns don't seem to be a big seller. Heck, .357 Sig seems to be a bigger seller and you hardly see those.

I would take one in 45acp over the XDs. My guess if it were to happen, it will be a good while.

I think it will happen. The personal defense market is just huge right now and that is one segment that smith still needs a pistol in. But we'll see it once the shield fever dies down, to revive excitement and to get those who bought a shield to buy another. Smart business.

Your right, let the sale of the current calibers settle & Boom...
S&W proudly announces the introduction of the newest in the M&P Shield family the 45 acp, America's cartridge. Same slim compact design, only slightly bigger to handle the powerful 45, with 6+1 capacity & an extended 7 round magazine included.
Sound about right? I can't wait

Sign me up for a .45 acp. I will look at the XDs but don't think that I will like it as well as my Shield in 9mm.

I agree that if S+W is planning a .45 ACP Shield they may have planned to wait until the initial 9 + .40 rush slowed down, selling as many as possible in those calibers before introducing the .45 version. It would have very little competition except for the XDS. I had heard there were some delays with Springfield getting the XDS out into the marketplace. Is that still the case? If so, S+W may wait until the XDS is more readily available. Then they might want to have the .45 Shield out there as an option for those customers who would buy EITHER an XDS or a .45 Shield. (They know that a lot of us S+W degenerates will buy a .45 Shield when they bring it out no matter what else we already own!)
I am definitely on the list of those who would buy a .45 Shield as soon as they became available.

I plan on getting a Shield once they are available at LEO prices. I image when, not if, they release a Shield in .45 ACP, it will be flying off the shelves just like the 9mm and .40 S&W. Guess I'll have to save up for the .45 ACP Shield also. Definitely. The SA XDs .45 looks nice, but the Shield in .45 will be the next great S&W release. Can't wait.

Why do you think you NEED a 45 Shield? With today's modern ammunition, the 45 has been even overshadowed by the lowly 9mm in some bullets!! Wonder how long it will take to empty a mag compared to a 9? Makes a HUGE difference when engaging multiple targets. Especially if they are shooting at YOU!!

Everything except cost of the ammo and availability of the ammo. Ever try to find both practice ammo and carry ammo in .45 GAP at your local Wal-Mart? Yes, I know, you can mail order ammo, but it is still very pricey.
There is a reason that most gun manufacturers do not offer pistols in .45 GAP or .357 SIG - they just do not sell very well.
Unless you are a "one-percenter," buying .45 GAP ammo might just bankrupt the shooter.
I prefer to buy 2,000 rounds of 9mm, thank you!

I NEED ANY gun in .45ACP . I don't buy into the propaganda from 9MM lovers that it is equal. "Bigger holes make deader souls". A 9MM MAY expand. A .45ACP will NEVER shrink. Most police departments have abandoned the 9MM for .40 S&W. While that is certainly a decent cartridge, I shoot the .45ACP better than any other caliber.
If multiple targets are shooting AT me, I am either having a Vietnam flashback, or I need to vacate the premises IMMEDIATELY. I don't carry a bunch of ammo pouches full of extra mags. And I don't get paid for "vermin control" in my home town. I have no radio to call for backup and no backup would be coming. I don't get paid to get into Miami shootouts any more.

I think the FS = Full Size M&P. If I wanted a small 45 acp, I would be looking for a CS45 to be my CS9's big brother. In second place would be a Glock 36. It's acp for me (you could not give me a GAP - I don't need a new caliber to keep up with and to stockpile).

Same here. I believe if S&W did do a .45 ACP Shield, they would be on constant backorder.

I thought that might be it but it doesn't have doodly squat to do with a compact handgun. I have a Glock 30 but wouldn't hesitate to add a .45ACP Shield to my collection.

40 cal mag drop
S&W can not even get the 40 to work! I would hate to see failure rate in 45.
They also will not own up to the problem, get an XDS !!

The .40 has been out 3 months, mine works... This kind of thing is to be expected with new guns, XDS is seriously hard to come by and FYI they're having issues too, both are new guns.

How big is that Shield magazine??? I don't have one or I'd post a picture of what I think they should come out with.. I bet you could fit at least ONE of these bad-guy-stoppers in there!

I think a Shield in 45gap would be a waste of time for S&W. It's failed sale wise everywhere else and the only reason you see any LE agencies using them is because they were given the guns for free. Grant it, it fits smaller hands but the ammo is far and few between and more expensive than 45acp.

Shield in .45 ACP? Sign me up!
Might be easier to make work than the .40. The .45 ACP is lower pressure and has a less snappy recoil than the .40.
I have the .40 Shield and the 9c. Don't need another compact or subcompact, but not sure that I could resist.

Wow! Nice resurrection of a 4 year old thread. However, it is kind of interesting to read the comments about the possibilities of a 45 ACP Shield.
