Agencies that issue M&P
So I'm curious as to what police agencies issue the M&P. I heard the NM State Police switched to them from glock and the MA State Police switched from sig. Anyone else know?

My brother's department in NJ just changed over last year to M&P, he says he knows of several other local departments that are also changing over. His went from 4513TSW (and a few 4566) to M&P45 midsize.

Wish I could get one of those agencies to issue an M&P to me...they all said that you have to work for them first! Can you believe THAT??

Nice to know many pd's are using them as I am about to purchase one in 9mm. It tells me that they are very dependable guns.

From my Cop friends. S&W is GIVING NEW M&Ps to the departments & buying their Glocks. Want to get your product out into the hands of the PD with limited budgets? GIVE them new guns.

This is how, in the 1960s that Nikon saturated the newspaper press photographer industry. Gave away the cameras and made money on lenses and upgrades down the road.

This is also how Glock got the market cornered for so many years. If true, S&W is just copying Glock's own program. Nice to see something made in America give him a taste of his own medicine.
NH State Police switched right after they came out, I think the first State Police dept. to do so.

I don't care if Smith did what Glock did to get the business. if the gun is not reliable, they would have switched back to their reliable ones, no?
I love my 40fs and can't wait to shoot the new 45fs i just got. All i know is the M&P line has made me a believer, a stock holder and an M&P addict...2 firearms, 1 on the way for August, and selling golf clubs & RC Helicopters so i can get more!

At least one of the North Carolina departments did comparative testing with the Glock and the M&P. Main test was continuous firing, one mag after the other. The M&P sustained no damage from the heat that was generated. However the plastic rod on the Glock began to melt down.
Now, I can't imagine a fire fight where either gun would be so subjected, but the test was run and M&P won. The department chose M&P.

My cousin works for the Department of Energy. The switched recently from Sig P220 to M&P 45. The M&P beat out Glock, Sig P250, HK (not sure what model) in testing.

I have to bring in my own gun to the party. I was going to get an M&P but the waiting list was long and I needed a gun in a week so I got a G23.... maybe next year I'll get a M&P.

If anyone has a current list, especially with Oregon agencies, that would be helpful. I'm trying right now to get my department to at least let us purchase our own M&P to carry. Right now it's a choice of Glock or Glock.

They all do that. Glock, Sig, etc... Boy Sig musta had a heart attack when MSP went to S&W.
My dept is still Glock and thats fine but Westchester County Police and Probation dept. were mandated to S&W product line as a political statement dating back to when S&W went to the dark side of the gun debate.
They hates the Smith's now they all have M&P and are very happy with the switch over.

S&W had a cow when M.S.P. went to Sigs back in '89. It took S&W 20+ years to get them back and it was Sigs fault for sub par guns and parts.
There was a post on another board that stated Winthrop (MA) P.D. went to Sigs after problems with their M&P45s, which suprises me, seems the 45 line is the best of the M&Ps.

It's interesting that there are several departments that use the M&P 45. My guess was that they all used the 9mm or the .40 S&W. Can someone tell us why some departments chose the 45 over the others? I like the 45, so I'm not trying to put it down.

Milwaukee Police Department switched over from Glock to M&P .40 roughly four years ago after an officer was shot after his Glock failed. I believe it was determined to be a magazine issue.

That's right. The magazines were the old style without the internal metal bracing. The local WI State Forest Ranger showed me his issued Glock 22 with the metal inserts making them more rigid. That's supposed to eliminate bulging & the possibility of misfeeding according to him.
I'm carrying a former MPD M&P 40 that a PO friend of mine bought back after he was issued a brand new one. They're already on their second issue.

salt lake city tested m&p's but didn't make the switch, the officer I talked to said he wished they would have. the m&p's passed all the tests, they just decided not to. something about the pistols they use are working fine and didn't want to go through the hassle of changing over, including holsters and what not.
Their loss

The Glock FML mags were out by 1994 (likely 1993) so there is no excuse for a NFML magazine to still be in front line service four years ago.
It's a $20 part, change them every so often for goodness sake.
