California M&P Shield

Has anyone seen a picture of the M&P Shield that just got approved for sale in California? I am curious to see what changes they had to make to the loaded chamber indicator.

panamajack310 07-05-2012 11:12 AM

Hey, I heard the Shield for the Comifornia list was a single shot shield with loaded chamber indicator that was red, fixed magazine, flag sticking out of the bottom to make it impossible to carry concealed and an alarm that screams when it leaves your house..LOL

All kidding aside if you look at all the requirements that California has it will probably also have to have a manual safety, magazine disconect and some other feature. Here is the link to the CA gun requirements

12125 thru 12133 Handgun Safety Testing - Dangerous Weapons Control Laws - Bureau of Firearms - California Dept. of Justice - Office of the Attorney General

My brother who is a LEO in San Diego is so frustrated with the gun laws there that he is conteplating on moving to a different state. stuff that he wants he cant get down there. he's reasoning for why a lot of brands or models are not available is that CA is not a big enough market for the gun industry to make CA compliant modifications to their firearms and still make a profit.

Maximumbob54 07-05-2012 11:15 AM

Wouldn't they just have to add the mag disconnect? It already has an external safety. Or to they require more than the window for a LCI?

I think all it needs is the mag disconnect.

Your brother should look a little more into that. LEO's can buy just about any non-compliant handgun in California.

He goes to shoot are civilian ranges a lot and just doesn't want the hassle of having to inform people that he is a LEO if he shows up with some non-CA compliant firearms.

 NObody cares. There are plenty of "off-roster" pistols on the range. Sounds like he wants to move anyhow (don't blame him).

Maddmax 07-05-2012 06:11 PM

Maybe they are waiting on that "May Cause Canser" lable Calif. sticks on everything.

M&P Freak 07-05-2012 06:17 PM

Or the "Do not eat" sticker.

Maximumbob54 07-05-2012 06:41 PM

I don't know. A sticker with "Warning: Contains lead" might be kind of fun.

ZZZ Californian

I was born and raised in California and was happy for the most part. My early years were in SoCal and when I graduated H.S. I moved to the Bay Area. Not a bad place in the early '70's. But slowly but surely things just kept moving the wrong way and in 2000 I told my wife were out of here and we moved here to Idaho. The only problem with the move was I didn't make it about 10 years earlier! Tell your brother to get out as soon as he can. It's not going to get any better and believe out or not it can get worse! Good Luck and Shoot Straight!

I believe that the LCI will have to changed to something like the Ruger LC9, so that you can detect a loaded round in the dark. Maybe it will have a night light, Ha Ha!

blujax01 07-08-2012 04:07 PM

You all know that Smith & Wesson is located in Massachusetts.

The Shield is not available in its home state and if what I heard at a gun store in Foxboro is true, probably never will be because S&W doesn't want to go through the hoops to make it "Massachusetts compliant."

M&P Freak 07-08-2012 04:52 PM

What a sad state of affairs. America, land of the free, home of the brave.*

*Except in California, Massachusetts... :(

djames7726 07-08-2012 10:58 PM

CA & MA

Wouldn't the Massachusetts version of the Shield be the same as the California version? You might want to check the approved handgun list and see if they have approved it. California just approved it on 7-2-2012.

Fortunately for me I live in a free State (Ohio) but was visiting Mass and got into the conversation at the Bass Pro Shop.

If the M&P Shield is authorized it's not yet been published. The latest list on Mass.gov is May 2012.

Note that there is not one Colt handgun on the list!

Hey, Airbus just announced plans for an A320 final assembly line in Mobile. Maybe S&W can move there, too.

djames7726 07-20-2012 12:12 AM

Found it

They added a picture of the California approved version of the Shield on the Smith & Wesson website. Just as I thought< they added a LCI just like the Ruger LC9.

Higher MSRP, $469.00

1fly2ty 07-20-2012 10:19 AM

It will probably be a single shot with no removable mag!! lmao! Is there any intelligent life left in Goofyfornia.

VMaxSplat 07-20-2012 10:48 AM

Guns of the #1 nanny state... Makes me want to puke.

konertjm 07-20-2012 10:56 AM

Everything appears the same except the loaded indicator. Also appears that 9mm only is available, no .40.

M&P SHIELD - Smith & Wesson

Also has a mag disconnect for people to stupid to operate a semiautomatic pistol... Maybe the Kalifornia laws were written so that their stupid "leaders" wouldn't shoot themselves if they use on of the compliant guns.

BTW, the loaded chamber indicator is hideous.

M&P Freak 07-20-2012 11:17 AM

Why did S&W comply with this requirement? It's embarrassing. Just write CA off as a total loss and refuse to do business there.

Easy for you to say if you don't live in a compliant state. I'm glad they do.

Agreed, If all manufacturers of any product that stupid states like CA & MA etc... have some crazy compliance law would just say screw you to them, perhaps it might wake people up, to vote out the idiots that come up with this lunacy.

Agree. Terrible design, but likely the best they could do given the requirement. Wonder if it interferes with the sight line.

djames7726 07-20-2012 08:55 PM

In another post I read about people using nail polish to paint in the logos on the Shield. I think if I ever get one I may use some black nail polish to paint in the letters on the top of the LCI.

With that added top fin, they just might have to rename it to the Dolphin for Calif.

mlapaglia 07-21-2012 12:52 AM

THe Manual for my Shield, Fired in April I believe, had a picture of the alternate load indicator. It must have been planned for a while. Thankfully mine is not the "fin"

BrianE 07-21-2012 01:45 PM

A friend of mine was just in a LGS in MA and they said it'll be available in 1 month, but didn't specify any further. He had one in the display, but couldnt sell it...

djames7726 07-22-2012 02:42 PM

Patience

The owner of my LGS said he may get some Shields in about three weeks from now. I am on his waiting list. The S&W website says they should be available in California in October.

mag318 07-23-2012 11:12 PM

And I thought Illinois was bad, hmmm actually it is, just not as bad as CA or MA.
