Unhappy TulAmmo...never again!

This morning I went to the range up the street from where I live and took with me both my 45's as well as my M&P Shield 40 and full size M&P 40.

I have recently put Tru Glo sights on both my 45's as well as my fullsize 40 but it is Tritium so these glow at night. Having fired the 40 yesterday after work it shot beautifully and where I aimed, so I decided to try out my 45's new sights.

While I was highly accurate with the new sights I did encounter one problem with the second fullsize 45 it jammed on me after about 15 rounds. I released the magazine and tried to reopen the chamber and eject the offending round, but to no avail.

I placed the weapon on the range bench pointing down range with the breech still closed one of the workers at the gun store came down to help and although he got the chamber back open with some degree of difficulty and trying to use a pocketknife to remove the round he then took the weapon upstairs and with the proper tool removed the offending round from my gun and showed me the swollen round which had basically blocked the barrel.

I then put the remaining ammo of 11 rounds back into my range bag and put both my 45' in it as well. I then went and shot without any problems 100 Remington JHP 180 through my fullsize 40 forgetting all about my little Shield.

I will never buy this ammunition again for fear of damage to my barrel and will take my gun to the gunsmith to be sure no permanent damage was done to my 45.

I've never had any problems with TulAmmo until recently.
The very same thing happened to me when I was trying to shoot it
in my Bodyguard380. No, the laser screw was not loose. Stupid me kept clearing the round, with difficulty, until I finally had to get the range gunsmith to clear it for me. That was it. Won't try that again in that gun. I did e-mail TulAmmo and they wanted to refund what I paid for that box of ammo. Haven't received the check yet.

I shot about 500 rounds of Wolf (I know, it's not Tula) in my SA Milspec 1911 and it was very dirty. After that, I said never again. had lots of stovepipes, FTE, etc.

We see a lot of it at our range. PITA because we have to pull out the magnet when cleaning it up. Mixed results from shooters. I think they must put a lacquer on the cases that builds up in some chambers causing malfunctions.

Well I guess it has been said before but if not I will repeat it and that is that shooting most 40 plus caliber weapons is more expensive. So I tried to cheap out and got embarrassed doing so. I think I have learned my lesson about using cheap ammo on a quality weapon, kinda like digging a fifty cent hole to plant a $25 rose it will probably not work to your satisfaction.

You mean cheap Eastern European ammunition made with a combination of lead, steel, and who-knows-what-else they swept up off the floor didn't perform as well as you expected?

Well I'll be ...

I wouldn't say all inexpensive ammo is bad.... I paid $24.50 per hundred for .40 from tactical ammo and it has been just perfect. Clean, never a problem, accurate and inexpensive.

I think the best way to save on ammo is to buy it in bulk.

Thumbs down

I had that brand of ammo stick in my Sig P6, in the same way yours did.

I'd shot some Tula 380 thru a Walther with no problems, but the 9 mm stuff
turned me off on steel cases. No more for me.

Yes... Tula is steel cased Lacquer coated, which has raised problems with many pistols. Steel cased ammo doesn't expand the same as brass and depending on how hot the chamber gets, the lacquer can soften and gum up the chamber (even though Tula claims that it doesn't).

While it may work okay with 'NATO' weapons, many reserve 'Commie Ammo for Commie guns'.

Tula ammo has been eating breech faces with primer-flow. Glock even now tells their instructors to advise against Tula ammo. I have also seen numerous high-end 1911s with breech face erosion from Tula primer-flow.

In short, don't run it.

The whole steel case and the like is a non-issue for combat guns and not the reason I stay away.

I will run Wolf, which is the same company. But the Tula brand has issues for sure.

Regards,
Greyson

I have never shot a single round of Eastern European ammo in my life. The savings aren't worth it to me.

I don't know if it's so much a problem with the lacquer as much as it's a problem with the steel cases not expanding as constantly as brass does.

When a brass cased cartridge is fired, the case expands filling the chamber, usually preventing much build up of gunk.

A steel cased round doesn't have this expansion and allows a bit of blow by that can build up, resulting in a FTE now and then. The removal process, if not done correctly can damage the chamber, which is why a lot of gun manufactures are starting to state they won't warranty a gun if used with steel cased ammo.

As a general rule, steel cased ammo is fine but may require much more frequent cleanings of the chamber, especially if it's dirty ammo to begin with.

I agree with this completely. I just don't understand why anyone would risk using the "cheapest" ammunition available in a gun that they have invested a lot of money in. For the record, I like saving money too, but I would rather shoot fewer rounds than use questionable ammo.

I've been called a "gun snob" and a "brass elitest".
I'm sure, I've been called a lot of other stuff, but those are two things I will wear like a badge of honor.

I shoot ammo that I have reloaded or from a recognized US factory.
Have I had problems? Sure. I got a "squib" load years ago from a box of Remington .38 Special. The bullet made it as far as the cylinder gap...jamming a revolver.

I did the same thing with one of my reloads. I acted as though it happened all the time. Took out a range rod and tapped it back into the cylinder. Folk around me thought I was nutz.

Didn't mean to go off on a rant...short story...no Russian ammo in this house...

I only shot 50 rounds of it through my shield 9mm. I didn't have any problems but reading these post maybe I'll not risk it anymore. yikes!

I shoot it sometimes in a series 70 1911 with no problem. Also 1000's of rounds through an ATI Titan without a hitch. I have a Polish P 64 that doesn't like it and only works well with brass cased ammo.

If you need inexpensive ammo, try Georgia Arms. They have bulk ammo very reasonable. All brass cases.

I recently bought 2 50 round boxes of tula 40cal. Didn't have a single problem. However, 100 rounds probably isn't the best measuring stick.
