No pics yet... but I just ordered Dawson fiber optic sights for my M&P22. I'm going to also try an experiment. I ordered a set of Talon Grips that I'm going to try to install on the M&P22. The Talon's are sized for a standard full size M&P pistol so I'm thinking that they should probably fit without significant need for modification.

Default looking for mods

Hi, I was looking at the talon grips too. Did you get the rubber or granulated. Post pics when you get them done and tell us what you think. There are youtube vids with the talon grips on a M&P9 ,the size is almost identical should fit just right.

The Talon grips showed up today... I did not get the granulated version so I got the rubberized grips. Matter of fact I just finished installing them a little while ago. Also tried an experiment. I had picked up a bottle of Krylon Short Cuts paint in Glow Orange. So..... I grabbed a toothpick and changed the color of the front sight to Orange.

Talon Grips:

And new Sight picture:

Not bad... but I'm hoping my new Dawson Fiber Optic front sight shows up before my next planned range visit.

Looks like a good fit, do you feel a difference in the grip. I like the sights too, did you drill dimples in the rear sights or just put two dots on the blade. Like the red dot for the safety, glad I saw your picture, wasn't sure where to put it. Thanks for posting the pictures, there are alot of M&P22 owners out there waiting for something to do to their guns. I will post pics as soon as I do one of these. Thanks again, Jesse.

If you try adding the red dot for the safety, quadruple check the location you plan to place the dot. One of mine is slightly off so it's visible at all times. Not a big deal to me but annoying nonetheless.

The Talon grips fit OK... and yes it is a much improved feel than stock.

Place the red dot in front of the thumb safety not behind it so when your off safe it shows and it's totally blocked with the safety on. I would drill a smell dimple to add the paint to. george

Well my Dawson sights arrived today...

Installing the front sight required a bit of filing but only took about 15 minutes to install. But oh my... what a tedius task fitting the rear sight was! I would swear I was filing the front, rear, and bottom of that dovetail for the better part of an hour...

The DP Rear sight is actually new... it just showed up on Dawsons web site in the last few days. I ordered the wide notch sight available for M&P models.

DP Rear Sight Smith and Wesson M&P Fiber Optic Inserted Fixed Rear Sight with Wide Notch, Match with .180 or .160 Tall Front Sight #018023 Detail Page

In one respect it sort of annoyed me when I noticed that M&P22-specific sight showing up on their web site. The other day I spent 15 minutes on the phone talking to one of their people about which rear sight to get for my M&P22... who never once mentioned that they were about to release a M&P22-specific rear sight. Oh well... it's installed and seems to work.

One thing that impressed me about the Dawson sights, by the way, was that they came with extra strands of fiber optic in both red and green. Very thoughtful of them... Kudos to Dawson Precision!

I would be annoyed too! I was wondering with all the fitting you said you had to do if it was a regular M&P rear sight. The person on the phone should have sold you the correct one or at least told you to hold off untill they were "officially" for sale! The person you delt with must not have known their product line very well. But at least your happy with what you have so thats saying something I guess.

Default NEW SIGHTS AVAILABLE FOR THE M&P22

These new sights became available for the M&P22. Thought I'd give you all a heads up.

Smith & Wesson M&P .22 ATS Sight

I'm still debating what to get for mine. So far I've seen the HI-Viz, Dawson, these and the 2 dot rear from the 9mm version.
For you that have put the rear 2 dot sights from your bigger guns on this one, are you satisfied with them, without the elevation that the factory sights come with, are you still able to sight the gun in. Thanks,

I also like the round barrel lug I see on some of the guns. I think on the org. barrels as they came from the factory it would be easy to hit tap or somehow mess up the front of the barrel crown. This would seem to protect that and gives it a more aggressive look. Link on where to get this part and how much is the cost please? George

JaPes,
Please supply the link "URL"part number of that screw on barrel lug. I love the look of it. think it makes the weapon look gnarly and much more aggressive then it really is. Love the look! George

That is a suppressor adapter. Some M&P22s came with one, most did not. All will accept one.

Here is a link to one of the many manufacturers : GEMTECH

eBay often has several at great prices.

Default X-TREAM GRIPS ON M&P 22

Great grips, feels good, these are the rubber texture for the M&P 9 & 40 and they fit the M&P 22 perfect.

Here are some more links for one of these, I checked and any of these made for the Walther p22 will also fit the M&P 22, so you just search for Walther p22 thread adapter and find one you like. I also like the look.
WALTHER P22® 1/2x28 tpi THREAD ADAPTER WITH THREAD PROTECTOR by:

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/GNS-057

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EWK-Arms-Wal...item35bbb9c2bc This one has also been tested and fits the M&P22

http://www.tacticalinc.com/walther-p...mbo-p-433.html here is a review on the last one, he used it on a M&P22, so we know it fits. (I purchased this combination for my S&W M&P 22 and it was an excellent choice. The flash hider looks great on the gun and the added weight all but removes muzzle rise and recoil from a gun that is already a an awesome shooter. At the sale price of $37.99 this was a great deal.)
If you plan on just using it just for the mean gnarly look, ebay has alot of them in the $20 range. Hope this helps

Just browsing and noticed a few of you removed the thumb safety. Is it very hard to do? Is there some sort of write up or information on here about the process?

Oh and the two tone looks great!

Default thumb safety

Found this on another site, At the rear of the frame, drive out the roll pin. Pull out the internal frame far enough that you can pluck the thumb safeties off. Just make sure the the lever the thumb safety is attached to on the left side is in the down position. And the factory thumb safety plugs from S&W do no fit the M&P22. Different specs.

Mods so far are just removing magazine safety and cutting off thumb safety levers. Would like to machine a new bar and make plugs for the thumb safety sometime. Going to paint bar style sight on rear sight blade today.

So here's mine so far. Mag safety removed. Stock thumb safety bar is in place with the thumb levers cut off. I painted the rear sight. I did it real quick so I can see how I like it. If I don't like I can remove the paint easily. If I do like I will remove it and sand the area a little so the paint will be more permanent. And I'll probably spray a little clear on for protection.

Air8,
I'm not they type to cut off my thumb safety just yet as I;m not trying to conform to another M&P in a upper cal yet.. It conforms nicely to my Colt 1911's with the safety as is so I like it there.. I am looking for more ideas for my rear sights and you have come up with something interesting to me.. I had seen others use white paint on the hole rear blade and for me I think that would be just to much white.. but your way is interesting I see you left enough space on each side of the white to equal the same sight picture of the front sights when centered and on target.. Let me know how well you like your setup when you use it for a bit.. Thanks for the ideas and pictures! George

I understand about the thumb safety. I'm still new to shooting somewhat, in that I don't have 1911's yet. My other semi autos don't have safeties so that was my reasoning.

The rear sight is basically a copy of my Kahr CW9. I love the bar-dot sights on that one a lot. But the Kahr rear bar extends all the way down to the bottom if the sight blade. And I may do that on this M&P if things feel right. But for now I just did the little insert as you can see.

I'm pretty confident I will like. LoL.

The "dot the i" sight picture is very nice.

Regarding the thumb safety on the M&P22, I found it to be not 1911 like at all. Every 1911 I've ever used had a very positive thumb safety, where you could feel it engage/disengage. Also, they take little movement to operate. On my M&P22, the thumb safety was ambiguous at best. Was it on/off? Pull the trigger to find out! Not good. Also the levers were cheap flexible plastic that interfered with my grip. I had no problem deciding on their removal.

Now, about the magazine safety. Why remove it? These guns are not to be dry-fired. I use the mag safety as insurance against unwanted dry firing. My M&P22 is stored with the hammer cocked and without a magazine inserted. And for the record, I never rely on mechanical safeties to "be safe". With a gun that is used for personal defense, I can understand the desire to remove a magazine safety. On a .22 caliber pistol, not so much. Just my $0.02

Ron, Ya your sure right about my 1911 my officers mod. Colt I just got done looking at her and that safety is sure a positive sure and a short click on and off.. No mistaking it! Ya I still love this gun! But darn near ripped off my fingers off cambering a round. Wow what a stiff set of recoil springs in that sucker.. Maybe somplace will come out with steel safety levers or someone will start machining them and sell them for the M&P 22 Not so sure I would want them until I made up my mind about them 100%.. I agree 100% about leaving the mag safety on the M&P 22 if it was use as a defencive weapon that may be another story IMO BUT IT'S 22.. I have 2 gen 3 S&W guns with a mag safety in 9mm and .45 and I left the mag safety alown in them as well. I think it would be wise in a legality situation in a shooting.. I just can't at this point take off my flimsy plastic safety levers on the M&P.. Oh should be hitting the range with any luck tomorrow! We'll see if my attention to detail on the breach face has a positive effect or defect on the gun.. George

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why I removed the mag safety. I just felt the challenge of figuring out something mechanical.

We have done a few drills(with the 9mm's) where a co-shooter calls out "THREAT!!!" while the other guy is doing tactical mag changes. And so we fire, one handed, before having the chance to load. Then load and get back to firing. IDK. I knew the mag safety would prevent that one drill.

If your counting rounds fired as you must be to know your down to one in the chamber.. Or know your mag is not empty when you eject it, hence knowing a live round is still in the chamber.. Ok but in the real world when the shi# hits the fan that's not going to happen. In any case it would be a liability in a shooting a mod-ed out gun that is.. Not to mention in a accidental shooting they would hand you your head.. Yes even with your buddies at the range in you back yard in the woods.. I was all for not having a mag safety because none of my Colt .45's 1911's or my other guns had one.. I then picked up two 3d gen S&W guns 6906 9mm and a 4566 .45 and this M&P 22 .All have mag safeties built in.. I see no reason to remove that safety I believe with it intact it can and will get you out of more trouble then it would get you in.. OK just IMO.. I will carry the best gun for the task at hand.If you dumped your 10 or 12 round mag in the first place your in deep poo poo! And you better have back up! Gun makers are trying to make guns better and safer in every way for the people who use them and for people that don't .. My I ask your age? I'm 55 maybe that's why we see things so different.

Nice to get to know you! Your at the right for learning. Try not do to many mods on your own with out a lot of research as very small mistakes can be catastrophic failures that can cause death. Learn slow. Main think is be safe think safe and follow all the general rules of gun, " hand gun" safety. Nice to have you aboard! George

I bought my MP22 as both an inexpensive (ammo) plinker, fairly accurate target gun, but primarily as a trainer for my full size MP45. They both are set up identically with ambi safeties, mag safety, ambi slide stops and are close enough to the same size (but not weight) to work exactly the same. Drill on the MP22 and you can rest assured that your good habits will carry over to the 45. I like this concept and it works!

Slide would have to be on the pistol. Rack the slide back, remove the factory thread protector, then install adapter. That is of course, assuming the o.d. of the adapter is bigger than the barrel opening in the slide.

I am HAPPY to report the bar-dot sights work well for me. I'm going to go ahead and do some prep work and paint the bar down the whole rear sigh blade. Now I know how to properly adjust the rear sight, LOL, the M&P22 was shooting spot on today. Previously it was shooting waaay high and I started adjusting the sights...in the wrong direction.

So on first day I had to move rear sight to the right slightly cause shot groups were landing a few inches left of center. And had to lower the rear height cause shots were printing high.

No failures or stoppages of any sort. Think there is only like 500-600 rounds so far. I did have one round today that did feel underpowered. Still hit in the correct place but I heard it and felt it.

Anyway now I'm on to painting the rest of the rear sight blade. But for now here is a pic as it sits now. Only the rear insert has the bar painted on it without prepping the surface.

First pic is about at arms length away for a kinda true sight picture....maybe. LOL.

I think you found the answer for me. I like that sight picture. Simple and does the job. What did you use to paint, did you tape it off or just free hand it. Thanks, Jesse.

This was just a quick deal to see how I like it. That is just paint for Lexan RC car bodies. I'm getting ready to remove that and fully prep the rear sight for the full bar. I'll just tape it off really well. Then lightly scuff the area and apply paint. I plan to cover it with this nitro fuel resistant clear coat and see how it holds up to gun cleaners over time.

IDK. We'll see. LOL.

This feels and sights in really well now. Better than earlier today. Somehow I ended up with slightly wider lower part than the insert. Down the road I might redo with measurements instead of just eyeballing it.

It's also dang hard to get a good centered photo from the cell phone when standing back from the pistol. LOL.

I do wish the rear sight was a full width blade instead of an insert that is offset from the rear of the actual sight. If lighting is off to the side then there is almost a shadow over the insert part of the sight. The very rear lower white bar stays perfectly visible at all times though.

But this will be a good fix for now.

Truglo M&P FO sights work with a bit of work. The aluminum slide is very easily marred so be careful. I maske mine off good but still needed a touch up pen. File both the front and rear sights where they make contact with the slide. Of course, attempt at your own risk. If ur not comfortable try to find a good gunsmith to do it for you.

30 minutes to do the front. 5 for the rear. Dont shave the front too much at a time. You are relying on a reasonably snug fit and loctite to hold this in. If light tapping with a brass punch isnt moving the sight, back it out an shave. Repeat until you can punch it centered. If the slide is getting marred (you notice the shine of aluminum following the sight) stop, anf have accordingly. The front overhang of the new sight was just a little lower than the stock sight. Filed this down and install was straightforward from there. Huge difference from stock. If only I had enough to Vtac tritiums

Shot 700 rounds straight yesterday. Sights held up nicely. I needed to adjust the rear a hair as my groupings were 2 inches left(same as stock sights when I bought it). I love it

I just pulled apart the MP22 to remove the safety levers and pulled the assembly too far and the bar came out along with the metal plate on the safety lever bar. If I want to remove both levers is the bar still required, does the metal plate have to remain to engage the trigger lock? How does the plate go back in?

Also, it seems like there is a small spring that came loose, about 1/4" long and 1/16" in diameter. Does the small part of the hinged trigger have a small spring in it? It seems floppy. Edit 1/6: the spring does go in the trigger. I needed to remove the roll pin and reinsert the spring.

Just bought the new M&P22 and recently added two more 12 round mags and a Gemtech threaded barrel adapter! I love how this gun shoots! Here are some pic's:
