Default Shield-not for me

Handled one today Very nice gun but it is BIG. I already own a full size M&P9 and to tell y'all the truth-the shield is not that much more concealable than the full size for my purposes. Wanted to buy one in the worst way, but I think I'm gonna pass. Think my next purchase is gonna be one of those take down 10-22's

I have never handled one but judging from the pictures and magazine articles, I agree, they do seem a little large for their purpose.

I bought one when they first came out, and put about 100 rounds through it. Good gun, I just can't warm up to plastic semi's no matter how hard I try. Glocks, Sigma's, XD's, a Shield, shoot, even a Hi-Point. They just don't interest me.

I sold the Shield for what I paid for it. The other guy was happy as a clam.

I really like the M&PC. IMO a perfect solution to the CCW size and capacity equation. If I feel the need for a skinny single stack I'll pull a 3913 out of the safe.

I believe that you'll find that even the take down version of the venerable 10-22 isn't very concealable either....

I haven't had the opportunity to handle one, but I would like to. I looked at the Beretta Nano and it seemed like a nice gun, but from what I read the Shield seemed nicer and looked nicer too. I got kind of antsy and wanted a small nine. I started reading reviews and found the Kahr CM-9. I wasn't really keen on Kahrs, but the CM-9 seemed like the best quality pocket 9. I found a nice used one for sale by an individual. I bought it, cleaned it and took it to the range. I am well pleased with it, so far. After about 100 rounds (25) of which were Federal 124 gr. Hydra Shocks, I'm still impressed.

I'm really wanting to like my Shield 9mm, but the stiff trigger and just the way it seems to be too skinny is making me not like it as much as my 9c. The Shield is definately better for CC but I'm just not feeling it. Maybe a handall Jr. and a Apex sear will help but I was really hoping to not have to add money to a gun I paid MSRP for.

I like my Shield, however I'm just like you. My baby GLOCK fits my hand much better and has a lighter trigger.

Not getting rid of my Shield because it fits a niche need, but it isn't my go-to carry gun.

Hey Cage, what's the appeal of a take down 10-22? I don't get it.

I agree. I looked at a Shield and found it to be too big and heavy for comfortable pocket carry and too small for a range/house gun. Just not a good fit for me. I'll still carry my LCP with good ammo.

I love my Shield for a CCW. I recently bought a M&P .40c as another HD gun but found it was too similar to my Shield. For me, the Shield is more comfortable for a CCW then the .40c so I sold. I just came home with a full size M&P .40 (209300) to use as home defense and range gun.

There's just too much hype about the shield for me. It's like a movie that you feel like you've already seen before it is released. I'm looking at J frames for CCW. No hurry, I don't carry very often. This is Houston, there's way too many people walking around that need to be shot. I'll let the LEOs do it.

Might need more practice. Mine won't make em mad (it isn't a 380). It'll made em just as dead as a FS.

Got rid of my G26 when I acquired my 9mm Shield. Much easier to carry IWB.
Now, I just have to install the Apex Shield Carry trigger kit.

My Shield is like a toothpick in width compared to my FS M&P and like a micro compared to the FS height and length. I'm really not getting how you feel they are close to the same size for concealability. You did mention "for my purposes" ,but I'm not entirely sure what that means....

Just took these quick comparison pictures

I love my shield! It shoots very accurate for me. I did install the APEX DCAEK and it made a world of difference. I have a bunch of other carry 9's but the shield definitely has it's place in my carry line up. If the grip is too slim for you, I guess try out a grip sleeve. If you still don't like it, I'm sure you can sell the shield Very easily.

If I can weigh in, I like the take down for the obvious reason...the ability to break it down into a very manageable carry size for travel, SHTF, etc.

The ability to leverage all my existing 10-22 mags is a big plus, as is the very nice carry case it comes with.

Then there's also a host of new customization options that I expect to come along, in time.

Other than that, it's a 10-22...why not pick up another?

I was looking at the takedown 10/22. I run coondogs and for me it will be a lot better weapon than a regular rifle (too hard to handle with dogs on the lead) and a pistol (handier but too loud for me and young dogs).

Not to create a slight thread drift, but can these be safely carried with the safety off with a round in the chamber? I'm a lefty, and if the safety MUST be used with a loaded chamber, it's pretty pointless for me.

Yes it can since the FS and compact models come without safeties. I'm used to thumbing off safeties and have an Apex sear and my DIY striker block rounded job which is why I choose to use it on the Shield as well as my FS model. Like a Glock, just make sure your finger is off the trigger and nothing get's caught in the trigger guard when re-holstering like a shirt end, jacket, holster strap/flap, etc..

Over the last couple of decades, I've carried a S&W M642, KelTec P3AT, Glock G23 Gen2 and Ruger LC9. Still have them all BUT my Shield 9mm is just the ticket for me - Small, slim and adequate caliber. Installed Talon grips and the Apex DCAEK in the Shield and it is now perfect for CCW - All it needs now is night sights. My house guns are a Glock G17 and Remington 870 with extended tube...

For 40 caliber weapons I own a full size M&P40 and a M&P40Compact and a Shield40.

My Avatar is a M&P40Compact and was my EDC but has since been replaced with the Shield40.

As far as concealment I was more concerned with comfort the 40 dug into my spine when driving while the 40Shield does not, now I am using a Crossbreed Super Tuck for the Shield, but just ordered a Minotaur MTAC for it which I carried with my 40Compact.

I am not a large man but conceal very well IWB at about 4:30 with both the 40Compact and the Shield even more so. I am 5'6" and 140 pounds.

I personally like my Shield and would only pocket carry with cargo pants and that is not my style, so to each his own!

I have FS M&P's, a compact M&P and a 3913, and am trying to be patient while my new 642 makes its way to me by UPS.....

I will get the Shield when it's available at LEO pricing ($335), but not before. I really don't need it, and I sure won't pay more than I have to....

I do wish it was smaller. Compared to an M&Pc, it's a bit thinner, but you pay for that by carrying a lot fewer rounds.

Yeah .. I am not getting his reasoning either. The Shield is MUCH smaller than a 10/22 TD. I own that too and it is better quality than standard 10/22's currently being sold. Both have their place. You might want to add a PMR30 to the mix.

The SHield is the first subcompact I have owned where I do not feel like I am "compromising." I shoot it well, and even at 15 yards (the furthest my indoor range goes). I have 1250 rounds thru the first and 450 rounds thru the second.

I sold a PX4 9mm fullsize to pay for my 2nd one. But, everyone has their preferences. I would suggest trying to shoot it before ya write it off - just by holding it.

I never would have bought my 1st if I had not rented one...

And, the size to me is small - look at it compared to the Kahr PM9... Not much bigger:

Te other advantage that the Sheild has over the m&p c is the grip is longer and for me that's a four finger grip with the shield instead of a three finger, pinky hanging, grip.

Not really a nay sayer-the shield is a great feeling little gun ab=nd if I didn't already have a full size M&P9, I would have bought it in a heartbeat. It's just that l already owning the full size, the shield isn't small enough to justify buying.
In boat talk, I have a 19' whaler so it didn't make sense to buy a 17' one but it did make sense to buy a 13' one.
Now as far as the take down 10-22-I just like take down rifles. When I pull the pieces out of the case, put them together and aim carefully and take out thygat plastic bottle at 50 paces, why is makes me feel just like that guy in "The Day of The Jackal" putting together his rifle and trying to take out DeGaulle-only I don't miss
