My First Gun - S&W Shield 9MM !
Well, I got the call yesterday from the LGS (very surprised) that ONE Shield 9mm came in. I think was 10th on the list, but the people before me probably didn't answer their phone... they just go to the next person on the list. Keep that in mind if your on any lists out there.
Also want to give a thumbs up to the people on this forum. I would read this forum daily and learned a lot, especially since I'm new to guns. A lot of very knowledgable people here.
I looked at Glocks, specifically the G19 but the handle was way to fat for my wife with small hands and it didn't have an external safety. The Shield 9mm seems to fit perfectly and am impressed with the range reports on accuracy. Plan on field stripping the gun today and cleaning it before firing. After all, it says to do that right there on page 30 of the manual

Congrats on your 1st firearm purchase!
As you already said, field strip, clean, and lube your Shield according to the instructions provided in the manual. Part of this is to visually inspect the firearm for any obvious flaws and defects.
When I was new, it was challenging to discern what was normal from abnormal. Just look for anything that is obviously out of the ordinary. If you have any questions, ask. The forum members here are very helpful.
Also, try and remember what your Shield looks like when field stripped. When you field strip it to clean it the next time, look again. After a while, you'll calibrate yourself to what is normal and abnormal.
I wish you safe & enjoyable shooting at the range!

Nice choice on a first gun. My 9mm shield is an awesome shooter and easily competes with larger guns in accuracy and control.
Get some spare mags while they're available here, as they have been very hard to find anywhere since the gun was released.

Good choice for a first pistol, don't make it your last. You might look at a quality .22 auto also. If a 422 fits as well in your hand might be good to have, remember ,how you practice is how you will react in an attack in danger.

Welcome to the forum and also to M&P made by Smith and Wesson an American company that started in 1852 (160 years ago). They proudly make their weapons and take great care of their customers, as any company that produces a weapon that you would trust your life on and with your M&P Shield9 you should be comfortable that your weapon will do its part if needed.
These type weapons were designed to take abuse and keep on working as intended for the military and police, with demanding specifications and being former military this is one reason I own mostly S&W M&P's (8 of them, 9 counting my M&P15 556 NATO carbine)!
Glad to see that you read your manual as many people do not and they may have difficulties field stripping and reassembling their weapons but I do not believe you will be one of those.
Have fun at the range and follow all safety practices and get some training from your local ranges, owning a concealable handgun is a huge responsibility!

Welcome & Congrats on your first! The Shield is a good first choice. Some training would be of great benefit, as some others have suggested. Enjoy & Shoot Safe

Congratulations, may I suggest getting a quality holster. It will enhance the safety and enjoyment of your new gun. There are some nice pocket and belt holsters as well as IWB holsters starting to become available for the Shield.
