Crimson Trace linked a story on it's Facebook page about a website tha leaked a story about them introducing green lasergrips at the 2013 shot show and would be available mid 2013. However the story also stated the first models will be Glock & 1911, I heard nothing about M&P, but being that lasergrips fit great on M&Ps I can't imagine them being too far behind.

I can't make up my mind if I want a laser or not. What are the pros and cons?

The pros should be obviously, CT lasergrip doesn't really have any cons per se. Basically, everyone you'll talk to will recommend to continue training with iron sights as well, easy to do since there is a master switch that will shut the laser off to allow you to do this.

The pros are, point & click, really that simple, you can shoot from the hip with "laser" accuracy, you can keep both eyes open, etc... The current drawback is that the red lasers are hard to see during the day, so it relegated the laser to be useful in lowlight situations exclusively. Green lasers are a game changer, as they're easy to pick up even in broad day light. Previously the technology was too large to make compact, but not anymore. The one downside is they still require much more energy than red lasers, thus decreasing battery life significantly. So the one issue you'll have is to make sure you change your batteries frequently when the green lasergrips drop, but to me it will be worth it, and worth the wait time, assuming the price isn't much more than what the red lasergrips are (since they're already on the expensive side).

Back in Nov / Dec last year, CT had the green laser grip for the M&P on their website. They indicated that availability would be Feb this year ('14). I had bookmarked that page and when I went back to it this morning, I got a "404 error". Meaning that they removed the page from their site.

So I called CT and spoke with a "Molly". She indicated that they were having production problems and that IF the unit will be available at all, it will be at the end of this year.

The item was apparently going to have the catalog# of LG-660G.
Here's the deal link where CT removed the page.

Disapointing...

According to Crimson Trace, who I called, the lasers that mount on the trigger guard don't have a master switch.

Hopefully they will get past their production problems and start offering the green laser CT laser grips for the M&P line. I see that CT is currently offering green laser grips for many Gen3 Glock handguns. If they can get a similarly styled model to work on the Glocks, then it shouldn't be too awfully hard to get a working model for the M&P line.

I don't see the advantage of green laser with tradeoff of less battery life and more expensive to gain daylight advantage. why would you use a laser in daylight?

Agree!! We are taught even as kids that red means stop & green means go. If I see a RED laser, I automatically think "gun". If I see a GREEN laser at night I may think, "hey, what's that?"

There are tactical applications for lasers where their use in daylight could be very beneficial. That said, and having used both red and green lasers in various environments ranging from bright daylight to very dark (new moon outside), I will say that I think green lasers have some advantages and some serious drawbacks.

Like any other tool, if the user understands the good and the bad, and makes an informed decision based on what they need the tool to do, then I'm all for it.

Here's my thoughts on red vs green lasers:

1. Neither is very visible in daylight. Green is very clearly "more" visible, but unless you are using it in a very shaded area, anything beyond ten to 15yds is extremely difficult to pick up.

2. Both work very well indoors and in low light, which is, in my opinion, the main "go time" for the laser. Green gives no advantage here and, in fact, the units I've seen and used can have some disadvantages. At close range, the green is much more likely to refract off airborn particles and "draw" a line back to the shooter...Not a big deal but if searching, as in law enforcement, or checking your house in a home-defense situation, this can be a disadvantage. Also, the green lasers I've seen and used tend to have a much larger and more pronounced "spill" to the laser beam, causing an almost spider-web effect around the dot. Red lasers can exhibit this if broken or dirty, but the green seems more susceptible.

3. Battery life...Green is generally lower.

4. Environmental Factors: Many green lasers have a narrower operating temperature range compared to red lasers. I've done testing in very hot conditions and got my green laser (Streamlight TLR-2) to shut down, but the light was so hot (sitting on the dashboard of a radio car on a law enforcement range attached to a "blue gun") that I couldn't hold on to it... I doubt a light would ever get that hot in a holster. I don't see this as a big factor but I do plan to do some cold-weather testing. It just hasn't been that cold here in CA...Even though I live in the mountains where it occasionally snows. I may have to do a freezer test or something.

Apparently higher-end "direct-drive" green lasers (or something like that...I forget the terminology) don't suffer from the temperature issue, or are at least less effected by it, but they are also more expensive.

5. Price. While it's hard to put a price on something that's possibly going to help save our lives or the lives of our families, the reality is we don't all have infinite funds. Given the various performance advantages and disadvantages, barring special use situations, I'd probably recommend the red laser as it works just as well as green in low light, doesn't have some of the (at least perceived) disadvantages, and is cheaper, allowing funds to be spread to training, ammo, etc....

As to lasers in general...I'm a big fan. I have several laser units and have owned multiple others on guns that I've since sold. I carried multiple laser-equipped handguns during my law enforcement career in the field and am aware of several shootings on my department where lasers were used with positive results. I have done extensive testing including various timed drills comparing the use of the laser and iron sights and have worked with multiple agencies, manufacturers, and trainers to develop an advanced laser training curriculum for my department. The key to lasers is the same key as any other tool...One must learn to use the tool correctly or expect less-than-ideal results. Training is imperative.

I'm slightly color blind, and red lasers disappear on anything other than a white surface. I can see green lasers all day long, but red is pretty much useless to me.

That's interesting and something I hadn't much considered...Is this in lower light conditions (to include decent indoor lighting) or bright daylight?

If it's in any condition, to include low light, then that is something I'm going to have to remember.

Thanks for posting that!

I guess I am a big kid at heart, I love lasers.

I have quite a few high power lasers (up to class IV) just for the fun of it. I have Red, Blue, Green, Yellow and IR. The kind of lasers that will light Cigars, pop balloons and cut electrical tape.

So CT and LaserMax both get in depth visits from me at the SHOT show.

This is not a traditional green laser where the laser diode is actually a high power IR (100+Mw) and then converted to green <5Mw output. This is why batteries get chewed up so fast.

This new CT line of products use a new Direct Green Diode and therefore has similar battery life to the Direct Red diode lasers that we have become used to over the years.

Also this brings pricing into line with the more common red laser grips. Just like the first "cheap" red laser pointers were hundreds of dollars and now sell for $9 at the checkout lines, the Green diode will rapidly drop in price.

The delays are availability of the new Direct Green diodes, not a production issue at CT.

As stated Glock and 1911 are being released first. M&Ps are next followed by SIGs.

Even in the pitch dark if it's pointed at a dark surface it goes away. If I concentrate I can make out very faintly. Low light conditions make it worse.

Thumbs up CT Supply Chain issues

Thanks Colt for the insight. I don't see a conflict between "Molly" at CT indicating they have had "production issues" vs availability of a particular component (green diode). Lack of supplier components = production issues.

Thanks again...

Welcome to the Forum

While having a component supply shortage does cause trouble for your production line, it is not a flaw in that production process in and of itself.

The way it was worded in your original post could have meant anything. Now it is clarified.

I'm not sure it is. Your claim that its a diode shortage by CT's supplier could be the issue. If you're on the CT procurement team with insight into the cause of the purported shortage, then I'd say your spot on.
Otherwise, the verbiage "Production Issue" came from a CT employee, (Molly). Perhaps she has more knowledge of the issue than us forumites.

I have a CT LG-452 (GLOCK Green Laser Sight | Laserguard LG-452 | Official Crimson Trace) and it does have a master on/off switch. Maybe upcoming models don't?
