Thumbs up New M&P 22.... AWESOME!!

I have held up on buying the M&P 22 for a long time, and finally gave in.
Well, I went to the range with a box of Federal 550 value pack, and a couple of boxes of Mini Mags for backup, in case the Federal didnt work. Well.. guess what?.. The Federal worked just fine, and I even shot the whole box!
As for the range report, I was shooting ragged, quarter sized holes at 7-10 yards. I was very happy with that.
As for the 550 rounds fired in this first session, I had (3) rounds that wouldnt cycle the slide. Not bad eh?
I cant wait to take it out again! What a great way to save money, and still have fun!
On a side note, after I cleaned and lubed it,after the range session, I was wondering, if the recoil spring only goes in one way?
I first installed it, and the slide was binding. I then turned it around, and all was well??
Also the buffer ring that sits on the recoil rod has (1) indent (flat) in it. Does it matter the position?
Thanks for any responses, and if you can, go buy one of these guns... I just hope it lasts a good long time!

Welcome to the M&P22 club, it's good to see you're enjoying your new M&P as much as we enjoy ours. As for the recoil spring guide, it only goes in one way. Just look inside your frame and it's easy to see how it fits. Your pistol should give you years of troublefree service. These are truly fun pistols.

Amen. I ran a handful of rounds thru mine last Friday. 7 magazines worth total. 7*12. No FTF/FTE. ran perfect. Agreed not many rounds, but oh what fun! S&W/Walther did good here.

Still happy with my 22. More so now that I just bought a FS 9, so the 22 is great cheap practice for it.

I started with the 9fs, then purchased a 22. The M&P 22 is the perfect training companion. I'll warm up with the M&P 22 to work out the kinks, then transition to the 9fs.

I also use the M&P 22 to introduce new people to the shooting sports. It's an easy firearm to shoot, and the manual of arms mimics it's center-fire brethren perfectly. Once the new shooter is familiar and comfortable with the M&P 22, it's easy to transition them to the 9fs.

I handload/reload ammo, and have significantly lowered my center fire ammo cost. Even though, the M&P 22 is still shot often. It's nice not to have to police spent cases.

Make sure the buffer ring is in the right way. The side with the groove facing towards the tip of the brrel so the spring sits in that groove. I really like my M&P 22 also.

I like what you did to your sights. Give us a range report when you get to use them and tell us what you think. I like that dot the i sight picture.

The Gun looks better than I expected. I considering the M&P Shield 9mm instead but the 22 looks worth it if your at the range often. Cheaper ammo

My good friend has the full size 9mm M&P. He uses the medium backstrap and the feel is near identical between the 22 and his full size. The triggers are slightly different. His has the APEX so reset is shorter. He does not have the RAM though, so the positive reset on the 22 is tons better.

It was fun the other day shooting them back to back.

I cant' wait to get back out and try these sights out. Unfortunately gonna be raining in my area on my two days off tomorrow and Saturday. I'm listening and watching the storm roll in right now at 2320hrs.

How does the trigger take up and reset compare to the M&P9?

The reset on my FS9 with my RAM feels nearly identical to my M&P22. Take up is also very comparable. I'm very happy with how close these two weapons are. I also carry my FS9 with a medium backstrap. I've tried all three, and keep coming back to the medium. According to measurements, the 22 is somewhere between the small & medium I believe.

After four times at the range and about 1600 rounds of Federal 550, I am very impressed with this gun! Kudos to S&W, for making this fine gun!

Default M&P22

I got mine from Bud's two months ago and have put at least 500 rounds through it of various ammo--zero malfunctions, zero misfires and deadly accurate. I bought mine on the excuse that because it is same size as M&P9 I would use it for practice---cheaper shooting---I do that but I still shoot my 9MM just as much too.

The one thing I did not really like were the sights because they presented a different picture from my 9mm which is 3 dot tritium. So what I did was get a set of 9mm standard white dots ---and installed them on the M&P22. The rear sight just slipped on and tightened the set screw. I had to file the front sight just a hair---slid it into the groove---punched it in place with a small hammer and a small piece of Oak-----put a boresighter into the barrel----zeroed the sights with the boresighter. No damage to either sights or slide.

Went to range and it is shooting perfect with the same sight picture I get on my M&P9. Don't need fancy tools just some patience and common sense.

I looked at getting a couple of different 22's for target shooting. I have a M&P 45 and a Shield 9 mm. The M&P 22 seemed like the right fit for saving some money and still staying with the M&P line of weapons. I find that shooting the M&P 22 and then changing to either of the others is like putting on identical pairs of gloves. The shield is a little smaller in hand and the 45 is heavier, but not creating any problem what so ever. I will get another set of sights for the 22, or at least the rear. Other than that, life is good

Default Boresighter

I use a Bushnell small caliber boresighter---sort of looks like an icepick. I have been using it for a few years on my .22 and .17 rifles and my S&W 22A1 target pistol. Real simple to do and if done carefully will put you within about an 2 inch at 50 feet when you fire your first rounds. You can pick one up for less than $30. It comes with various adapters but I only use the smallest ones. Too long an arm to work on snub nose barrels. Can't get more accurate because dot size at 50 feet is larger than many think.

Just put into the barrel securely--turn red dot on-----aim at flat surface about 50 feet away-----look at 6 o'clock center sight picture--note where dot is and then drift adjust sights---as needed. Do it at least 3 times to doublecheck

You cannot adjust elevation unless you have rear adjust sights----It was not necessary to adjust elevation on my M&P 22---the trick was to use both front and rear white dots from another M&P because they will both be matched for elevation. The standard white dot sights have a larger white dot than the white dot on the M&P22 front sight.

If you also have a red dot laser on your rail--you can match the laser with the boresighter with the 3 dot sights and voila----even before you ever fire the weapon you can be confident that your first shot will hit what you intend to hit.

Well another 550 pack shot today. I am up to 2150, in the shots department. I still love this gun! I am learning to live with the occasional underpowered round. Out of 550 I shot today, I had about 20 underpowered rounds (Federal 550 pack). To be continued...

I think the quality, is not as good as it once was, but it still isnt bad. Shooting 550 rounds for $20, is the way to go!

I switched from the Federal bulk to Winchester bulk due to price and a little more powerful rd leading to less FTE'S. The Winchester 333 rd bulk pack is $9.99 at walmart, had to drive around town to find a shooter friendly Walmart, some have almost no stock and some are fully stocked, so for the same price of the Fed 550, I get 2 boxes for a total of 666 rds for $20. Same price and over 100 extra rds. I've gone through nine boxes this month, thats 2997 rds for a little over $90, I love my M&P22, I'm always looking for a bargain.

So how does the Winchester compare to the Federal 550 overall? I have been paying $18.98 for the 550 pack.

It's not as nice and clean looking as the federal, but it is powerful enough to cycle the slide every time. The only thing that I didn't like was that some of the bullets were a little loose in the brass which caused a stovepipe. This happened only about three times out of three boxes 999 rds. All the other rounds shot without a problem. With the Federal I was getting alot of underpowered rounds, but the price was good until I found these whose price was even better. I don't think that I would have a problem with the Federal, now that my gun is broken in. So, now I am going with the best price. I have also used the blazer bulk which was good and powerful, I didn't like the wax surface that was on the bullets and they left my gun very dirty.

I just bought a S&W MP in .22lr. I was impressed'
much better quality than my Walther P22, even though
its made by the same company, Carl Walther.

Have not shot it yet but will soon, i have several hundred rounds
of .22 ammo to break it in...

Welcome to the M&P.22 club....great fun gun. Great to hear yours is doing well also. Haven't heard anything bad about this gun. The buffer ring installs with the round side down. Doesn't matter about the spring.

I love mine. Two trips to the range, 100 rounds of CCI each time. 100% so far. Only thing I don't like is the safety levers and the spongy trigger pull. It's light and accurate. So now the Colt .22 and S&W 617 stay in the safe because not only is it a great .22 to shoot, it's free practice for the .40 M&P.

I've been looking at one but wish there was a production version without the thumb safety. Still looking though.

Just got back from the range with my few-week-old M&P 22 - loving it!

I must disagree about the Winchester white box ammo - doesn't work worth a **** for my gun. CCI is flawless. Need to try Federal 745 and Remington GB next.

See my thread in this forum re. bulk ammo for M&P22s. Some interesting trends in the manufacturer's spec data. FWIW.

Another 550 pack through her today. I am up to 2700 rounds now. Still battling with some weak ammo. I had to hand cycle the slide about 30 times today. I think it is a bad lot of Federal 550. I have about 10 boxes with the same lot number, and they have been giving me more trouble than the first few I shot with a different lot number.
I know its the ammo, because I can run Mini Mags, and never have a problem.... Oh well, for the money saved , I guess its worth it.

Stay tuned for more!

I also have been having more issues with federal lately than ever before. I got a bunch of the 525 blue pack from gander over the winter that were caked with wax and did a number on my guns. I have bought some auto match recently that has had underpowered rounds.

Hey DeeBee,
I had some "bad" federal .22 ammo also. Sent them an email and they bought it all back. Gave me full refund even for the box I shot . They were very cool about it. I even had the check before the ups guy picked up the remaining boxes. If you're unhappy with the stuff, let 'em know. Ron

I also have the same experience. I've been relatively happy with my P22 just having gotten used to a periodic FTF or FTE (not common but every so many mags). Now with the M&P22 mag after mag after mag with not a single ammo issue using various Mfgs (excluding golden bombs). It is so nice just being able to shoot.

On the other hand, the ammo issues on the P22 gave my son experience in malfunction drills on a regular basis. He now does it naturally, so I suppose there was a small silver lining. As soon as my 2nd son's hand is large enough for the M&P22 frame, the P22 will be traded off.

Put another 300 rounds of Federal bulk today. I am up to 3000 rounds through her. I used a different lot this time, and she definately ran better. Only about 6 or 7 weak rounds.

A really clean well oiled gun will help some too!! The gun should get a little less fussy with more use..But the magic number is 1280 for the ammo it likes! The Winchester's are a bit hotter round then the federal. G

You could eat off of my M&P But I have so much Federal bulk, I am good for the next few years. I probably should have tried the Winchester ammo.
Mine already has 3000 rounds through it, and its not getting "better", but I still have to believe its the ammo.
My first box of Federal 550 I ran through it only had about 5 weak rounds, now it seems like I am getting much more. I guess it is just random?

Just picked up one of these myself. Put 900 round thru it this weekend. Nice piece and I love the low cost of shooting. I tried Rem thunderbolt, Federal and CCI. CCI was the nest with the Thunder coming in second. Forget the Federal. Too many Fresh.

Point is put a few hundred rounds of some hotter ammo through it and it should become less fussy.. CCI or Winchester Most here use cci Mini Mags for break in of the M&P 22.. Seem to help loosen it up.. then maybe your Federal will be digested easier. George
