Tarnished Rear Sight On M&P40c
My rear sight has been like this since probably the second week of ownership. I dont think its rust, it almost looks like brass. I especially dont think this is rust because I wipe it down every night, because its my everyday carry. Anyone else experience this? I have also tried scratching it with a dental pick and nothing comes off like rust would.

Have you tried a good gun cleaner on it? Hoppes #9 will remove brass, and a good bore cleaner solvent will remove it if it is brass.

I mostly have been using Rem Oil I have some Hoppes Number 9 but haven't attempted. After researching on this site I'm going to switch to Weapon Shield, but I'm still not sure its rust or brass. I don't mind it if its not rust. I'll try some Hoppes, and I'm gonna get a magnifying glass while I'm out.

You didn't say if you bought the gun new. If you bought it used, that could be brass from a sight pusher. If it is, the gun cleaner will take it right off.

Yep bought it new. Tried Hoppes and a dental pick, its still there. I tried a brass brush and rem oil before only to get the brass of the brush on the finish. Once the excess brass is removed the original mark it still there. I'm beginning to suspect that it is a defect in the finish on the site, and I didn't notice it when I bought it. I'm sure Smith & Wesson will fix it for free, but I'm in no rush to send it out since its my everyday carry, and I would have to replace it with something else. The mark doesn't really bother me it gives it character. My only worry is if it were to because a problem area and start to rust.
