Default M&P help for lefties needed

I recently purchased my first M&P, a FS 9. The main deciding factors on going with this over a glock were my very knowledgeable friend, who owns a bunch of glocks, recommendation, how much better it felt to hold, and the fact that it was advertised as fully ambidextrous.

As soon as I got home with it I moved the magazine release to the right side. I went to the range to zero at 25 yards without issue, I only loaded my magazines with 5 rounds each during this. This next week I attended a pistol class where most evolutions involved two ten round mags. I instantly experienced a ftf after 4-6 rounds fired. This ftf was caused by the follower getting caught in the magazine retention notch and then not properly feeding the rounds. This happened for the entire three hour class. Happened almost every time with both of my mags and one of the instructors, we even tried to file down the front left corner that was getting caught, didn't help. Needless to say it took away from the class some when I was having malfunctions with every mag.

When I got home and investigated further I realized that this was all caused by switching my mag release to lefty. There was a post on this
forum or another about it and how getting first gen followers would fix it.

I called S&W cs,, explained my issue and the resolution and he sent me three followers in the mail. Originally the rep said he was not aware of this issue and had to check on it. When he came back he said ya that happens and sent the followers. I told him that I was disappointed that this issue is not posted anywhere for these weapons and it should be and he said that was above him but he'll run it up the chain. I don't think this was an adequate response. These pistols have been out long enough that this should be resolved better than this. What would have happened if I never went to the range and had to use for sd and had this failure. The weapon is either fully ambidextrous or not and with this issue I don't think it is. Now that I have the old followers I have not had an issue but this important piece of information should be included in the manual where it tells how to switch the mag release.

I am sorry this happened to you, nut glad it was taken care of. Another reason someone should get completely familiar with a weapon before they trust their lives on it. I am a lefty and have a 40c that is about a month old and have run a few of the compact mags and a few of the full size mags through it and haven't had one problem. I do have the mag release reversed BTW.

Thats why its not in the manual. It sounds rare. Especially since the first rep was unaware of it. Sorry for the it happened to you, but thats why you practice with the firearm you carry. So you know it works and you get sufficient with it. If you don't practice and need to use it in SD I would hate to be your neighbor or anyone in the area.

I'm glad it's rare and doesn't happen to everyone. I just thought it was weird that it happened in all three of the mags and almost every time. I wonder if there is a difference between the 9 and 40.

It is a known issue but the fact is we're an underrepresented minority. Since the beginning of time us port siders have had to deal with the uncaring righties who run this world. They smacked our wrists for writing naturally, laugh at us while watching us using a pair of scissors, put us on the wrong side of Christ, heck even the word "sinister" translates to "left-handed."

I feel so oppressed....

Sorry it happened but glad that you are back up and running. As far as the above comment, you should never delegate an unproven (unfired, untested) firearm for self defense.

I've got 6 M&P's...all converted to lefty mag release and I've never had this problem....ever. Just lucky I guess.

yeah bud, sorry to hear you have this problem. My FS .40 has had thousands of rounds through it, switched lefty, with no problems at all.

I've posted before myself about this. I have three M&Ps, two full size (9 and .40) plus a 9C. The two full size pistols never had a problem with the catches reversed, but the 9C had issues with followers hanging up on the mag catch.

To make a long story short, I found a lot of difference in the amount of distance the metal blade of the mag catch sticks out from the plastic body. The two full sized catches did not protrude as far as the one from the 9C.

I ended up buying one from SSS with the intention of grinding the blade to match the two full size pistols. The one that arrived turned out not to need any modifications and works without a problem in the 9C.

If you don't want to send your pistol into S&W and like to experiment, the catches are pretty inexpensive at SSS and they have cheap shipping.
