Default Shield - issue racking locked back slide

I just got a used Shield 9mm and put 150 rounds though it.

Twice, I had this problem after I inserted a magazine with the slide locked back: when I racked the slide and let it fly, it did nothing. It didn't misfeed a round; it seemed to just stop moving forward.

What I did to clear it was to drop the magazine, release the slide, insert the magazine and rack the slide.

Thoughts? I cleaned it afterward and figured I'd see if it reoccurred next session.

One other note. I let someone else shoot a mag. He had an issue i didn't: he racked the slide, but didn't fully let it fly, and got a misfeed (twice)

I'm no expert on this stuff but if it were me, I would send it in to S&W ASAP and have them check it out.

Was the magazine fully seated? Some guns will hold the mag in place without releasing the slide lock.

I am guessing the slide lock spring is working correctly, holding the lock down until pushed up by hand or when pushed up by the empty magazine tab. If it is not working correctly, remove the locking block and trigger and check the spring.

Last week, I did my cleaning after the first session with my new-used Shield 9mm. Today, I fired 100 rounds of PMC and did not have any issue with the slide not moving forward after inserting a mag and racking the slide.

I did however have a mag drop twice on the extended mag. I wonder if my hand putting pressure on it pulls it down a bit. I didn't have it happen with the shorter mag.

Had the same problem , not fully pulling back on slide with 8and 7 rounds ( full loaded Mags) many FTF .. Had to work on pulling slide back fully with right hand while pushing forward on back of grip wih left hand. 200 rounds later no FTF.
PS Problem don't happen with 1 Less round per mag.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... A very few have troubles and thousands (???) of us never have a problem at all. Some NEVER complain (on the site) if they do and just get it fixed. I have one of the very first out and Z-E-R-O PROBLEMS along with tons of others that haven't. The way you talk. IF it were that bad,S&W would have had a recall by now. GEEEEeeeeeeezzzzzzzze !!!!!

I understand what you are saying....but it seems like more people on this site who have problems with the shield far outweigh those who don't have problems. Couple other forums I am a member of are reporting the same thing.....makes me wonder....

Seems like an epidemic industry wide at times.

Check out the S&W Bodyguards (380). Same sort of thing, yet I just bought one of them too.

Check out the Springfield XDs, which is a direct competitor to the Shield. Seeing the Shield problems, I started to think the XDs might be a wiser move. But then a quick look over in their forums shows huge issues with critical components, many more problems, and many more affected.

Glock, Sigs, they all have buyers with problems. I'll stick with USA made, and hope for the best.

BTW, I wouldn't even call this thread a problem thread. A new gun had something happen, and it fixed itself. Might have been operator error? Might have needed slight break in period? I remember when I bought my first Hi-Point 40 S&W and shot it with my brother carrying his 9mm Glock and Colt 1911 Gold Cup Match. The Hi-Point had a couple FTF or FTE with the first couple mags. Brother responded, "don't worry, that is normal, and the Glock required a few hundred rounds through it before it cured FTF FTE problems". (The Hi-Point then proceeded to easily outshoot his Glock and was right with the 1911 for accuracy). Now, after several hundred rounds through the HP, never any more FTF, FTE or other issues. A $150 USA made gun that always goes bang. Other trips with brother had several failures with his hi-end 1911, that forced it back into range bag, unusable that day, and back to local gunsmith again for service. So I would not say the Shield is a worse choice than other guns, based on threads complaining about an issue that someone has.

These threads and postings, to a large part, explain problems and ways to solve them. The reason it seems so many people are having problems is because those that are not having problems have no reason to post. Other than the Shield mag drop problem, there are few other actual problems with the Shield. I have read some threads about possible problems, but most of those were operator error and or unfounded. Then we get those people that are always saying they are so glad they did not buy "so and so" since it has so many problems.

I bought the Shield 40 in May. It had the mag drop problem from day one. S&W paid for the shipping and gave me two extra mags upon its return. I duplicated the mag fix on my original two mags. I now have four mags and a perfectly working gun. As with anything new, it may have a few bugs in it, but they will get worked out. S&W has stood behind the gun and made it right.

I am extremely happy with my Shield. Now even more since I have learned, from this Forum, that the 9mm barrel fits the 40 slide. Some have tested the swap and it functions fine. Now if we can only find someone to start manufacturing the 9mm barrel, as S&W lists the M&P barrels as restricted to factory install only. Glad I bought the 40 as the 9mm to 40 does not work. Only the 40 to 9mm will work.

Never had a Shield problem, never saw a Shield problem (several others in my Department have them), don't expect a Shield problem. Any platform can have issues; small or big. Some are mechanical, some are shooter error or inexperience. I don't make them out to be more than they are. If I encounter a problem, I have the option of trying to repair it, return the weapon to the manufacturer, or rid myself of the firearm.

I purchased a Shield9 on day of issue and a Shield40 a couple weeks ago. No problems/issues with either. I am happy camper.

Same here, happy.
As for the original thread here, you bought a used Shield and that mag could have been dropped. I would have S&W check it out.

Sure. I have another 8 rounder I just got and will give the pistol more break-in and testing this weekend perhaps.

I want to get an M&P 9c also, for a bigger thumb safety and capacity.

Yup, I read where you had another one coming in. I know I have somehow engaged the mag release on mine a couple of times and not realized it. Things that make you go, hmmmmm.
