Default Video proof 9mm Shield in .40 Shield slide/frame

Ok guys i had a little time today to make a short video. Forgive the ****** quality of my cell phone video. Anyways, this is showing you guys that the 9mm Shield barrel does fit in the .40 Shield slide/frame. All together, you can shoot 9mm with it all day long. Many people have asked for it, so here it is. Now the world knows the truth of the matter. If you guys have anymore questions, feel free to ask and i'll see if i can help.

Default 9mm barrel in a 40

Have you shot it with the 9mm barrel in place?

Yes I have plenty of times. It performs just as it would if it were all a complete 9mm. No hick-ups and no problems.

Thanks for the video. My question is since the 40 barrel won't fit into the 9mm slide, is there some extra clearance/slop in the fit of the 9mm barrel in the 40 slide, in that same area where the 40 barrel hung up in the 9mm slide? I would guess there is a little extra clearance, but since you have fired the 9mm in the 40 slide, it is not enough of a problem to affect the operation of the gun.

Yeah there is a tiny bit extra clearance when the 9mm barrel is in the 40 slide. You can actually see it a bit in the video. But since the spring keeps the barrel tense and the barrel is seated in the slide (in the front). All of this keeps the barrel from allowing any wobble at any place. So in this case, that tiny bit of extra clearance doesnt matter the least little bit.

Well I have been putting them through their paces. Both on their own, as well as the 9mm inside the .40 frame. Still I havent had any issues with either of them in any way. I still havent had a mag drop issue from the .40 either.

If anyone ever comes up on 9mm barrels for the shield, please let us all know. It probably isnt going to be any time soon, but hopefully oneday someone will start selling them. I have a few buddies that also want the 9mm conversion option for plinking on the weekends.

Because you can, and it works doesn't necessarily mean that one should. Probably why Smith doesn't sell Shield barrels.

S&W does not sell barrels to the public. Their parts list shows that sales of barrels are "restricted to factory trained armourers" only. However S&W does sell barrels to other gun parts distributors (Brownells, Midway, etc.), who in turn sell the barrels to the public.

Since the Shield is new and in such big demand, S&W is not selling the barrels to anyone, including the distributors.

I wonder if the 40-9 conversion Shield is as accurate as a stock factory Shield. My skeptical side says no. But to those who have fired it, what do you say?

Mine was actually more accurate than my factory 9mm (ive since sold my factory 9mm Shield. Since i have no need for it). But lets take into consideration that each weapon is different from one another. Not all weapons are identical, even if they are factory.

Very interesting thread. Thanks for sharing this information. I love having two guns for the price of 1 plus a barrel and magazine.

Interesting. Good stuff Smitty. I'm a little late to the party on this topic. I'm just surprised the differing size breech face, extractor and ejector never have become an issue. That is, I assume these three things are different with two different calibers.

They are actually all the same parts (per say). Which is why it seems to work so well. This is also true in the compact as well. Which is why the compact .40 can do 9mm and .357 with just a factory drop in barrel. There is a tiny bit of difference between the extractor or the ejectors, i forget which one. But much like the barrels. There isnt much of a difference there to cause a problem on the functioning of the weapon.

This isnt something that is totally new to S&W. It was just a new discovery as far as the Shield was concerned. The compact guys have been converting for much longer than the Shield guys. No problems have arose that any of us know of. So its pretty safe to say the Shield conversion should be as solid as the compact conversion.

If there were issues doing it this way. The compact guys would have found the problems long before the Shield came out.

I personally tested this theory for a few months before even posting this video. I figured if there was a problem somewhere, i was bound to find it. However, i never found any problems besides the .40 mags failed to feed the last 9mm round several times. This is why we've said before the .40 mags will work for 9mm but u will have less worries just using a 9mm mag. Some guys still continue using the .40 mags for the 9mm and dont seem to have any problems. Its just a personal choice from my stand point.

Very cool. Thanks Smitty. My first M&P was the M&P40c. Got it 2 1/2 years ago. Love the way it shoots .40 but good to know I can shoot 9mm out of it too.

I have both the 9mm and .40 Shield. I interchange them as my carry. I wouldn't think of interchanging barrels here in CA. Since serial numbers wouldn't match my permit and I had to use it, I would be in prison for carrying a modified weapon. Just something to think about.

I guess with current rebate the price of the barrel and couple mags would be comparable to a complete 9mm Shield

These are for the full size but they may have or coming out with the shield/compact sizes.

Apex has been promoting these for a couple years. I'm looking at 1 for my .40 > 9MM -- just haven't found the money yet.
