Default +P Ammo

Question for all,

I have 3 S&W pistols. 1911TA - 1911SC ans M&P 9mm. The user manual says no +P ammunition should be used in S&W firearms. My question is simple can they be used?

I may have mis-read my owners manual for my M&P FS 9mm, but I'm pretty sure it says +p is OK but will shorten life of the firearm. +P+ is what was forbidden by S&W.

I shoot em all and have been for years. Its all fine in modern firearms unless you have some sort of a Derringer type or something

I agree with 1meanZ on the +P ammo. I don't use or practice with +P in my Shield 9 but do keep it in my Sig 229 9mm. I feel the shield is built a little on the light side to be using a steady diet of +P ammo thourgh it. While the Sig is pretty much a full size gun and over built for the 9mm. I don't practice with +P in the Sig either but do keep a mag loaded with it in the home. But hey that is just me.

Your manual says it can be used but the gun may need more frequent service. +P+ should not be used.

I would add NATO rounds to the +P category.

I agree with posters. Occasional use of +P ammo will not harm S&Ws. I avoid +P+ ammo as my standard ammo punches right through the silhouette targets without issue.

I just purchased a 9mm shield and I also am trying to decide on a carry ammo. S & W seems to issue a disclaimer regarding the +P ammo. I suspect that should you have a problem, this is what they will point you to when they discover you have been using +P ammo.
With regard to +P+ ammo, they come right out and say it must not be used.
As a matter of interest, they are not the only gun manufacturer that holds these positions. It seems apparent that when you use +P ammo, you do so at your own risk. Also, this is something one must consider when deciding whether to buy a new or used pistol.
