Yes I would like to also know what barrel you used. There are many of us with the Shield 40 that want to buy a 9mm barrel. Yes I do know the 9mm cartridges will feed fine using the magazines that came with the 40's. With the right lighting the stamping on the barrels will show up good in a photo or video.

How about a video of shooting with the two different barrels. A good video "is worth a 1000 words (or 5000 typed letters).

The regular S&W Shield 9mm barrel can be used in a 40. There's another thread that shows a video of it being used by someone that bought both guns.

Is this for real? S&W doesn't sell extra Shield barrels. Storm Lake doesn't make them at this time and I don't know anybody else who does. Where did you get a barrel, or do you have two Shields?

Yes, but is it a Shield 9mm barrel or are you using one from another model like a 9c?

I wasn't a non believer. This has already been shown to be workable on this forum. I got the impression from your post that you had been given a barrel or purchased one. Thanks for clearing that up. You still cannot buy a separate Shield barrel from anyone.

I just do not see how this can work for an extended time. I assume that the breech face of the 40 slide differs in size than the 9mm breech face. the extractor must be different in the 40 simply beause the case is a different size than the 9mm. Also Loading 9mm rounds in a 40 magazine, I guess that would work but would u really wanna trust your life on that??
just my 2 cents

I may be wrong, but I think the 9mm magazines will work in the 40cal. There are a lot of people that have been doing this with the other M&P's. The storm Lake barrels for the M&P and the M&P compact are custom made . They are not factory barrels. If only we could get them to make barrels for the Shield, I would feel pretty good about it.

Yes the 9mm mags work perfect in the .40. I havent had any problems with either of mine. I continue using the 9mm in the .40 just to make sure no problems arise and if they ever do, i'll know about how many rounds I put through it before hand.

As for the 9mm rounds in the 40 mag. I have tried this also, and yes it does work. However, you will not see me using it like that. I'd much rather use it with the 9mm mag, as those are very easy to obtain. For the moment the barrels are the MAIN concern of anyone who's wanting to convert.

Just so you guys know, I have about 600 rounds through the 9mm barrel while in the .40 slide/frame. There is still no problems that I can see with either portion of the exchange. Regular cleaning and regular lubing, this thing keeps going and going.

I have also never experienced a mag drop in my .40 at all. I have heard many problems with the mag drops, but for me I have never experienced one. And this is using the .40 as a .40. Maybe it likes me or maybe I got lucky and got a descent one.

Default 9mm Shiled with 40 slide

I bought a 9 Shield a couple of weeks ago. Mine came from the factory with a 40 slide on it. Any idea if I can put a 40 barrel in it and have it work?

Are you saying you got a Shield 9 with a .40 slide with a 9mm barrel???
If it truly is a .40 slide, and not a 9mm slide that was wrongly stamped, then you should be able to use a .40 barrel. Probably need some .40 mags??? Anyone else have any ideas???

You mean you have "1" post, and u come up with something like this.

Come on man, we weren't born yesterday.........=-)

PS: My Shield .40 came stamped with a 7.62x39mm slide.

Sorry you do not believe me but it is the truth. I purchased the Shield new in the box and it was suppose to be a 9mm. The box says 9mm, the barrel says 9mm, but the slide says M&P 40 Shield. Sorry that I only have one post but never thought I had anything worth while to contribute until now.

Does it chamber a 9 or a 40?
That will give you your answer and if it chambers a 9 send it back to Smith to get your proper slide.
Mistakes happen on industrial levels, I saw a revolver on here yesterday that is a 337 in 38spl but was marked 331 which is a 32 caliber.
And c'mon people, give the guy some slack. If it is a true problem be helpful, not rude.
With attitudes like that I can see why he wouldn't frequent the Semi-auto forums.

Stuff happens. I bought a new Ruger Blackhawk many yrs ago that was marked (on the box and barrel) as a .357 magnum but came fitted with a 9mm cylinder. Ruger made .357/9mm convertibles but this was sold as a straight .357. I considered returning it but a Canadian Forces friend of mine (I was stationed in Canada at the time) provided me with a full can of CF 9mm ammo so I just kept the Ruger as is.. When I returned to the states, I had my local gunny fit a .357 cylinder and that Ruger is still providing good service after 40yrs. If I got a Shield with a mismatched slide I'd just keep it and look for a .40 barrel.

Just a little food for thought.......The marking of the slide itself is not the important part. The important part is whether the spacing between the slide and rear of the barrel is wider (like the 40). It could very well be a 9mm slide thats just wrongly marked (as it sounds).

Post a pic that looks like this, and i can tell you whether its actually a .40 Slide, or just a 9mm SLide thats been wrongly marked.

Looks to me like it is actually a 40 slide with a 9 barrel. My Shield 9 has a tighter fit at the notch around the loaded chamber indicator hole. You could get a 40 barrel and have two guns in one .

Not 100% sure, but I would agree. Excellent suggestion too, it you could find a 40 barrel.

Better yet, keep what you have and get S&W to send you a 40 barrel for your Shield.

Hrmm thats a tuffy, but IMO it looks like a .40 slide. I would say, look down from the top (as u are in the pic), and how much daylight u see between the sides of the barrel and the slide. The .40 slide is a tad bit wider and when u put the 9mm barrel in it, u can easily see the difference between them.......If its a .40 slide, all u should need is a .40 barrel. Kinda like everyone who has an actual .40 slide and .40 barrel, all they need is a 9mm barrel. Which ever way u look at it, as long a sits a .40 slide, all u really need is a barrel, lol

You can refer to my video, and get a general idea of what exactly im talking about. You can kinda see everything in the video.

I watched your video and looked at my shield and it really does not look like there is a lot of space around the peep hole. I also compared it to my full size M&P 9 and it seems to look the same. Any other suggestions?

Compared to yours, my Shield 9 has a much tighter fit. I still say yours is a 40 slide and a 9 barrel. Sorry for the photo quality, but I think it shows the fit well enough.

This is a very interesting thread. I hope the OP gets it worked out to his satisfaction. It does concern me that it appears that QC has taken a back seat. This thread along with concerns on a barrel on another thread makes me very glad, that I along with some of you, got one of the made before launch date Shields. It also just gripes me to no end for a new buyer to have these issues. QC must be the #1 priority, or the product line suffers as a whole, IMO.

Thanks for the nice video showing the 9mm barrel in the 40 slide. I have read the doubters posts and wanting verification. I have also seen the firing video. I am not at all concerned with the little bit of extra clearance between the 9mm barrel and the 40 slide. I have seen the posts of that being a dangerous situation. You have shot enough rounds through it, that if there was going to be an issue, you would have found it.

Now if we can only get someone to start selling the 9mm barrels. Thanks for your effort in these threads.

Bob

You did not reply to what size cartridge fits in the barrel. Thanks to Smitty's video the answer is easy. We know the 40 barrel will not fit into the 9mm slide. So what size cartridge fits into your barrel. If the 40 doesn' t fit, then you have the 9mm barrel, but don't know for sure which slide you have. If the 40 cartridge fits, then you know you have a 40 barrel, mis-stamped, and a 40 slide.

It shoots a 9 mm. I have ran a couple hundred rounds through it.

You have a S&W screw up. Someone got a 9mm barrel into the box of 40's and you ended up with the wrong barrel. But lucky you, as you can contact S&W and tell them of the problem. They will likely ask you to send the gun back. Explain this is your only carry gun and you don't want to be with out it. You can send them pictures of your slide and barrel and ask for the correct barrel be sent to you. Tell them it is not your fault someone at their assembly department screwed up.

If all works right, you might end up with what all us 40 owners want, two barrels (the stock 40 plus a 9mm). Then you have a gun with the best of both worlds, a 40 for high power SD, and a 9mm for less practice recoil and cheaper practice ammo. Don't forget you still have to practice some with the 40, so you know what to expect in recoil and time needed for target re-attainment.

Keep us posted on your outcome with S&W.

I like Bob's advice. If S&W will play ball (why not, they can't put your .40 slide on another gun) you end up with the best of both worlds. Remind them that it's much cheaper just to send you another barrel than it is to replace your slide and pay shipping both ways on your gun.
